No it shouldn't but welcome to the US of A where wasting is the norm, and needlessly killing animals that could have been avoided is acceptable. DNR usually don't relocate fish because of spreading disease or having the relocated bass mess up the equilibrium in a established pond. Mostly adding predators to a existing ecosystem does more bad than good. When they rebuild the pond it will be much more fertile due to all the growth of plants adding nutrients and that new pond will be able to grow many more 10 lb bass in the first 10 yrs than it had in the last 50 yrs. So draining will actually help the fishing.
@Chris_Clark1MaidenFan
@Chris_Clark1MaidenFan 2 года назад
Depends if you’re relocating the fish to a river or lake/pond. A river like Pickwick TN is ok but a small half acre - acre pond it’d depend if it is being maintained with bass, cat, shellcrackers or crappie.
@turkey2003
@turkey2003 2 года назад
@@Chris_Clark1MaidenFan Even a river is not worth it. The ohio DNR did a study where they moved 200 adult lake bass into a sheltered cove of the Ohio river and after 1 month they concluded they were all dead. Lake and pond fish cannot hunt in a river. They basically starve because they don't know how to hunt in a river environment. Even moving a bass from a muddy pond to a clear pond they won't do well hunting. Or a pond where forage is bluegill to a pond where forage is shad or even just a pond where forage use wood cover instead of grass.

I know this varies from state to state, but the Missouri Department of Conservation is awesome. They were draining a 80 acre pond to build a residential area and the conservation department came out, netted out fish for every bit of 5-6 days of varying types, and relocated them to lakes, ponds, and rivers nearby according to the fish species needs (like Walleye in clear flowing channels) whereas they put the channels in the rivers. There was hardly any dead fish left behind, most being shad. It only cost the conservation department $10,000 to do this. Yeah, that seems like quite a bit whenever it's just fish you're relocating, but when you factor in the fact that we're trying to save my generation and my son's generations fishing habitats it's imperative that we stop this wastefulness, not to mention that they deserve at least a fighting chance. Ever since, whenever I get a free chance in the summer, I'll go and fish/net the fish out of dried up holes from the lower river and replace them in ponds or lakes. It's something small that can go such a long way. Not to mention that you can feed so many hungry people by conserving our waters.

I totally agree PG&E did this at Three ponds around the area where I live they just stop stalking them with fish for a couple months they never told anybody they were going to be draining them and then they just drained the lake. It sucks I grew up fishing those little Lakes

The thing is, everyone sees it as someone else’s responsibility and no one ends up doing it. You as someone who works there know the lake is getting drained. You should of posted that post yourself.

Couple months ago drought did this to a local carp spot, the community effort to help was really cool. All they gotta do is make one post!

In Ontario, they decided to destroy a conservation area to build highway 407. There was American eels, turtles, all kinds of fish etc. they just drained and filled it in with no regard. We don’t even need the 407… it’s just a convenience… it’s sad the world we live in.

Dude that's actually a really great point. They could even charge people to fish but they can keep the fish for their pond, a friends pond, dinner... Jus a waste!!

Weird. I helped my grandfather drain a pond for a new sub division he was building about 20 years ago. We set fencing to strain all the fish as it drained out. We kept a ton of fish and gave a ton away. Biggest was a 13lb largemouth. Very surprised to see they just drained it without any plans for the fish that were in there. Easily could have been given to a homeless shelter.

I did dirt work for about 12 years and I'd walk the silt fence after we started stripping top soil to rescue all the turtles that were stuck inside the site, it's really sad to see just how badly we disrupt the ecosystem with every construction site, you probably never notice but they disrupt a lot of wildlife...

They drained a local small lake here in PA a few years ago and took off all restrictions for fish for a few months before the drainage. It was awesome.

I do dirt work and a lot of it involves draining ponds my boss, my brother, and I always do our best to save as many fish as we can. We’ll drain them down to a smaller hole and try to catch them with fishing poles and cast nets and will pick up the ones that get stuck in the mud but unfortunately you just can’t save them all

They did this to a couple lakes in Iowa. Had a notice out about it before hand, no limit, no minimum, keep anything you can catch. I got a bass and a few bluegill. There were fishermen all along the bank.
