Hey man, thanks for this video. Getting ready to put one of these in my garage and it's good to be able to visualize everything before I start on it. Kudos on the empty garage, too. Half my project is going to be moving mountain bikes, outboard motors and countless fishing rods out of the way. Thanks, again!
@@TheHappyLife-h7b Got the thing assembled and mounted only to discover the power unit is bad, right out of the box. I checked it with my voltmeter and have a 120v going in, but zero output. I sent a message to Genie support and they sent a robo-response for me to wait 1-2 business days for an answer. I already know the answer, but I guess I'll have to jump through their hoops to get another power unit shipped. Nonetheless, your video was very helpful. Thanks again!
Hey thanks for the video I’m struggling with ensuring that the teeth side of the chain are on the rails (specifically on the opposite side of the tightener). Any tips?
Thank you for putting this video together. I just took down our old Genie from 2012 yesterday (hurt myself in the process when the rail fell as I'm sure I did it wrong to begin with). But, I'm installing the new model today, and this was so helpful to see upfront.
Thanks so much for filming and sharing this informative and professionally done video. My very old Genie opener has just happened to fail today and I may want to buy this model. This installation video is very helpful. Great Job! Thanks again !!
Great video, would be great to include the remote and program setting, which if I had read slower would have been easier 😂. But you really helped this guy out a lot
Great video. Mentally preparing me for changing my super old garage door motor with this same model. I am hoping that that tomorrow it will go smoothly. But this gives me hope, since I didn't hear a curse, or even you seemed composed. Thanks man!
Thank you for the video. Mine came with no assembly instructions but 16 pages of programming instructions. This wil deffinitely help me. Thank you again.
@@TheHappyLife-h7b I have A chain drive system. My motor works well. The thing is the old door was wood. This is a metel door.the motor is now not long enough. The adjustments are still not long enough to completely open all the way. Do rhey sell extentions for the beam? Ty
Great video. Trying to install a new Genie in my garage that is not automated and required to do it by hand. Got the 550 Model looks the same as 750 on the box in this video. Can't wait to install it. Well explained video. Home Depot claims its easy to install by DIY and I am a DIY person so can't wait to try it in my house. Thanks Subscribed :) and Notficiations ON.
Recommend learning how to unwind the springs. Then, w/the proper rods you can wind the springs the correct number of turns and then check out how balanced your door now is. further fine-tuning might give the perfect balance and allow your opener hardware to work as little as possible. Of course, one must be completely sober standing on a ladder, winding one's springs approx. 32 quarter-turns and then tightening the bolts to preserve the adjustments.
Great video. I couldn't figure out why the opener was working but the door didn't go up and down. Seems nowhere is it mentioned that the belt turnbuckle goes into the carriage assembly. I found that out after reading the trouble shooting section. I dont recall seeing you connect the two either. Still a very helpful video.
The garage door opener is not supposed to lift much weight. The springs are supposed to balance the door and if you don't get the door balanced you are going to be replacing that new garage door opener ticker than you think.
now your talking! the springs should be of the correct torque on the door when closed so that it takes a minimal "lift" effort to start the door moving up! If you added additional weight by installing door insulation, the springs should have maybe been changed out to handle the additional weight as to not burden the motor. Let the springs do the work, not the motor.
Well, this garage door comes with all the bell and whistles of a modern day device (wifi, app, Alexa, 3D installation app). It is as easy as it gets when it comes to installing a garage door opener if you're a handy man but I would hire a professional if you're not a handy man. The problem with this Genie is that the manual and even installation app lack the details and did not emphasis important points before installation. A nice big yellow bold note "BEFORE YOU INSTALL" Points would be nice. Here comes the con: 1. You must install EVERYTHING including the ground sensor for the opener to work or it WILL NOT work. I tried to test the unit before mounting on the ceiling and it would not work. 2. You MUST program the close and open distance before using the wall mount controller. After the programing, do a complete open and close run for the motor to test the tension of your garage door. 3. The Plastic UP/DOWN/PROGRAM button are horrible and cheap. My PROGRAM button would not click due to the a defect plastic button. I had to remove the shell where the real buttons are and program from there. It's easier to do it with the shell off. It took me and another person 2 days (6 hours day) to install this due to the lack of details in the manual and the lack of important emphasis points in the manual.
