According to a report from an Australian news station, the NFL is in preliminary discussions to hold a game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2025, bringing the NFL to Australia for a regular season game for the first time. Which raises the question- how the heck would this even work?
During Saturday of week 17, the NFL will do a tripleheader on NFL Network, where three games will be shown in front of a national audience. The five games they can choose from for that? Broncos/Bengals, Rams/Cardinals, Patriots/Chargers, Commanders/Falcons, and Giants/Colts. How riveting, especially when compared to previous years with the tripleheader. I break down the mistake here

Neither have a large enough field to accommodate AFL. MCG (as an example) is an oval 166 meters long and 142 meters wide - way, way bigger than any stadium in North America.

And depending on how the AFC-NFC parings work out for 2025 I don't know if the West in both conferences play each other or if the remaining interconference game is AFC West-NFC West then you could have Rams - Chargers or Rams - Raiders
@jcurnutte2007
@jcurnutte2007 4 месяца назад
Because for it to work with the Rams it would have to be a year where the NFC has 9 home games or the Rams play the Chargers (technically 9 or 10 home games for both teams as both share SoFi)

I think the NFL would pay the AFL a ton of money to move their event out of the MCG to clear up the stadium for the NFL's use. They clearly don't care about the Corinthians soccer team banning green in their stadium, I'm sure they don't care about Australia's biggest sporting event of the year.
@warfradio4287
@warfradio4287 3 месяца назад
Yeah nah, not going to happen. AFL Grand Final day is pretty a 100,000 (sell out) crowd every time. It's the big cash cow, and the state government has like a 30 year contract to hold that game at the MCG. Plus not to mention the playoffs (finals) held at the ground in the weeks leading up. Best bet is the NFL having the ground in the first weekend of October.

As an Australian, and more than that, someone born and raised in Melbourne, I can tell you that the MCG would not be full at any time of day for an NFL game, never mind one in the morning. I would like to read your reasoning as to why you would think that 100,000 people would be at the MCG for an NFL game at 1AM. It's not happening.
@raytaylor6412
@raytaylor6412 4 месяца назад
The MCG is basically a circular stadium, meaning the 50-yard line seats would be much farther away than at an NFL stadium. How is that going to work?
@ecstasycalculus
@ecstasycalculus 4 месяца назад
Not only is it circular, it's about 50% bigger than an NFL field. Stadium Australia in Sydney, which primarily hosts rugby, is way more suitable for an NFL game.

One scenario thar could work... Have one of the two teams play a Thursday Night game while the other team is on their bye week. Then, play the Aussie game as a Thursday Night game the next week in the US/Friday morning in Australia. Then, the team that played the previous Thursday night is then on Bye week. The other team plays on Sunday or Monday night.

I think a game in Australia is inevitable. With the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 to take into account, though, the NFL has to be very careful. I think the NFL will find a way to pull this off.
@reidcraig3739

In regards to your comments about the Rams hosting despite only having eight home games next season. The NFL has already done this twice already since they’ve gone to the 17 game schedule. In 2021 Atlanta played a home game in London despite only playing 8 home games and in 2022, the Jaguars did the same thing. The Jaguars are also slated to do this again in 2024. I am aware, however, though that Jacksonville has been playing at least one game in London for the past 10 season.

If it's in October, it will be like California in April, weather-wise. The later, the warmer. Melbourne is the unofficial sports capital of the country. They actually have an American-style football league, which they call gridiron football. Melbourne is a city the size of Chicago.

Would be much easier to play the game at the 53000 capacity Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane than the MCG as in Queensland, they have a Public Holiday on the First Monday of October for the Monarch's Official Birthday and the NRL Grand Final is played in Sydney the day before meaning that the stadium would be available. Accor Stadium in Sydney with a 80000 capacity would work on December 26 as the day is a Public Holiday (unless there is an A-League game occuring there) as the Stadium would be available around that day.

Finally, someone with some common sense. Born and raised in Melbourne, started watching gridiron in 1985. Played the game, officiated the game, yet even *I* will tell you that an NFL game in Melbourne would be a moronic idea--even dumber if specifically held at the MCG. One factor that nobody is considering: the NFL has a union, the NFLPA. I guarantee you that these players will quickly tire of taking 17 hour plane flights across the world in between games. A trip across the ditch to the UK is one thing. Asking these players to travel from the USA to Oz is ludicrous. The preseason game worked because in preseason, you play maybe one quarter of football, plus the preseason games aren't well attended anyway. Not the same in the regular season.

Rugby, hardly recognised in Melbourne? Time to put down the crack pipe: any idea how many rugby teams and rugby fans are in Melbourne? Ever heard of the Melbourne Storm? Now compare that to the number of gridiron teams in Melbourne--hardly any. I know, I played in the local league. A lot of fans from NSW and Queensland travel for the game. It's an established tradition, and the fans have a lot of civic loyalty. You won't have the same number of people travelling from around Australia for the NFL. You would get a big crowd for one game, but certainly not 90,000. Then, after that one game, where do you go? In order for such a venture to be worth the NFL's trouble, it would need to be consistent. Wouldn't be worth just doing one game and disappearing. Would be too much hassle for a game every year. The NFL will be losing money that they could be making back home. Amazing how these comments sections are full of people who beg for an NFL game, yet won't support their local league--because if you _did_ support you local league, you'd realise how unpopular gridiron is in Australia.

@@marcus813 No, they don't. No benefit from playing in Australia. Little to no benefit playing in Spain. NFL Europe had a team in Barcelona, and the game of gridiron never took off in Spain. The NFL makes plenty of money in the US. The more overseas games held by the NFL, the more the league will piss off traditional American fans who are unable to watch their team in person overseas. There are fans who like to watch every home game. They can't do that when the teams start playing in London, Mexico City and Toronto, so forget about Australia and Spain. They're dumb ideas.
@marcus813

@@markv1274 With the exception of the Jaguars, every club will have at least 8 home games anyway, so it's not that serious, fam. Those "traditional" fans still have plenty of chances to see their team in person at said teams' home venues. All 32 clubs have to give a home game to the NFL International Series at least once every 8 seasons and games in Spain and Australia are inevitable, so get used to it. The NFL isn't gonna revert to running all games here in the US. The NFL has fans outside the US and need to go to them.
