It's not that simple. It's the fact that it works between EVs. There's lots of software, charging systems and everything that need to work together to actually charge.

Look up some videos on charging EVs with portable generators and you'll learn why; Sometime inverters don't create a clean-enough sinewave to make the chargers happy, and other times the chargers complain about grounding issues. It's often not as simple as just "plug it in and it works".
@somethingsomething404

Get a cheap power pack and plug your tv into it, you’ll learn not all power is the same. There is “true sine wave” and “modified sine wave” I’m sure Ford uses the true sine wave inverters but not all do, not all inverters are safe for all loads.

Ford did their homework. This is one of the things I love about American engineered products. Often products from other countries are designed to work in theory. When you try to use them they often fail. Ground loops often Prevent you from charging with a portable charger to Ev. Ford designed this truck to operate like a home outlet. I’m curious to see if the Hyundai products have the same capacity.
@ctuan13
@ctuan13 Год назад
@@TheZeusJuice Its not usually due to "dirty" power, so much as the lack of neutral bonding. In typical household wiring, the ground and neutral are connected or "bonded". This "neutral bonding" is what EVSEs are looking for when plugged in. In the vast majority of generators and power stations, the neutral isn't bonded and so EV chargers almost always fault out and refuse to charge.

Cool video. I caught myself wondering "what's the point?" But then I realized that once all vehicles on the road are electric (in 20 years, an ICE car will be a novelty that rich people have for fun because gas is $20/gal) if I'm 2 miles from home and run out of range, my wife could just bring her car down, and as long as she has her adapter, I can have enough charge to make it home in 20 minutes. Which is about the time it would take for someone to bring me a gallon or two of gasoline.
@drister007
@drister007 2 года назад
Why would you run out of charge though? The car gives you several warnings before that and when you navigate to the location it clearly shows at what state of charge you would arrive. So in reality people don't run out of charge.
@RysterARCEE
@RysterARCEE 2 года назад
Only if the "donor car" has a 240 inverter system like the Ford. Not all EVs can transfer power like the Lightning. I think the Kia EV6 has the ability to supply power, but not at the same level as the Ford. In that case you might need 1 hour to get enough charge to make it home...as well as making sure the donor car has enough charge to also get home after supplying charge to the dead car.
@fatboy19831

@@RysterARCEE The lightning is a game changer. Companies like Tesla Can no longer ignore the fact that people want to use these huge batteries on their cars to be back up for their homes or be able to run almost any Ac device. A car like the mini with a small bettey can most likely charge at 5 miles per hour on 120 volts. In under 2 hours you should have enough charge to make it to a public charger. The Lightning can do 35 miles in one hour with a 240 outlet.

The electrical outlet/plug issue always cracks me up. The Ford charger comes with what appears to be a 50A RV plug (or is it a 30A Range/Dryer plug?), and the outlet is a 30A Twist Lock. Good to know you should pack the adapter for just such an event. Typically, your home outlet for 230V would be a 30A circuit like for a Dryer/Range, so it's all good. But most generators have the Twist Lock like the Ford, so there you go... Standardized Confusion 🤣

The math you guys did 16:00 is a little off, the Mini battery has a capacity of 32.6kWh but the USEABLE capacity is only 28.9kWh, so the losses are worse than you calculated. That makes sense because the Lightning was inverting from its DC battery to AC power, then the charger in the Mini was converting back into DC to charge its battery, and there is a loss in each of those conversions. Who knows, maybe one day Ford will create an outlet for direct DC current and then you could use DC fast charging on the vehicle you are rescuing?

Over 200k+ retail reservations in just 5 months of open reservations plus another rumored 50k+fleet&commercial reservations. Means ford doesn't need their help at all. If anything making more people want a lightning is gonna result in more people being mad they'll likely never get a lightning. Which is why Ford still hasn't re opened the reservations since closing them in Dec 2021. They can't get the battery supply to support the demand(sk innovation cells from a brand new commerce GA plant still ain't ramped and hasn't started the 2nd cell expansion plant. So unless they source cells from somewhere else and expand the new ev plant again? They ain't making more than 150k a year for this generation of the lightning. As the factory isn't capable of more than 150k right now despite expanding it twice already since 2021. But it sure is nice seeing what a nearly 6 figure 1st gen American made ev truck can do. I'm looking forward to the next gen ev ground up lightning from blue oval city in TN slated for 2025 release. Which farley claims another 75-100+miles of range and a very modern yet controversial style to it.👍🏻