Praise you sir! I have been fighting with my genie for two days and your video did more for me then two days of reading the terrible directions it came with. You are the only video I found that actually showed me the wiring. If you were closer I would kiss you full on the mouth. Thank you!
Once you mounted the rail onto the head unit, how did you align the carriage with the turnbuckle? I am not able to move the belt anymore once the sprocket is attached to the head unit.
Batteries can be heavy. It is hard enough to mount the the unit to the supports without the extra weight. I would recommend attaching the battery pack after you have the unit securely mounted to the ceiling.
Couple tips for anyone reading, coming from a professional garage door / opener installer. First thing; don’t buy a genie, they’re really not worth it and I’d recommend purchasing a chamberlain, lift master, craftsmen. When installing the header bracket make sure to lift it a few inches over the springs roughly 3-4 inches, the rail should be higher next to the springs and sag downwards in the middle, rail should be 1-3 inches up from the top panel when the door is fully opened, when installing the arm that pulls the door, make sure it’s a slight slanted L.
Greetings, I cleaned sensors, bought two new different remotes, erased all memory... indoor button works fine all the time. Both new remotes must be pressed several times or it works on the first time and then not. Wires seem to be fine even when I wiggle them sensors do not flicker. How can I trouble shoot the geniue motor? Installed 2004. Thank you.
wish I saw this earlier, I don't have that much clearance from the ceiling to the rail line after putting up. It seems like I have to take down to install battery back up cover. Do I need the battery back up? I am comfortable in leaving it out.
Well there is some things that could be changed with this install whoever originally installed it in the first place mounted the garage door opener way too high up and has a garage door installer genie garage door opener‘s especially today’s especially on heavy garage doors the trolley mechanism all plastic one of my friends were saying oh Genie is the best product ever and I was like I bet you it’s going to break he texted me two weeks later saying you’re right the trolley broke so don’t waste your money on a product and don’t waste on a garage door opener that’s not broken because of the springs if you know what you’re doing with torsion springs then fix it if not you hire someone about the exact same cost as a garage door opener and as a future reference I recommend installing a chamberlain belt drive or a lift master belt drive those openers are very strong long lasting if you install it correctly put detailing your work and if the garage doors balance if the garage door is not balanced then you just put money into something that it’s just going to break again
It works great! No issues with the belt. I did have someone come out and work on the springs to make it a bit more balanced but it works well so far. Thanks for watching!
Hey I am attempting to install and the chain keeps rotating such that it’s not teeth side to the rails on the side opposite of the tightener. Do you have any tips?
If you installed a new garage door and now your garage door motor/opener is having hard time going up there is nothing wrong with your motor/opener probably your door hits the floor real hard when is going down when is not connected to the rail of the opener. You did not installed the door properly. 1/2 hp even 1/3 hp motor should open the garage door easily. Probably you need to wind up the torsion spring or springs if you installed two springs.(Constructive opinion Greetings)
You could have seen how many times those Springs was wind-up and see if the Springs needed to be adjusted a little to be more easier with the proper adjustment
Excillent video!Ihad Genie installed, asked For a3/4hp,he worhed Till late, nextmorming I Checked,no decalor the power of the lift. It looked small, unable to talk to genie.I am very worried as to power of my lift.Help. TERRY. Went to home Depot
Great video! We installed this very unit. When we power it on, the light is purple. The turnbuckle doesn't move far and doesn't allow us to set the limits. Do you have a solution?
Door should of been checked for balance after insulation. Adjust as needed a work it. No door should depend on the operator to lift. Door balance is key less wear and tear
Thanks for taking the time to share this video! Does anyone know what I should expect if I'm upgrading from an old Marantec (early 2000s I think) to a new Genie? Curious if it'll be comparable to swapping a Genie for a Genie as in this video.
The red and green lights are correct. One sends and the other is the receiver. Your down travel may be too long causing the door to hit the floor too hard and simulate a collision with an object. Or maybe some how your line of sight between the green and red becomes interrupted when the door closes.I hope that helps and thanks for watching.
For the backup battery, did you have to drill the back of the motor to screw in or was the motor pre-drilled from factory? Mine was not pre-drilled and want to see if you experienced the same issue?
@@chewbacca7856 I just installed mine this morning and there are no pre-drilled holes either for the battery backup. I'm thinking about leaving the screws off too. Have you had any issue? Don't want it to fall off or anything.
