In yet another example of the NFL screwing up its schedule for the 2024 season, Mike North, the man who helped design the schedule, did an AMA on Reddit to talk about the thought process behind everything, and he revealed something about what the league tries to do and avoid during week 18. So, what did they do with the 2024 schedule? The exact opposite

This Mike North guy needs to be fired because before this year I've never seen so many errors and obvious oversights in the schedule, not just for one team but for many teams. He is incompetent and so are the other people who work on the schedule. With technology being as advanced as ever it should be easier than ever to use algorithms or even AI to make the schedule, but somehow they still messed it up. The fact I even know Mike North's name at all, just from seeing so many people discussing the flaws in the schedule, is concerning.

The small size of the NFL’s divisions explains a lot of the problems created by divisional matchups. If there are only three choices to choose from, it’s going to be problematic…

Not really. You can avoid consecutive repeats for week 18 entirely with the method JG9 laid out. Create a rotating pattern that never lines up consecutive matchups. Using the NFC North as an example: 1. Bears @ Packers/Vikings @ Lions 2. Packers @ Lions/Bears @ Vikings 3. Vikings @ Packers/Lions @ Bears 4. Packers @ Bears/Lions @ Vikings 5. Lions @ Packers/Vikings @ Bears 6. Packers @ Vikings/ Bears @ Lions This ensures that in a 6 years stretch, not only do you never have the same week 18 match-up in consecutive years, but also ensure each team has 3 home and 3 away closers in that stretch. People are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do this and I did it for free in less than 10 minutes. I literally just started with the Packers and worked the other teams based on them and it still manages to be very fair.

Food for thought: the schedule of the CFP Semifinals: 2023/4: Rose, Sugar (UCLA*, New Orleans) 2024/5: Orange, Cotton 2025/6: Fiesta, Peach The placement of Sugar and Peach in Years 1 & 3 of the 3-year cycle allows for a swap between the Saints and Falcons in those years. As such, they will meet in Week 18 every 2nd year of the 3-year cycle, when the NFC South faces the NFC East. They will both also have to play on the road in Week 17 of those years, requiring the team not hosting Week 18 to host Week 16. The negative is that this could require their Division Mates, the Buccaneers and Panthers, to have 3-year streaks Home and Away to maintain the cycle. Alternately, the same matchups would happen in Years 3 & 4 and in years 6 & 1 of each 6-year cycle, with the venues alternating; this is the option that I would go with. The Rose Bowl is played in the eponymous stadium, so there's no need to worry about displacing the LA teams, at least for now. The Cowboys, Cardinals, and Dolphins would just have to agree to a home pattern of 2,2,1,1. For Dallas and Miami, it's AAHHAH, for Phoenix, it's HHAAHA. In both cases, the common matchups would be 1/4, 3/5, and 2/6. This would, however, impact the Giants & Jets, as Dallas and Miami would have _the same_ HA schedule, effectively requiring one and only one of those 2 NY teams to take the 3/5 with the other taking the 2/6, as the 2 teams would need to be on _opposite_ HA schedules. (Technically, the Rams & Chargers may be similarly impacted by Phoenix, though only the former play the Cardinals.) And all 3 teams would Play Week 17 on the road in Years 1 & 4 with Phoenix doing so in Years 2 & 5 as well, with the other 2 also needing to do so for Years 3 & 6. Which means that in Year 1 of the 6-year Cycle, the Cowboys & Dolphins would need to play Week 16 at Home, same with the Cardinals in Year 4 of the Cycle. Other Week 16/17 Required Home & Away games would be governed by the CFB Bowl Schedule. In summation: the Divisional patterns for Week 18, with a Prime indicating Home & Away are reversed: AFC South & AFC & NFC North: A,B,C,A',B',C' NFC South: A,B,C,C',B',A' NFC & AFC East & West: A,B,C,A',C',B' By way of example, and since there are only 2 solutions, being to swap the primes with the non-primes, the NFC South Cycle, with next occurrence to be scheduled: A 2029/30: Saints @ Buccaneers, Falcons @ Panthers B 2030/1: Buccaneers @ Panthers, Saints @ Falcons C 2025/6: Falcons @ Buccaneers, Panthers @ Saints C' 2026/7: Buccaneers @ Falcons, Saints @ Panthers B' 2027/8: Panthers @ Buccaneers, Falcons @ Saints A' 2028/9: Buccaneers @ Saints, Panthers @ Falcons For reference, 2024/5 is Saints @ Buccaneers, Panthers @ Falcons. And Buccaneers @ Panthers was 2023/4. As was Falcons @ Saints, but I'm trying to not have 3 consecutive years of Home/Road games for week 18. Besides, Divisional is Home-and-Home anyway. It's not like we're discarding the matchup altogether; just "swapping" it one time to create the canon.
@TecMatt
@TecMatt Месяц назад
I was initially against all divisional matchups but I've grown to love it. It's like you said it should be on a rotation basis. I know what they've done with the Seahawks before it's a home-and-home. 2017 (away) and 18 (home) were with Arizona, 2019 (home) and 2020 (away) were with San Francisco. So that's a possibility as well

