In this second espisode for Students of Product design I'm looking at research.
As a student I was often tempted to skip the research phase of a design project and jump straight into sketching concepts, because that was where I felt most comfortable. It wasn't until I was employed as a product designer that I realised how important product design research is. As I've stated in the video, product design is for people, so you have to research their struggles, motivations and desires, otherwise you'll just end up designing things for yourself. Research improves the quality and outcome of your projects.
Design Research is quite a difficult subject to tackle in a RU-vid video and a lot of the time the only way to learn is to simply get out and talk to people, ask questions and develop your communication skills. It's also important whenever possible that you record your research, so you can review it to see what insight people have given you, to analyse where you can improve and when you're a student, to prove to your tutor that you haven't spent the whole time in bed!
Research is the one thing many industrial design students don't do enough in university. There is often a barrier to it, because students feel they should be spending their time learning other skills like sketching and CAD, for some reason, talking to people requires confidence, which is why students often hide behind surveys put up on forums. If you are confident you can ask people in the street, but if you want to start with something less intimidating, talk to family and friends, or join a discussion club, but don't ignore doing research, it's at the core of good product design.
I hope you enjoy Students of Product Design Episode 2, further reading can be found below:

Thank you @producttank. I have a home based company that's manufacturing electronics product in small scale while I'm the product designer & all other positions in the company lol. I'm self taught on solid works, research on manufacturing & materials but sometimes it gets tricky to decide & plan what is the best way to go & which stage is critical that we spend more time. Thanks for your tips, I now see where I can improve for my future productions.

Nice videos on demystifying ID. It would surely have been helpful to have this clarity of tutelage when I was at university. I found out the hard way that design education is still lacking in patience and common sense in presenting its basic concepts.

How did you make the potato shaver? Where did you get the plastic material for it? One thing is to draw it an come up with the idea but the other is to construct the prototype. I must say, I'm very impressed by your channel, subscribed.

Hi Donatas, the potato shaver was made from materials I have found and collected. Some spare wood, an office file, the steel from an old pancake flipper. In episode 6 I cover lots of tips that I hope you'll find useful. PT

I’m also doing a project about the elderly. I don’t know anyone who is old that lives in my uni town, and I don’t live at home. Where can I ask? I want to conduct research similar to you, had plans to take videos of some people using existing products and then trying out mine midway through Not sure if you will reply though lol
@producttank
@producttank 3 года назад
Hi Louisa, difficult to answer without knowing the products size, but depending on if you are in halls or a house, you might have elderly neighbours? Also, if the object is small, you could set up a small stall in the high street or approach people in a coffee shop. You have to be more aware of covid regulations etc now and think about other people's safety, so outside is probably better and a bit more distance than before, but it can still be done quite easily. If you approach people, explain what you are doing and ask if they would be willing to help, then they have the option to decline. Just consider how you are going to capture their feedback, how noisy is the environment for microphones etc. You may need a friend to help with the videoing and keeping equipment safe to leave you free to discuss the products and concepts. You will get rejections, but this is OK. Always explain what and where the footage will be used and get their consent. Hope this helps.

I'm finishing my GCSEs I haven't done much design technology since early years of high school what should I do in order to get into design?btw great video !
@producttank
@producttank 9 лет назад
Hi brickingawesome, if you can, you need to be thinking about choosing Art and Design Technology at A-Level, hopefully you're already studying art at GCSE. If not, there are lots of ways to get in to design, but I think studying related A-Levels is still the preferred route for university. Keep practising with sketching and making things, hopefully my next few videos will also help. If you have a careers adviser at your school have a chat with them. After A-Levels it's also usual to do a years art foundation before going to university to study design. Hope this helps. PT

@producttank 9 лет назад
Hi Samantha Fr, this is the same as industrial design. There has been masses of debate for years over the difference between product design and industrial design, with very little conclusion other than that it comes down to personal preference and also I think your age as to whether you want to call yourself a product designer or an industrial designer. +producttank what universities would you recommend attending? thanks! :)
@producttank
@producttank 9 лет назад
Hi Terrell, I can't recommend any universities as I haven't set foot on one for 20 years. Some have good reputations, Loughborough, Central St. Martins, Brunel and lots of others, I went to Plymouth which at the time wasn't the highest rated, but when I visited on an open day and it had a really nice feel. I also visited Woolverhampton and just couldn't see myself spending 3 years there. That's the main thing, you have to find a place you're comfortable with, there's no point in going to the best place in the world for 3 years if you're miserable the whole time as it will effect the quality of your work, so choose a few places, visit them and see how they and the area feel. Hope this helps a bit. PT

producttank Hi, I want to know if there is some good online resources that can help me in the product design process " as academic resources " , and from your experience what is the opportunities in the market for product designers , Thanx in advance .
@joelincoln6560
@joelincoln6560 9 лет назад
Mouhamed Alaa Hi Mouhamed. Personally I wouldn't rely on online sources too much as the majority have very little academic merit. You can use them for research but don't rely on them too much for vital information for a report or essay. If it is for design process you should check out three awesome books: 1. Research methods for product design. 2. Prototyping and model making for product design and 3. Drawing for product designers. These are all made by the same publisher and are like an encyclopedia on design methods. In the back they also have further reading lists for the more analytic side of design ( and some philosophic) such as Change by design (Tim Brown) or the Design agenda (Rachel Cooper).
