This week has VANISHED! What happened?! Maybe its the change in weather… but really, one minute it was Tuesday then it was Sunday! Managed to get a couple of days in at the allotment - and the important job of reroofing the chickens house has been achieved so it wasn’t a total waste. Also got some more broadbeans in.

Rather than the hassle of replacing the tarpaulin over your chickens, you could paint on some Acrylic Roof Seal which can be painted on in wet conditions and seals immediately. Flexacryl is the brand I used to sell up here in the West Midlands.

I can’t help but laugh at your reaction to the cold. Here in central New York State we don’t even think of it as cold until we’re below 25F. It has been an exceptionally warm winter here, and now in March we have spring an entire month early.

So lovely seeing the allotment flowers. We need a bit of colour still this time of year! We still have lobelias, marigolds and nasturtiums still going. I guess the oranges reds and browns of the latter two are more fitting colours for this time of year. You should knit the chickens some little chicken tank top vests for the winter! You could also knit them matching hats so they look like Compo! I am sure they will appreciate the new tarp and wood chips. I didn't realise it was an open alley way between your plot and the school. It's probably where the foxes and other animals are getting in the plot. Made me laugh when Lillie went rushing through the gate, when there was a hole in the fence! lol Our neighbours garden is higher than ours so we often have the animals that are attracted by the smell of their outdoor small pets, jump into ours, which is a lot lower and panic, when we hear them and try to scuttle out through the door hole at the back of the garden, over a mini shed and out. Finally managed to pull out the beetroot, radishes and turnips and reset the bed for the garlic. As you guessed it i have far too much garlic left! lol The rest are back in the fridge until i can think of what to do with them. I did give some cloves and a chilli to out friend who took our kid to Brooklands museum on Sunday, whilst we worked in the garden. Apparently it was really empty but they got to go in a F1 car and did the concorde tour as well as other vehicles. Yes i have been out for the past month or so with the rona. It's going rife around the schools atm according to the school office. I had to go on antibiotics so i haven't been much fun lately so it was nice of my friend to do that and get them out of the house. So disappointed with my late potatoes! I have 3 large fabric pots, each with 2 chitted potatoes and only one plant survived from the rainy horrible weather! So not quite the festive season haul i was hoping for but should have some for christmas day and maybe leftovers for boxing day if they are still ok! We also harvested some sprouts that have come early, so i roasted those with the turnips, beets, a potato, carrot, rosemary and garlic all from the garden. I also boiled up some beetroot leaves and baby turnip leaves/ stalks. Tesco had an offer on salmon tails, so we had that with some more garlic and carrot leaves as a garnish. I find the leaves taste like celery/parsley. I pickled the rest of the beets and white radishes with some shop bought onion and left over veg for Christmas. I am hoping to bring in the herb window box into our utility area that connects the house to the garden so i can transplant some parsley, dill, coriander etc. It gets quite a bit of sun there. It's really nice to see some of my old local haunts. Not sure if it's still there but on the Twickenham high st junction is/was a snooker place called Colours and i met Jimmy White and John Virgo in there back in the day abt 20 yrs ago i think. Pubs on the Thames either in Richmond or Kingston are really nice if you can get a seat. White hart lane was never the best. The Star and Garter in Putney never really had proper outside seats other than the park benches! lol I do miss that area though as there aren't that many pubs and stuff open here but i don't miss hubbys basement flat and patio garden! I was born and bred there and lived in several places in the area but i think that was the worst one. Edwardian houses look nice from the front but they have so many problems with damp and draughts. I saw your update on the house reno and the bathroom is getting there. You live with your mum right? Did you say it had red paint underneath? You probably already know to wear a mask when sanding it as it probably has lead in the paint. We fully renovated our house and it was a nightmare with several layers of wallpaper and even wallpaper on the ceiling! I also think who ever invented artex should have a word. Do you not get weirded out walking through the graveyard at night/ in the dark? I remember always being scared of walking back to my friends house who lived at the back of the big Asda and having to take the shortcut through the cemetery! Always creeped me out. You know they built a lot of that Asda on some of the old cemetery?! They also shot a lot of "The Bill" around there. The TV series not the actual bill! lol Anyway, hope you are feeling better soon and staying warm!

P.s. I would have asked for more off those seeds tbh. There might have been more of them at the bottom of the basket. I am surprised they didn't tape the packet back up. I always grow more in case some don't germinate and i would rather spares to give away than not enough.

Hahahhaha, good luck getting a wooly hat on Ruby!! And yes, because we are the last allotment and with the boundary path, we are in the line of all the wildlife! And ditto! My christmas potatoes aren't going to be a feast either! very envious of your sprouts :) I think 'Colours' became Riley's, if its the place i'm thinking of. How exciting to have met Jimmy and John! I met Ronnie quite by chance a few years ago in a pub at the end of lower marsh in waterloo! I don't tend to go through the cemetery at night. Used to as a teenager but i had a creepy experiance that somewhat put me off hahahah! Hope you're staying warm too. xx

Could you use the clear plastic like on your polly tunnel over your chicken coop? We do the same thing to areas of our chicken run and I use clear contractor plastic. Not sure if you all have something like that over in the UK. Then, because it doesn't have reinforced holes like a tarp, I use tape over the edge of the plastic and poke a hole in that so it doesn't rip or staple it down to the wood. That way my gals get the benefit of the sun while having protection from the uglier elements. Oh the joy our sweet chickadees bring us.

