More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

All good comedy is rooted in truth. Anyone who doesn't want to be made fun of, just needs to accept the truth... if they can find it, which I suspect is the hard part right there, along with identifying it and picking out all the little bits of fallacy that got mixed in as they were digging it out of this murky mud hole we call life. Still, you can get good mileage out of caring about other people, trying to understand them, and just doing your best. Also, I love how you tossed their malicious perversion of the word "snowflake" right back in their faces. XD

NON PROFIT LMFAO that’s the real joke
@jaspermooren5883
@jaspermooren5883 6 месяцев назад
It is though. Non-profit is just a legal category that most countries have. It has nothing to do with how just the cause is. All it means is that they don't have profits to share amongst their shareholders (whether those are public or private), therefore they are a non-profit. There are lots of shady non-profits (practically all lobbying groups are non-profits). Legally they are just an association, so they have members with membership fees to recuperate the costs. They don't make profits. Literally every organisation that is not a company, aka an organisation that sells something (whether that's a product or a service) with the specific intent to make money doing so, is a non-profit. Alternative für Deutschland (political party in Germany that wants to kick out all the foreigners, basically neo-nazis) is a non-profit for example, that doesn't mean it is moral or just in any way.
@TheKastellan
@TheKastellan 6 месяцев назад
@@jaspermooren5883 Although to add there are quite a few ways where you can make the non-profit have an "expectation" to meet profit, let say to some other company that they owe. No clue if that is the case here though (not an american nor do I particularly care).
@Hexcede
@Hexcede 6 месяцев назад
@@jaspermooren5883 I don't think this holds any relevance because I don't think literally anyone cares whether or not it legally classifies as a non-profit, I think people are significantly more focused on his choice of words, rather than trying to dispute whether or not the NRA is a non-profit.
@Jedi_Vigilante
@Jedi_Vigilante 6 месяцев назад
@@jaspermooren5883 One slight modification, most nonprofits do, in fact, make profits. However, they are obligated by their organizational structure (and different tax code policies that apply to nonprofits) to utilize that profit to expand the business, offer better services, increase employee wages/salaries, etc. So while they can generate profits (and often generate LOTS of profit), the *intent* of their business is not necessarily to do so, let alone to pass that profit onto shareholders. For example, most water agencies in the U.S. are actually public nonprofits, technically owned and operated by the local populace rather than shareholders. Some of the larger ones will generate millions of dollars in profit every quarter. The Board of Directors (usually a low-pay, elected position rather than appointed one) will then work with engineers, technicians, and managers within the agency to choose how to spend those profits. Perhaps on renovating aging pipework, or adding another pump station, or sending the money to a neighboring agency to help fund their new water treatment plant. Most people when they hear nonprofit, they either think of something like that or a charity organization. While lobbyists may *technically* qualify as nonprofits, the vast majority of Americans consider lobbying groups to be very undeserving of that status, let alone the "positive" outlook most people have towards nonprofits in general. That is part of the reason why many people would be upset by his first characterization of his job for the NRA. When you tell people you work for a nonprofit, they picture somebody who works for the Red Cross bringing relief to disaster areas, or a public service worker providing necessary services despite the low wages. NRA reps usually make very good money for the sole purpose of brib... lobbying government reps to do what the NRA want, regardless of what the general populace wants.

If you're a lobbyist trying to schmooze a legislator, and you're both on the right side of the aisle, what are the chances your choice is "hey let's go see this prog comedian!". This dig doesn't make sense in this context. The dig against people for "doing their own research" isn't a general dig, as in saying it's never appropriate to do so. It's a specific dig against people who opt to eschew the knowledge and recommendations of experts in favor of their own opinions, like a person ignoring a doctor's advice on a health issue. But in general we DO want people to do research for themselves and find out information about things, it's called being informed.

@@Archangel-cw7mqYeah. That's why they put it in quotes. It's a reference to conservatives doing their own research and believing that Joe Biden is a clone or Agent Q preps Orange Messiahs or a ovine/equine dewormer treats human respiratory diseases from viral infections. Their comment discourages no one from conducting real research or literature reviews - it's a specific dig, as you mentioned, which is why it DOES make sense in this context. The same people who believe the Christian Bible is for children based on their "research" but not humanizing books with diverse gender and ethnic representation - based on their stellar "research" of course - are the same people who conducted the same quality of research to appear together, as a firearm lobbyist and state representative, at a filmed comedy show that stands precisely for what these conservatives find disgustingly free. Not complaining. Just don't think you sufficiently understood the context before commenting.

I’m American, Texan in fact, and I had completely forgotten that the NRA is technically a nonprofit until reminded. There’s 2 organizations: the NRA and the NRA Foundation. The NRA advocates for gun rights in government and the NRA Foundation supposedly promotes gun safety. The NRA Foundation is a charity and donations to it are tax deductible. The Foundation does conduct gun safety classes and training, but these aren’t available everywhere and they really pale in comparison to the work the NRA does lobbying against gun regulation and reform.

Well no, the NRA isn't directly owned/operated by any arms dealers. And there's actually 2 NRA's that share leadership. NRA Organization (referred to as NRAO) and the NRA itself. NRA: teaches firearm safety, advocates "constitutional carry" laws, educates on firearm history, and legal history surrounding them. Is a non-profit, doesn't directly interact with government unless approached. NRAO: This is the one you know funded for-profit by gun owners, firearm manufacturers, Republicans, etc. They're goal is to actively influence the federal and state governments through lobbying, PACs, SUPERPACs, etc. All of which ought to be illegal, but currently isn't. Arguably not using these methods would be a death knell for any at-risk political movement, such as the 2A/Gun Rights movement

The NRA have actually endorsed gun legislation on 2 different times. Once, during the surge of kkk activities in the 1920's, a lot of black people wanted to arm themselves, and the NRA worked to introduce legislation to make it harder for them. The other time was in the 1960's when the Black Panthers had armed themselves and were attending police activity, because California police were suspiciously beating and killing a large number of blacks. The NRA generously authored legislation that Reagan signed to try and restrict their access to firearms. Interesting, don't you think?

It drove me crazy. I’d ask people I knew and met “how is this possible?” Every time I had to manually connect the dots for them. “Anyone trying to rob someone or shoot up a place knows that the staff and the customers could all be armed. If you do, are you also aware that the government already has a monopoly on violence, that government sanctioned violence is the only legal violence? Prohibition only works on people who would have never desired the product in the first place anyway. It's human nature to desire a means of power, breaking prohibition for power is the fabled original sin, by design.