The L14-30 plug on the truck is really common on 240V capable generators, that's why they're using it. The NEMA 14-50 plug that the ford charger uses is one of the most used for plugging in RV's and big appliances at home, and are fairly common out in the wild using the highest amp plug at 50 amps, so that's why it's often used on EV chargers. Tesla started that before DC fast charging was common as the next best solution. Everyone else followed suit. Unfortunately there's too many different plug types that have been out for a long time before EV's. Picking one is impossible. Not every appliance can use just one plug type. And unless you're going to wire up a dedicated EV charger, using existing outlets is kind of your only option. I agree it's not ideal, but EV chargers like the ones included with Teslas offer a wide array of plugs, no extra dongles needed most of the time. That Ford one has replaceable plug ends as well, but they don't seem to offer more than the included 2 right now. I like that I have the possibility to charge basically everywhere. I built my own adapter set to plug into many of those different locking type receptacles. I work on remote job sites at schools and being able to pull into the welding or woods classrooms using any one of their various 240V plugs is nice. A lot of woodworking machinery uses those locking plugs. Using an array of different plugs isn't really common, if your garage has a welding or RV plug, that's what you're going to stick to using, and likely leaving the charger plugged into the wall anyway.

I've since learned that the Lightning comes with a L14-30 to 14-50 adapter and perhaps the truck itself can handle the over load. Clearly it does, just trying to figure out the "why".

@@russellhogg the Ford Pro Power can supply 7200w of power on 240v, which is 240v 30A. Continuous too. A household circuit has to be that, but generators are rated differently than household sockets.

while i love you guys and ALL your videos, this one made me "ACHE" for the days when a quick gas can would solve ALL "stranded with no gas" dilemma...sheesh, what WORK ev's can be when they are out of juice! and sooooo time consuming...right dongles, right inverter, right cables, NO A/C!!! eeeshhhh!!!! if THIS is the future, we are triple effed!!! This is not "adventure", this is the stuff nightmares are made of!!!! This has increased my "range anxiety tenfold!!" because BELIEVE it or not, this video is "BEST case scenerio" for when you run out. An F150 Lightning, a cool helpful farmer, 4 good friends, just IMAGINE "dark road & no cell service!!"....Still an entertaining video tho, great job guys! BTC

Cool and all but so much hassle which is why gasoline cars will be around for a very long time. Convenience is hard to beat plus time is priceless.

If the lightning just towed the mini to the nearest charger say 4 miles away what percentage of the battery will it use?

With a gas engine it would take 5 minutes and you would already be back at the office. Need to have a reserve battery or leave a small amount to get you to a near by charger.

Interestingly if he didnt have electricfy america subscription it charges approx .43 so would actually come out to 33.11. If gas was 1.00 less expensive or what we had a year or 2 ago and not counting home charger prices would be a lot closer to gas winning possibly slightly edging out. (not justifying gas use vs electric use either)

For the converter I noticed you didn’t need a neutral grounding plug. Would you need that for a portable power station?
@Xyler94
@Xyler94 2 года назад
Ford's pro-power onboard is properly grounded, so there's no need for a grounding plug. You would need it on a generator that isn't grounded properly yes

Is there such a thing as a mobile charging outfit? Maybe a crew cab flatbed that can charge dead EV while transporting it.

Good Video's guys at TFL regarding the lightning. There is so much F**kery going on with EV's it's enough to convince us to stay away from them! Hybrids seem a heck of a lot more effective with todays vehicle culture. Next time I'm stuck on Jay Road w/my EV, I'll call the TFL rescue team!

You could have towed the cooper behind the lightening and the cooper would have charged faster through regen.

It's really bad for your EV battery to leave it at either a low or high state of charge for extended periods. Glad you only left it low overnight.

How many miles did the mini gain vs how many miles did the lightning lose?
@andrewdiamond2697

In rough numbers, the Lightning lost about 81 miles and the Mini gained about 114 miles, assuming the Lightning had the larger pack (which I think it does).
