In todays video we will start going back together with the GMC's fuel system.
Instead of repairing and replacing two of everything for the original system I am retrofitting a 25 gallon 1986 GMC Suburban tank behind the rear axle.
Parts used:
Dorman RNB-576-320 fuel tank
Wix 33033 (3/8") fuel filter
60" each 3/8" & 1/4" steel lines and female flare connectors
Special guest appearance: Mr. Bean

I immediately thought of the 56 Chevy tail light with the filler hidden behind it when you mentioned your idea. Awesome idea! I love it!

That Dodge 5500 with the boom sure is handy! And yes, the filler behind the taillight, as with the 1950’s Cadillacs, would indeed be cool.

Hoarfrost day I see LOL Double flare the tubes or expect leaks later. Use as much steel line as possible even if just a foot or two. Rubber hoses should only be small lengths such as 6" or less. Like the idea of getting rid of the double saddle tanks. Putting the filler opening behind the taillight is a great idea!

Love it !! Going to have to come up with something similar on my wifes 73 K20 with dual saddle tanks. The only issue is we dont want to lose the capacity. The truck is fuel hungry .

I really like the idea of placing it behind the light. I have a 67 Chevelle and you know the layout on this model.

A great project! On the tank filler, the tail light is very retro and cool. I suppose just above the tail light there isn't enough room for the filler door. As usual, great skill and craftsmanship, Mr. Jayhawker!

Better to have the gas filler in the side of the truck to keep it from allowing water to get in, and the full use of the bed!

Good job on the mod & fabrications! I, too, am not much into modifications but I think you made a good decision regarding the gas tank. There is a you tube channel of "Fitzee's Fabrications" & he has a video where he moved the filler neck from one side of a truck bed to the other side. That might be worth your while to see that if you want to move the gas filler door. Of course, you most likely could do the Mr. Bean cut & paste move yourself but I thought I'd suggest it anyway. I know how good the feeling is when you start to grab stuff from the disassembled pile & put it back where it belongs. But, still, I wish I could just snap my fingers & have it all fall into place. It'll be awesome to see the engine, tranny & cab back together -- I'll be pullin for ya.

I would HIGHLY recommend putting the fuel vent tube and vapor canister back into play, because that will help in tank pressure regulating and putting the fuel vapors to work with intake delivery!
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker Год назад
Yes, I'm considering my options there. I may just mount it hidden under the cab where one of the fuel tanks used to be and plumb it from there.

I might add a blazer tank for a 3rd tank some day. For my application I really like the saddle tanks for low centered weight. And I do like having a spare tire at least for now.

Heck yeah to the filler idea from the 50's. I've often thought of doing Ol' suburban tank swap. Less maintenance and aggravation.

There's a company out there that manufactures a flush mount gas filler neck, it has no door and you can push in and turn and remove the gas tank cap they really are pretty nice I believe they come in a chrome color but you have the option to paint it the color of the body. Kind of cool and pretty simple to do. Just a thought, putting it exiting the tail light is quite a bit of work .

I’d leave the saddle tanks and still put the suburban tank in the back then make a transfer pump to fill the suburban tank on longer road trips

like a 57 chevy , i like the idea myself, there is also the option of a 90 threw the wheel hump into the bed, you will still have your pay load area , myself the only thing good about a ford is you can stack hay were a chevy it sure ruins a great stacking hahahh what ever you do take in consideration that back by the wheel there is always that dreaded chance of blowing a tire, so the neck is a concern , i found out the hard way that the little bar from skin to frame was there for a real reason, hahahah, i sure hope you dont regreat like i do of not having the spare carrier , every time i go to town i have to lock my spare in the cab of truck hahaha. hey bro just want to say that even though the season of the lord is on us and many claim it isnt his birthday , i declare it is and every other day is my celebration to him may you and your family have a wonderful christmas and may you have a safe and happy season
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker Год назад
Well, in rural Kansas it's more of a norm to see entire farm shops thrown onto flatbeds pickups than many other places lol. I never did have a tire carrier for this truck so it was always in the bed. Once done, I would like to get a tonneau cover for the truck so the tire can just hang out under there.

Only thing I seen I'd do differently is the double flare on the fuel lines..that flare tool is ok for soft copper but not for brake or fuel lines

Good afternoon in 1984 I purchased a brand new square body 6 cylinder 3 speed on the column and drove the truck for 20 years before it rusted out. I live in the south on the coast and it lasted a little longer than the Northern Truck. My question is if you happen to need to change your fuel tank after installing a Suburban style tank are you going to be able to do that? I do appreciate what you're doing because I really like the square body good luck with your project, Mike
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker Год назад
Yes, it will drop out like any other tank from the bottom. Depending on what happens with the exhaust, the tailpipes may have to be removed. Having said that, rust here in Kansas will eventually happen over the course of 20 or 30 years of daily use, but not right away and not on a truck like this that will be more of a fair weather driver anyway. If it hadn't of been for the plastic tank shields collecting dirt up against the tanks they would still be fine. I would love to own a square body model with a 292. Thanks for watching!

Hey . I watched the whole thing. Look very good. Have you thought of running the fuel filler neck thru the fender .? I'm planing of using that tank on my 54 Ol' Beater. What are the dimensions of a 87 Subarba tank? Just fwd-aft. Side to side. Thank you.JB

lol, well that is me... Everything you see me doing has been paid for by spending my time working on other peoples projects. If you watch videos in my '48 Chevy playlist you will see my personal home shop. That was a project I did for another guy and it provided the funds so that I could buy the parts for this '86 GMC. As for the shop my GMC is in, that's my father-in-laws (who I work for full time) warehouse/shop that he graciously allows me to use the corner of for my overflow projects. Incidentally, he built his own business up working hard, day by day, check to check which is why he can have a nice building like that. Thanks for watching, and I know what you meant when you left the comment and I agree. Sometimes impressions aren't what they seem.
