The Little Hen Rescue Centre, managed by Jo Eglen, has saved thousands of battery hens from a miserable fate, many of whom have lost their feathers through heat and stress.
Local people have come up with a way of keeping them warm, by knitting them little jackets......

Everybody should treat chickens with respect. They have the right to live a good life as well. Thanks for the inspiring video.

I wish more people care about the welfare of chickens like the people here. England is HUGE for rescuing Ex-battery hens. I wish there was a place here that did that.

To care is to no longer eat eggs or chicken whatsoever, not rescue after years of abuse.

I really enjoyed that video! Its great cause the poor babies got rescued, then there they are, wearing little fashionable sweaters! It was so adorable to watch. They seemed to not mind wearing the sweaters at all.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE ANIMAL WELLFAIR ACT TO FIGHT AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE & CRUELTY. JUST BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT THE HENS SHOULD NOT EXCUSE THEM FROM THE UNIMAGINABLE STRESS TRAPPED SICK IN THOSE HARD WIRE CAGES!! THEY DESERVE MUCH THAN THAT AFTER EVERYTHING THEY HAVE GIVEN ,AND SACRIFICED! GREEDY EVIL MAD MEN THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE!!!? USDA DOSE NOTHING OR DO THEIR JOBS, 9 PEOPLE WORKING FOR THE WHOLE USA. THATS ANOTHER ISSUE TOO. THERE IS NO SYSTEM BOTTOM LINE!

Awesome! Maybe there's a way to knit hemp & recycled fibers too, so our dear sheep pals don't have to be further relied upon either (many of them are discarded/abused as well out there.) Info for some who asked: there are places in the u.s. to adopt rescued (& otherwise neglected, abused or discarded) hens. Farm Sanctuary, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, & others need more adopters but you'll have to let them do a site visit to make sure you have a good set up. Learn about veganism too!

I would think the sweaters are made from acrylic, rather than wool. Acrylic is lighter in weight, and is easily washed and dried - and no shrinking or felting issues, like wool in hot water. And it's cheaper yarn as well, easily available in many thrift stores, in odd colors and quantities.

What is the process of getting the hens from the battery cage, away from their original owner, to the heat lamp and safety in your barn? How do you rescue a battery hen?
@7iluvanimals

Nitted jumpers? Don't heat lamps work? Course if we did this in texas they wouldn't need help keeping warm. Cool yes. But not warm!

The sheep aren't kept in battery cages, they're taken on a long journey through rangeland and get a haircut once a year. Pretty nice, actually.

You are delusional if you think that is how it is. Here is a video that summarizes the abuse that happens for wool. Its a nightmare. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-siTvjWE2aVw.html

I can't watch this cruelty by some ignorant idiot who knows nothing about chickens, and shouldn't be allowed the privilege of caring for them. As she is just abusing them, they have been through enough without this torture. Any good chicken owner knows that Chickens need jumpers like fish need bicycles The question of whether chickens need to wear jumpers comes up very frequently and we always advise against them. People see almost featherless ex-batts coming from the farms and their natural instinct is to do everything they can to protect them and keep them warm, including knitting cute sweaters for them. Not only are jumpers unnecessary, they are detrimental to feather growth and can be downright dangerous too! 1. Chickens are very good at regulating their own body temperature. Wearing a piece of wool or acrylic will interfere with this natural regulation of temperature and when they get wet, will make them cold and uncomfortable. Imagine how you'd feel walking round all day in a wet sweater against your bare skin. 2. Chickens are naturally inquisitive and as you probably know, can get everywhere. Jumpers can get caught on bushes etc. and cause injury to your hen as she tries to escape. Hens are constantly preening and scratching - it is very easy for beaks and claws to become entangled in jumpers and the hen may find it impossible to disentangle herself. Jumpers inhibit dust bathing, which hens do on a regular basis to control parasites. 3. Chickens frequently moult in the winter months as the cold air stimulates feather growth - adding this unnatural layer will interrupt the natural process. 4. Newly emerging feathers have a blood supply, which diminishes as the feathers grow. At the new growth stage, the pin feathers also have nerve supply and are extremely sensitive - a jumper pushing against these newly emerging feathers will be very sore, cause damage to the new pin feathers, and make your chicken quite miserable. What you CAN do: a) Provide lots of bedding in the coop and keep that fresh and dry b) Ensure there is a wind proofed area of your run by putting tarpaulin or corrugated sheets, bamboo screen or even a beach wind break around the run. c) Add shelter in the form of a roof over one area of the run, helping your hens to keep dry. Jumpers are often provided with the best intentions but can have the worst outcomes. If you want truly happy hens avoid this type of nonsense.

Christine Sylvester I thought they were rather cute, but your right. Some of your points like getting wet, caught or dirty and being unable to dust bathe, I agree absolutely. So if not sweaters, how about heat lamps in the coop, like you use to raise baby chicks. Would that help?
@pamnosworthy1581

Christine Sylvester is name calling necessary?It would be nice to give the video's creator/s advice free from hostility.I liked this video it was funny and i love to see people take action against animal cruelty,it's time for the voiceless species to have more support in the future. These compassionate people set a goal to giving these little hens a better life so i guess little sweaters seemed appropriate.I have seen tropical birds in a Rescue Center wear sweaters because they plucked all their feathers out because of stress...So please be kind and stop judging...

Idiots! The cold promotes feather growth, the pin feathers will catch on the "jumpers"and irritate the birds when they begin to grow and cause terrible pain. It's bloody annoying that this level of ignorance causes cruelty to hens that have already suffered so much at the hands of man.
@KTPurdy

It takes time for the feathers to grow. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of covering meantime.
