I quit my regular job in 1978 and started reselling by 1980. This included craft shows, antique fairs, antique shows, etc. My husband followed me a few years later. In 1996 we started our own estate sale business, including running a little shop open only on weekends. We traveled around the country to auctions, including wonderful farm auctions. In 1998 We began selling on ebay. I have always been a doll collector and still sell mostly vintage & antique dolls. My husband passed away four years ago. I'm 76 and still sell on ebay. Luckily I have a large inventory & my son does all the shipping. Looking back on my life, the decision to become a reseller was the smartest thing I ever did. My husband was a Vietnam Vet with PTSD and never did well in a regular job. We had over twenty years of a fun & interesting life that I wouldn't trade for anything.

There was reselling before ebay through vintage and Antique dealers, you build a client list and source for things to resell. My father supported a family of 7 doing this for 60+ years. (We did not go without as children)

I am finding good will and places like that are going up in prices due to the videos on resellers.. i find that rummage sales are now priced what it saids online too.. I do find it harder and harder to get good things for a good price to resell.. I think 5 years from now will be different then today..

LOL, I started helping my mom at the flea market when I was really young back in 1975. My ex made a lot of money and got lots of stuff bartering. It’s always been a part of my life. It’s not going anywhere. The poorer the working poor get, the more we need reselling. I say we quit consuming everything new until the rich folks at the top can feel it and they’re crying! Our grandparents taught us how to repair reuse and trade for a reason.

I think as the economy crashes people are going to be looking for deals on items. The secondary used market should perform stronger during these times. Remember that when pricing items, people are broke and looking for deals.

In my opinion, many full time resellers on RU-vid throw shade at people who “work for the man”. You may have just been working for the wrong man. I work full time and have PTO, vacation, etc. Also off on weekends. Pretty easy to resell on the side and make some extra income while still getting a steady paycheck. Anyone who can do it full time more power to you. For most people part time is the way to go.
@mikeyb1981
@mikeyb1981 11 месяцев назад
I also think the description of how hard reselling is , is a bit of gate keeping. It’s super easy. Buy low, sell higher, ship. Sure you can add clean and test but that’s not so hard either. No need to try and scare people off, there is enough to go around.
@bennystratton7734
@bennystratton7734 11 месяцев назад
@@mikeyb1981sorry your wrong first of all not enough to go around especially when there more sellers then buyers in general across all platforms especially on ebay so no right now there are not enough buyers to go around now if 50% of online resllers jump shop which I think there is a very likelihood that could happen come tax season 2024 (Jan to April) all the whiners that didn't want to pay tax or don't think they should have to pay taxes are all getting a 1099k no matter what they think there will be a mass exodus because of that but as a full-time online resller since 98' that purge or draining of the swamp will be for the better regarding online reselling. As for hard work oh yes it is its not just what you stated don't people wish it was that easy you have to take pictures. Write descriptions. Take measurements, do customer service (dealing with questions about items, replying to offers, dealing with negative feedback or item not received cases or item not as described cases), packaging ( how to package properly...not half asked), printing postage there are many many more things as an online reseller that you or others might consider work but for pioneers of online reselling who have been doing it full time as long as I have (25 years) or longer do not see it as "WORK" because we truly love what we do and mountain of perks that go along with it. As the saying goes if you love what you do for work it's going to be Iike you never worked a day in your life. So no ot trying to scare someone out of doing this occupation/profession just not going to sugar coat it either like you did (knowingly or unknowingly) they shouid k own exactly what there getting into before they make the decision instead of being told "it's essy" when that is farthest from the truth! Heck I even seen a youtuber recently state its feeling more like a job (i.e. work) that's just it if you do not love every aspect of this occupation/profession you most definitely will feel like it's work or a job....it's not east by any stretch of the imagination
@YvonThriftyRich
@YvonThriftyRich 11 месяцев назад
agree OMGosh ... I keep it part time on purpose. Did the Full Time with employees ect...no thanks anymore. Part time is more fun which is part of the point. If I need more money, I would level up a higher profit product category rather than level up amount of inventory, employees and headaches LOL
@Ir-of4zn

Instead of saying reselling is not a "real" job...it is not the "traditional" job. Also, reselling is not going away...and selling is not going away. Infact, some of the big box stores are doing veros on their products, to set the stage to resell their used products. No, reselling is NOT going away, and is sustainable. There are two ways to make money in this country: To SELL something and/or to provide a SERVICE.

