A really common area for the Saab 99 and 900 to go are the driveshaft tunnels. These ones are really quite bad on my 5 door turbo! Please excuse the droning voice and quarantine hair, Rona isn't being kind. Do enjoy the welding and progress though!

My kingdom for a lift!!! I have much enjoyed your videos and lament that you are not able to post more regularly. A Canadian fellow named Aaron Cake has been working similarly on a Mazda Cosmo for, oh, the last decade or so. To temporize with your fans you might post a short talkie where you address the why's and wherefore's of this choice to restore. Rarity does not always confer value and all such as that.

What a project! More rust than bodyshell. Can't wait to see the finished job. My stepson bought a rolling shell from Florida - I thought he was mad, but comparing his shell with yours he certainly did the right thing. I had a 1980 99 5 door turbo 30 years ago. Lovely car & I wish I'd kept it. Acceleration was fantastic. Good luck

Thanks Peter! Yeah things rust really badly in the UK so a Florida shell is definitely the way to go. Nice to hear someone else has had one of these! I'm looking forward to driving this one.

Well done. The Saab is quite the project. Hats off for jumping into it. Don’t have such problems here in Southern California.

Thank you! And yeah I bet! I've experienced Mercedes SL's and MGB's imported from California, and apart from the sun ravaged interiors and faded paint they were in beautiful condition rust wise. I'd much rather be re-trimming an interior than welding metal in everywhere. Clean and quiet!

I am currently repairing the driveshaft tunnel on my own Saab 99T and based on your 'review' here I didn't buy the repair section and am instead attempting to make all the repair sections myself which is taking ages!. I have enjoyed your videos as motivation! I look forward to seeing the front finished!

Cheers Tom! Ive spoken to a few other Saab people and they've had the same experience with these repair panels. I'll most likely be making one for the other side like you are as it takes almost as long modifying the repair piece!

@@britishswedishresto9577 The bottom section is the trickiest one because of the shaping but all the vertical bits are not too bad! good luck :) are you on the uksaabs forum? I've been documenting my 3 door works on there.

@@tomarse42 Ah cool! I am on UK Saabs. Although I'm one of those annoying people who looks at everything and only posts once in a blue moon. I'll take a look at that, what's the post title?

@@britishswedishresto9577 Its "1978 99T 3dr - Rust Elimination & T16/Speeduino swap project" under "Your Cars". I'm a bit ahead of you but I have way less rust!

I wish I could do this someday... I've got 2 saab 9-5s but I dont think I have the will power and patience to do a project like this... Loving the vids and keep up the work!

Cheers! I've always been tempted by a 9-5 but for some reason have never gone for it. Life gets in the way usually! Hopefully picking up a 9000 Aero once lockdown has eased though.

Jeez, (and not in a US accent) I am bowled over with your commitment, confidence and determination to rennovate this and your audacity on the lift. Do you really not at least need to sash clamp before cutting?

Great project Can you still get the lower sub tunnel sections. I have personally done surgery on one of these ! Excuse the pun ! Brilliant insight in to classic car resurrection with an emphasis on welding.

I'm dreadful at replying! As far as I'm aware you can't. Those tunnel repair sections I got are the only bits you can get it seems. Thank you for your kind words!

looking good, i have to do that drive shaft tunnel on my 2 door turbo, i dont think mine is as bad as that, but no car lift for me :-(
@britishswedishresto9577
@britishswedishresto9577 4 года назад
The car lift is a luxury! The worst of it would be do-able on the ground, the only annoying piece would be the welding underneath, but I've done a lot worse jobs without a lift (clutches on Volvo's spring to mind). Good luck with yours!

Unbelieble rusted for a SAAB 99 .. but these years where bad in nearly all Automobile Production Industrie. If this 99 was not one of those British Market rareties you should have given up this ruin.. s u r e l y