In a thread up above, I actually created a format for the NFC North that could really be applied to any division. It ensures that in every six-year span, each team will close at home 3 times and away three times while also ensuring they never close with the same opponent in consecutive years. 1. Bears @ Packers/Vikings @ Lions 2. Packers @ Lions/Bears @ Vikings 3. Vikings @ Packers/Lions @ Bears 4. Packers @ Bears/Lions @ Vikings 5. Lions @ Packers/Vikings @ Bears 6. Packers @ Vikings/ Bears @ Lions Maybe I should apply for North's job.

I think the final two weeks should be all divisional games and they should be scheduled based on the standings of the previous season. Here's how I think it should work: Week 17: 1 seed @ 4 seed 3 seed @ 2 seed Week 18: 2 seed @ 1 seed 4 seed @ 3 seed
@LegendaryDorkKnight
@LegendaryDorkKnight Месяц назад
So take the divisional games out of the middle of the season entirely and put them at the end? That might hurt TV ratings...like A LOT. In the early season, a division game that might be a bust at the end of the season would draw bigger ratings in October or November than in December. For example, let's say the Cowboys have a poor record this year. They are 4-11 and out of the playoffs going into week 17 to play Philadelphia who is 14-1 and has the #1 seed locked. Nobody's watching that. No one cares. Now imagine that same game but in week 6. Philly is undefeated at 5-0 and the Cowboys are 3-2 and looking to try and keep up in the division. Much more exciting stakes. Divisional games are a ratings draw and since one of them is always at the end, you gotta put the other one in the middle somewhere.

What you failed to take into account is either fox or cbs depending on what conference you are in is guaranteed to have Atleast 1 of each divsional matchup, so you will never see Eagles/Cowboys week 18 now b/c that usually gets a PT game and then you wouldn’t be able to flex that in week 18…… Same why lions / packers won’t be week 18 either

Should be Green Bay - Detroit in Week 18. Most likely NFC North title matchup. Or if they want it to be an exciting darkhorse thing, then make it Chicago - Detroit. Or Chicago - Green Bay.

@JG9News i’ll be honest I haven’t been much of a fan of some of the schedules for the last couple of years ever since they changed up the rotation for the AFC West and NFC West as in which teams you have to travel to if you are an East coast team. They change this in 2010 because the patriots and Jets had to do four coast to coast trips to play the Seahawks, 49ers, Raiders, and Chargers. Miami and Buffalo would only have to travel to the Rams (when they were in St. Louis) Cardinals, Broncos, and Chiefs. They waited until 2009 to do this because Houston (the newest team at the time) had not played at every NFL stadium yet and in 2009 they had to play at the Rams and Cardinals for the first time. In 2010 they made it to where if a team traveled to the Broncos they would also travel to the Raiders. This also applied for chargers and Chiefs. In the NFC, teams that traveled to 49ers would also travel to Cardinals, whereas teams that travel to Seahawks would also travel Rams. The NFL said the goal was to do this to minimize the number of cross country trips. Today it now kinda sounds dumb due to the fact that the Rams relocated to Los Angeles.

The NFL used to do that prior to 2010, but they wanted to have more division and wild card implications set in a balanced way (in this case, division matchups). I wouldn’t mind if they did a mixed rotation again for the season finale, but keep the matchups intraconference only.

I like the rotation idea or maybe a positional round in Games 9 & 17... Game 9: 1@2, 3@4 Game 17: 2@1, 4@3 (Or just Game 17 being one of the above) Those should provide decent enough games at key points in the season. Granted, teams like last year's Houston... the 1-31 Browns, etc... but at least it's a spring off point.

It would be more exciting if the season finale went through a rotation of playing every division rival each year instead of playing the same matchup at the end of the season. I’m sure Bears fans hated playing the Vikings in the season finale every season from 2016-2019, and every year it was in Minnesota (that’s 4 straight seasons that the Bears had to go on the road to the same team in the final game of the season!) The Packers haven’t played the Vikings in the season finale since 2015, and that game decided the NFC North. Even if those two teams aren’t playing with any kind of playoff implication on the line, it would be nice to have that yearly rotation of season finale matchups in the division.

I don't mind Week 18 being a match-up between a team and its most hated rival, i.e., Bears v. Packers or Malice v. Washington. If that were the scenario every single year, I'd be OK with that. Where I'd have a problem is having that match-up always taking place in the same venue year after year. Last year, Malice at Washington? Go to JerryWorld this year. Last year at Lambeau? Hike it to Soldier Field this year.