The people that have been facilitated to an 8:00 to 5:00 job have a lifestyle that they don’t want to give up. What I found out with reselling is that we give up a lot of the “extras” in life to be a reseller. We have an urgency to be efficient and spend our money wisely. We don’t want to have a lot of debt due to the ups and downs in the market places and seasons. But what they don’t get is the freedom we feel! We are literally in control of our lives, how much money we make, the hours we work and how much money we make! It can be a hard life but there are so many possibilities and perks with those challenges.
@bennystratton7734

Exactly do you have to ask your boss to go on a break no you can take a break when ever you want and take as many breaks through out the day as you want. You can have your family help you at work (if you care about seeing your family as much as you can) you don't have to request vacation or sick leave or time of for a new baby or death. In the family these are just some of the "PERKS" that to me are my motivation the last 25 years and the next 25 years its worth there weight in gold to me!

Reselling is the oldest form of business and the foundation of all business. From real estate, stock market, all stores , medicine , etc.. We don’t have to worry about reselling or over saturation. Many think it’s easy but the work alone will filter out many. Plus some may not even get started over fear of saturation. So those who are committed will reap the harvest.
@bennystratton7734
@bennystratton7734 11 месяцев назад
I have to disagree (you can read my other comment) but right now we are in a period were reselling online in general over all platforms there are more sellers then buyers sorry this (and bolo, what sold and tag along videos showing 1000's of your competitors what exactly to source and pick) will always cause oversaturation of itens. Niches or categories fact no debating it. If your a smart business person you keep those secrets to your chest especially if you worked 25 years full time reselling online like myself to figure out what sells and what does not thankfully most youtubers either tell there viewers it's a waste of there time to sell or they never talk about it and after 25 years of my hard work I'm not about to give those trade secrets out so the itej, niche or Category can be flooded its called business ethics you don't want to hurt yourself or others in the short or long term) just for some measly short term youtube provit

I think one of the threats will come from companies who decide they want to control the secondary market for their goods as well. Some companies will cut deals with marketplaces to not allow their goods to be sold without authorization (like possibly Apple with Amazon). Some will offer customers an easy way to return their old products (say for store credit) which will make people be much less likely to sell it themselves or donate it. Some companies are experimenting with this already I believe. Of course, some also play games with trademark and copyright law and try to control it that way, but I think that will eventually get taken care of legislatively.

I think with social media and people growing up in the technology era, the concept of reselling has been pigeonholed into the selling of used goods from Goodwill/Thrift stores onto online platforms. And some of the demographic today just haven’t been exposed to other types yet, or taken the time to look at the history. And we know there are tons of people who resell in other ways but we don’t see their process because it’s not online. So a lot of people just haven’t connected the dots to the many other forms of reselling. That might be a good video topic! We live in a fast changing world right now and how we live and interact has rapidly changed in just the last 30 years, but I think reselling will continue to grow. Really loved seeing all you guys in one room! ❤

Someone was talking about a guy who bought storage locker for something under 20, it was full of airplane parts. Had no place to get it empty in time, ended up selling locker for 5k. Guy told his buyer he was embarrassed to tell him what he paid for locker. The buyer laughed and told him just 4 of the parts in the locker were worth 25k. He said he couldn't sleep for a week thinking how much money he could have made. There ya go, airplane parts.

I am ticked off over the PROMOTED LISTING FEES. Further disgruntling, is the fact that if One does Not “Promote” their listings eBay will bury your listing. Zero traction. Thus forced to promote. What feels rather egregious to me is that eBay is charging that percentage against, not only the ITEM, but on the Total, to include the taxes and shipping. I can’t believe this IS Legal to charge us on taxes AND shipping. Geez 😢

I work 4 hours a day and get the best insurance, compared to prior jobs. Reselling is fun, relaxing, unknown what I will find and sell next. There was reselling even BEFORE EBAY, and similar platform. People have been doing Yard Sales, selling at Flea Markets, Craft Shows, AntiqueShows, etc, way before the Internet. If Ebay and similar platforms went away, those other venues would ramp up again, to help fill the void. My first reselling was Comic Books, BEFORE EBAY. I used to place ads in Comic Book related Magazines and Newspapers. Classified ads in Newspapers, was the way to go back then, if you wanted to sell a Dining Room Table, Sofa, etc.

Future threat of selling online depends on each individuals feelings on ESG business model and CBDC that has been shoved upon the world. Example Project Icebreaker, anyone or business that refuses to comply with the latest climate dictates could be cut off from all commerce. Also how each person feels about Govt. having full control of money going in and coming out of every person’s account.

