vlog # 23 - repotting this giant monstera!
The monstera aerial roots were getting out of hand so I decided to see what's going on inside the ceramic planter and discovered like 4 feet of roots that grew outside of the plastic pot! It was wild! With some help, I was able to repot this giant monstera. It's not a job for one, that's for sure. Wishing you happy, thriving plants!
I've had this plant since June of 2020 and this is the second time we repotted it!

Hey so here's the interesting thing about monstera They have a front and back of the vine. I can see that when yours was grown by the nursery without that in mind. If you reset them it'll take a temporary hit, but it'll bounce back and look way more beautiful and structurally coherent. Cut the vines at the base, allow them to callous over, and then replant them in a new pot. Point the aerial roots in the same direction. This will be the back of the plant, and your leaves will come out more uniform. You can then place a ladder style trellis in there and tie the vines to it. I have one I just did this to. I got her for $7 when she was in a 4" pot and now she's about your monstera's size. It had 5 vines but I only kept three top cuts in a pot, roots all pointing in the same direction. The rest of the node cuttings and propagations went into the garden or were given away as gifts to family as this was a plant to celebrate my pregnancy with my first son. My other monstera is 40+ years old. Her leaves are multiple feet long, and I am about to reset her because when I got her my main concern was treating shock from being ripped from the ground and traveling in a hot car for hours. She's since recovered (took a full year) and flowered in my care inside. Now that the shock is over I'm going to chop her in half and place her so her top vine is standing upright.

This is so helpful! Is there a video that describes the process you are sharing? I’d like to do this but I’m not sure what’s a vine versus an aerial root. Are they the same?

@@BiancaBonus honestly I think the RU-vidr "kill this plant" has a video on it. Search his name along with "monstera" maybe?

Damn girl, you got your monstera to flower indoors? Round of applause. I heard monsteras are one of the hardest plants to make flower indoors.

My monstera is smaller but has larger leaves with a lot more innervenistrations. Is this a super size small form?
@Krolted

i dont believe the synonyms and classificiations describing ONE plant based on their growths/size stages. Thesres only one monstera deliciosa and one is younger (or perhaps more neglected which stunned their growth) and the other is older (or just better cared for). Your normal monstera you bought at ikea can get just as huge and holey under optimal conditions as like every other one. If she planted her monstera into outdoor soil in florida this plant would slowly take over her whole garden and climb up trees and sprout fruits if healthy and strong. Not a "super size small form" anymore but a "super duper giant ultimate big size form"

@Krolted when you buy a monstera at most big box stores or nurseries you are getting a borginsana, aka small form. These aren't actually deliciosa, they are another plant. I have about 8 small form and one large, and the large is a different animal with much more fenistrations.

Wat if we chop off the extra roots? Is it harmful?
@BiancaBonus
@BiancaBonus Год назад
I'm not sure what would happen! I kept the roots though because the plant is becoming more mature, so I didn't want to prevent it from growing.

If you sterilized your choppers & you're as cafeful as you can be your plant should be good. These roots are strong they'll take some good abuse\ hope to see more interesting content❤💯👍

@briatrixkiddo8338 Год назад
You can totally do that and it’s better for the plant as it helps with evenly dispersing nutrients and allowing the roots to adjust to the new pot. Also pruning and replacing moss poles suitable for grow height will help her with growth orientation.
