Repotting a Houseplant | Pothos and Croton - Rootbound with a Mass of Roots

I'm repotting a houseplant today, well 2 of them, my golden pothos and croton. They are beginning to get rootbound and have a mass of roots encircling the pot. I could keep them in the pots longer but they are requiring daily watering and I want to see them really flush out with new growth.
So far these houseplants have been a lot of fun to grow and I intend on increasing my stock in houseplants as we go. If you want to learn how to repot pothos and croton in soil then this video will show you how.

Your Petunias make me smile!! They are my favorite flower and it makes my day to see them mid-winter. I have a Croton that is 30+ years old. It sits in my living room in a pot so big that I have it on one of those wheeled platforms so I can move it when I need to.

Hey Buddy, I was always told to break up the roots and even cut the roots that were clumped together. I watch all your videos and love them, I have learned so much.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 года назад
You can do that if they are really badly root bound or if you're planting in the ground. In fact, I just potted up 13 plants the other day and did exactly what you mentioned. They were pretty root bound so I used a tree saw and sawed the bottom 2 inches off of the root ball before planting. In the case of these little houseplants, they weren't that bad and I didn't need to go to all the trouble.

Floridian here. I've seen one planted next to a house, over 5 feet, possibly 6 footer. It's getting close to the homeowners eaves. I have 2 of the spiral crotons. Cant wait until they get taller. I trained some pothos cuttings I cut from nearby woods, to grow up my oak tree, the leaves get huge the higher they climb. They are Georgous. The cold killed back both my crotons and pothos a year ago but they came back.

Dont be jealous. I'm struggling with a few house plants, well plants that want to be outside, I bought to be inside but they just dont like it. I have small peace lily and small varigated dracena in my office at work, the tips keep turning brown, same with the mass cane dracena at home. The peace lily's and other dracena planted in the yard does phenomenally. I really, really, really, wanted houseplants but I may have to put them out of their misery and take them outside.

Reminder. Crotons are poisonous to pets. I never water from the tap because of the chlorine in the water. If you let it sit in a watering can for a day , the chlorine disperses into the air. Then I put it in a smaller 2 liter container and add my plant food. Shake and share with plants. When I use the watering can I tend to overwater. So just added my 2 cents from my green thumb. I’m 71 and have over 30 plants in my apartment! Love my crotons. Do watch for spider mites on the croton. Thanks. Nice show you have!

I was given golden pathos at Christmas in a pretty vase, and recently discovered that the plant was still in the original plastic cup with no soil in it! I found out the plant was started in just water to develop the root system, and was never placed into soil. Is it going to go into shock if I plant it now in soil. I am amazed at how dense the root system is and think it should be placed into a larger container now with soil. Thanks for the house plant video.

Pothos are a vine so the only way to keep it bushy is to keep pruning any trailing branches that want to vine off and force the plant to keep branching near the base.

Well, it was potting soil, but it has plenty of drainage on its own. I don't believe that putting rocks in the bottom of pots does any good and only takes up space where roots could be growing, but that's just my opinion.

@@MikeKincaid79 learned something new. I'm not very experienced with plants so i thought that if it was one that needed really good drainage rocks were a must have. What do you mean by "it was potting soil" does the soil you use make a big difference? Like for succulents and such? Or can all indoor plants be in potting soil?

Hey Mike I am from North India. I am trying to grow Moringa plant from seeds. It's winter here ( between 7 to 18 degree C) Sown seeds since ten days. Keeping them moist and in the sun. But there is no germination so far. Any reason?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 года назад
Did you soak them in water for 24 hours first? Also, they can take a couple weeks to germinate. They should be kept in a warm dark place during this time.

I have a pothos. My great grandmother gave a little piece of hers to me and I put it in some dirt and now it's almost as big as hers! But she takes bits off of her pothos alot and has a ton of them. I was just starting to type asking what you fertilized them with then you said you were going to do a video on it so I'll wait 😂
