In this episode, I commence the reproduction of the Iron Stand from Sutton Hoo. Here, I create the shaft for the stand, which tapers from 20 X 16 down to 10mm square at the top - the longest continuous taper I have ever forged. I then create two twists on the top section and forge-weld a pair of scrolls above the base.

Loved the shots of the spacing the scrolls. It really was a joy to watch the hot metal move like butter.

Always a pleasure to watch. Your format isn't all excitement and power shows, just skill shown simply to great effect.

Re the fluxing mild steel .. "Don't fart about with all that rubbish!" I love it! If only more smithing tutorials took a leaf out of your book.

Beautiful work as usual, Rowan! Can you remind me of the name & author of the Sutton Hoo book you're working from, please?

Excellent video! So, what would this stand be used for? I could see it potentially used as some type of raised light, with an oil or pitch lamp of some sort sitting at the top. But what would the basket be used for? And did you mention the overall length? I think these reproductions are a fascinating look into history.

Not literally just that? An iron stand, for standing irons. Rather than stock on a rack, you stand your iron up in there.

Did you have to learn trigonometry in blacksmithing school?