Jess, The game changer for early Chile production is over wintering! I tried it last year. We were getting Cubanelles, salad peppers and jalapeños in May! This year I tried tobasco and habanadas. I finally got some to set on in September. They were not going to ripen before a hard freeze. We repotted them and pulled them inside. They are finally turning color! The practice of over wintering will help with the grow light seedling overcrowding in Spring! I am looking forward to next year already.
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 9 месяцев назад
Wow, well done overwintering them. I tried and failed at that twice. How did you do it? as dormant plants or kept them warm?
@dlsdyer9071
@dlsdyer9071 9 месяцев назад
@@JessieatPlot37 right now the tobasco peppers are inside of our French doors in 5 gallon pots right now because we had 28F weather. They are doing well. Last year I thought that we could do them under grow lights for continuous production but the aphids were bad. We used gallon pots for these. We had them on a hydroponic timer so that the roots got soaked daily. After they went dormant I cut them back and watered them once or twice a month. They stayed in our garage. Once the outdoor temps were good during the day I planted them in large pots with water reservoirs and put plant rollers underneath. Id roll them out on our driveway, pulling them in at night. I am thinking that your home solarium would work for those late production ones to overwinter. They would also be easy to water there. Note: the smaller the plant, the more you can put in a large pot, just make sure to label them. Enviro mesh them with something to hold water (freezing water gives off heat) for earlier planting in your poly tunnel. You are able to get your lemon drop chilies to grow. I have had a dickens of a time trying to get those seeds to germinate. Next year I will be doing some Brazillian “Little Beak” peppers as well. I learned that one Datil and one Sugar Rush Peach are plenty for fermented sauce for us. We may be getting chickens, if that is the case will grow more to feed to them as a dewormer.

@JessieatPlot37 9 месяцев назад
We still go up every day. But our set up does allow for leaving them for 2 possibly 3 days if something drastic happened and they would be okay. I say 'we'... Mum goes up every day! She goes to Pilates just next to the allotments so she combines the two.

How far is the walk from your car to your plot Jessie? I kind of feel thankful that we are able to drive in to our allotment and park about 2 metres away from the plot. Although our plot is about an 8th the size of yours so you win on that one.
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 9 месяцев назад
Its about a 4min walk from either side. We have two gates, one side you can park quite close (the cemetery side) but then our plot is at the opposite end or the main gate which is on our side but its a steep hill up a log narrow path.... choices, choices! Hhahaha Oh the dream of being able to drive up close!

For future reference I can recommend bhgs based in evesham. They largely supply the growers in the Vale of evesham but do mail order. They don't have loads of varieties but are really great value for beans, peas, onions, garlic and flower bulbs. At the end of last year I paid 5.79 for 1kg of aquadulce. seeds 4.50 for a 1kg of pea seeds. They are relatively local to me so I take a special trip each season. The ones I bought last year have all germinated well again this autumn.

Wow, that is cheap Lorraine! But who needs a whole kilo of Aquadulce?!?! I could supply the whole allotment site! :D

@@JessieatPlot37 yes you could. They do seem to last a couple of years too. My other half would be happy if I only grew broad beans as they are his favourite veg so I do plant loads

Hi Jessie. Great video as always. I googled nipper leeks as I like how you described them in previous episodes but Google gave me all different kinds of leeks - Porbella, Atal, Bulgaarze Reuzen. Is nipper leeks just a general term for small leeks? Would any of those mentioned do? Thanks in advance.
@JessieatPlot37

Hi! No Nipper is an actual variety. let me see if i can find a link...

We thinking of getting chickens in our back garden. How many eggs do you get from 4 weekly?
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 9 месяцев назад
it varies a lot Mandy. ours are pekin bantam and different breeds lay at different average rates. and it also changes throughout the year. right now we get nothing from them at all. in the spring it can be as much as them all laying every day. but it totally depends, and they have peek laying age that then tails off and they live a lot longer than they lay for.

@@JessieatPlot37 oh ok yes I have heard most of that but whether we get eggs or not would love them outside round by the back door aswell. We have a wrought iron 8 ft fence around the garden well at the bottom and then our own fence so we know foxes won’t get in. We not sure if we want to have rescue birds or the pretty fancy ones gotta get the henhouse first but I have wanted them for years. Now I am free to look after them. Thanks for replying Jess👍🙋🏻‍♀️

unfortunately american planting zones don't really apply over here. We are classed as H3. Probably the closest would be maybe US9, but not really.

traditionally broadbeans are sown in the autumn, over wintered and then yeah, crop in early april.