@@TheHappyLife-h7b just curious bc I just got the same one. It's 3/4 HP. That should be enough to lift an insulated door if your tension spring is properly operational
@@deportivopalermo did you buy used openers? Maybe someone already programmed them. I bought and installed two openers yesterday, and I’m here looking for videos on programming the remotes (clickers) and HomeLink in the cars. Nothing is pre-programmed on mine. The remotes seem to work, sometimes, and I’m only 3 feet away from the opener, inside the garage.
The springs should be lifting the garage door. If your garage door opener is " lifting " the door, do NOT REPLACE the garage door opener. The Springs have to be adjusted from a Garage Door company. DO NOT work on your garage door springs, hire someone. Nice video though.
I highly advise not to mess with that type of spring if you are not a professional. The above comment comes from someone who is a novice that usually gets their face wiped of with a wrench because they said “it’s cheaper’. Also the same guy that keeps doctors and garage door companies in business🤦🏻♂️🤣
@@Yosemite25 The tension in the spring has been set to counterbalance the garage door. If you add weight (via insulation panels), you need to add tension to the torsion spring. The extra horsepower opener will help, but the door should be able to be lifted with one finger (when disconnected). It takes minor competence and set of winding bars to re-tension, but your biggest thing to look out for is a ticket from captain safety AKA Yosemite25
I just installed two of the 7155 models yesterday. I’m here fighting the remote programming, but noticed your question. The kits come standard for a 7 foot (height) door, so I had to buy the 8 foot extension kit. It was about $40 at Home Depot. The kit included a longer section of rail where the idler puller is, a longer belt and a longer disconnect rope to release the door from the carrier. I had no idea I would need to buy the extension kit, so measure the height of your door before buying. They sell extension kits on Amazon, but I wanted to install this weekend. My local stores were out of stock, so I assume it’s not a common item for most stores. I had to drive about an hour away to a Home Depot to find mine. The openers are up and above my expectations, like way above, on how quiet they are. I had original to the house, AllStar brand 1/2 HP chain driven openers. They were really loud and sounded like the doors were falling apart when opening. I could release the door and manually open them, and they were quiet, smooth and easy to raise by hand. So my springs are setup properly, just 24 years on an opener is a lot of work. I did try lubing the chains, no help with noise. The 7155 is great, so far. The Aladdin app works perfect. Just wished I could figure out the HomeLink buttons in our cars and the 3 button remotes. I may have issue with using the Sylvania LEB bulbs I installed. I’m reading they cause RF interference with the signal. So, for $40, you can replace the belt. When I looked up the belts online at Genie, it’s $75 for a replacement belt. This may not be available for 7 foot doors.
@@donrcollins231 After reading the documents, the motor and belt are lifetime warranty. However, my concern is how long does it take to get a replacement belt? One day of not able to open the garage door is a long time. Yes, I have to agree the belt drive is extremely quiet. All I can hear is the noise from the rollers. About the HomeLink in your car... First, you need to clear the old program on HomeLink by press and hold the #1 and #3 buttons at the same time. When you see the green light blinking then you can let go the buttons. Next, the best thing is to take one of the remote in the car and drive away far enough so the remote can't open the door. There, press the button on HomeLink you want to program, you will see the light blinking. Then press the button on the remote and hold for 2 seconds then let go. Repeat a few times until the blinking light goes away. You are only half way done. Back to the garage, press and hold the program button on the opener until the light turns purple. Now press the button on HomeLink a few times. The purple light on the opener will turn green and you're ready to go.
STOP BUYING GENIE. I understand the price tag is nice and all but it’s like that for a reason. Cause it’s cheap in the manufacturing process as well. I work for a garage door company. When it comes to your motor. SPEND THE EXTRA DOLLARS. You want it to last. Look into chamberlain or lift masters. Some exact things just much better made
There chucked full of plastic bought by overhead door co about 15 yrs ago a Japanese conglomerate there logic boards overpriced help line is lioged up for 1hour or more openers are over priced there chain system is hodge podge chamberlain is twice the unit less $$ then genie ive 39 yrs repairing but no more! There emergency release carrige is cheap ass plastic very expensive to repair and easy to break there help no 800-35-genie
*WRONG!!* You should have a tech mess with the springs... You are gonna burn up that motor... Opener is MEANT to move the door back and forth... NOT Lift heavy loads.
