Replacing Concrete Dividers with wood expansion joints. We wanted to keep the "wood" look. So, we decided to use pressure treated wood to replace our old rotted wood dividers. I feel it gives it a much nicer look to our backyard patio. We hope you find this useful! Also, please check out other content on my channel for more DIY's, Gardening, Home Projects, Decluttering, Cooking, Cleaning, and weekly vlogs of so much variety that takes place all the time lol. Thanks for watching!!!!

Omg... Denise, that looks fantastic! Jay did a wonderful job. Tripping is no fun, so I’m glad he made improvements for ya! Didn’t you say that was Jays childhood home at one time? It looks great! Kudos to home improvements today-. I’m having sprinklers installed! 😻

That's great you're getting sprinklers installed! I was out in our frontward this morning trimming around our sprinkler heads lol!! Had to make sure nothing was blocking them. Yes, Jay's been in this house as a kid. So, that's why it's been a HUGE declutter after so many years of finally getting rid of old stuff. We've been really busy with home improvements that started out with our new roof. It never ends as like everything else lol. But, slowly we're making progress!

Curious if redwood should get pretreated (epoxy/varnish) prior to inserting? Also if need to use pea gravel below planks? I'm Inserting Cypress in similar fashion for driveway and following all the rec's for unfinished cypress is to pre-treat with epoxy resin then varnish/stain. I'm planning on sweeping some polymeric sand down the sides after wood inserted then after clean-up, moistening the sand to help stabilize wood and protect it even more. Welcome any feedback

Question, so these different slabs were not connected by dowels/rebar? I'm doing a couple of different sections up against each other and just curious if I should try to connect them with rebar, by drilling my existing slab or doing some other kind of divider. I don't want want to shift against the other too much, but I suppose if it got bad I could always grind it later.
@DeeLovelyLife
@DeeLovelyLife 4 года назад
To my knowledge, there is no rebar installed. The slabs are free floating. The idea was if one of the slabs cracked we would only have to fix/replace the one area, and not have do the whole patio. Hope this helps.

@@DeeLovelyLife Yes it does, thank you, I'm about to do some patio work and I'll be doing it in sections, so I've been kind of obsessing over how to do it right. I'm in the valley in CA where it doesn't freeze much. I might also use that expansion joint material so I'm not really sure.
@mydulce26
@mydulce26 3 года назад
Im not in CA so I don’t know building codes but slabs should have dowels to attached any concrete addition and prevented from sinking. Wood was place an an expansion joint to prevent cracking or in case it cracks to remove that part of the concrete. While the expansion joint might have been placed in a decorative way, it serves a purpose and it’s not just any regular wood but a special one. It will edge and shrink a little on the top. When it rots its best to replace it with a sealant or a rod because you can’t place wood again the same way as the old one as it should have been in between the dowels. I hope this helps

what did you seal sides with so that water does not get under the concrete to prevent under slab erosion?
@oliveraguirreconcreterepai4826
Haha funny. I have also had customers asking me to replace their woods. Then I have to explain them that woods are there as part of the construction process but wood should not be used throughout the life of concrete. You need to use caulk or something that makes the joint water tight and flexible

@@oliveraguirreconcreterepai4826 100 % AGREE SHOULD NOT GO Back with wood but at this point it dont matter the concrete is already on its way braking there are hairlines cracks everywhere only going to get worst

I did a neighbors house and the neighbor down the road loved it so she also hired me. I went to look at it and it seems like her were bolted down? Is it normal?

Looks great for a little more protection u might want to stain the raw ends of the boards facing the yard hope your mother is getting better

I'm working on this project myself now. I'm dealing with old nails that went through the concrete did you run into this problem and if so any tips on extracting them so they don't bind up my new boards?
@DeeLovelyLife
@DeeLovelyLife 5 лет назад
Yes, same problem. Nails were rusted and easy to break off with pliers. You could use a mini metal cutting milwauki sawzall. Good luck!

@@DeeLovelyLife Ditto - i used reciprocating saw to saw nails off smooth so no intrusion on new lumber being replanted.

See this is great. Those are true expansion joints in my opinion. Mine has concrete joints which I find stupid.

What tools did he use to pull up the wood? I’ve used a pick axe, screw drivers, tried drilling in nails and using a hammer to pull them out. Some are so snug they don’t even break

He used a crow bar, with a hammer to get them out.

How do you seal it from water going between the sides and expanding when it freezes in the winter? Is there still risk of termites since the wood is touching the ground?