I believe the most at risk category, to changes in the future, is the "low hanging fruit". Stuff like common used clothing, most media, and used common toys. Stuff that usually Sells for under $20 right now. Vero is also going to prohibit ALOT more clothing in the next few years. Going to be harder to unload your used Nike, Adidas, etc. Companies want to close down those sales, because they are losing $ to resellers. If you cant resell that Nike, people will be forced to buy New Merch from those companies. VERY SOON, also, there wont be any nore DVDs, CDs, Games, etc. Everything will be online So those resellers also will be deeply impacted. Collectiblbles will not be as affected, because those items are harder to find items in general.

@@DeucesChanceBrianAmyT2T He says "in the future" and I totally understand his drift...he's right on with possibilities ... actually as far as Vero related theories, the road is being paved as we speak .... And think about how Amazon does a lot of Sellers with a hot item...all the sudden Amazon carries it too... And the hard copies of games, movies , music he is probably mentioning, started happening some time ago. ie Microsoft Office used to be hard copy you could easily reload when you bought a new computer, uhhh yeah, now its almost 100% download only.

Kevin, one of the things that I took away from listening to Mel (Australia) was that she gets a lot of her books from the dump. The dump is run differently in her country than the US. She said that they didn't do many "yard" sales, so when people had things that were still usable, they had a place at the dump to deposit their items. Then the workers would come and fill a truck bed and take it back to be put in their gift shop. Then people could come in and purchase the things that they wanted. So, she purchased a lot of her books from the dump at a really good price. Sad that we don't do this in our country!

My husband is retiring next year at almost 63 due to two back surgeries and problems with his legs due to all his surgeries that are making it hard for him to work. We are planning on taking resell to the next level and going full-time with both of us listing. We hope to hold off Social Security for a few years and not have to pull it until full retirement age ,and support ourselves on a small pension, savings, and mostly reselling. There’s so many options nowadays. So many things you can specialize in. Or you can be the reseller that just buys a little of everything ,which is kind of what we do. Although I do prefer jewelry and crafting stuff. I sell everything. I am very part-time right now have been since 2002. But I’m working to get to full-time by next year. I think reselling is amazing and I wish more people would do it because it would help so many people that are barely making it on that 9 to 5 job, but they won’t even consider a side hustle.

My neighbor owns a trucking company. And he was telling me they are having a hard time getting their loads. Because they are still on boats out in China. All stuff for Christmas stock. Bad for his trucking company. But got me thinking.... good for resellers. We've got the goods! :)

Great video! I think reselling is doing an enormous benefit for the environment. There too many cheaply produced low quality items being made today that don’t last. There will always be demand for quality products. And resellers are diverting so much stuff from the landfill while providing a service for those looking for these items.

I returned to reselling on Ebay after almost 20 years. Back then, i did it just for fun and to have something to do while i was laid off. When i retired i started doing it again to supplement SS. I have more serious needs and goals this time around. There were lots and lots of changes i have had to adapt to. So I think i have adaptability. I'm just getting started, and I'm doing surprisingly well after 1 year, so i cant see it going away in 5 years.

I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, and this was the best video yet. As a fellow reseller, with the majority of my personal income coming from reselling, not only is the industry growing, it’s rapidly growing. The bad resellers will fail, of course, but there’s so much money to me made in this industry. Then some.

^5 for making it work! That said, changes are coming. I was at a tag sale this morning, found zilch, with a guy looking for shirts. Turns out the seller does eBay and nothing doing. That niche is full, and so are a lot of others. What sells or what to sell keeps morphing, and as long as you can figure out where the holes are, you can stay in the game. What you guys NEVER bring up are the sellers who got into it because we're disabled enough that a 9-5 can't happen. (that included a ton of old-line jewelry sellers.) I used to resell, but medical problems combined with platform problems knocked me out. I didn't refuse to bend; it was quit or get bent over. The accounting crapola made it happen more quickly, but that's all. I needed help making life easier, and my State and the platforms made it harder, especially in the niches I was forced into. Out I went.

But the fact is telling your competitors all over the world on youtube sorry no matter what anyone thinks we are all each others competitors and this type of content works when there are more buyers then sellers like pre covid and during covid now the time we are in the hard cold truth is there are more sellers then buyers across the entire online reselling spectrum especially on ebay so common sense is if you tell all your viewers what exactly source via bolo or what sold or tag along videos there all going to go out source it and flood the market which is not good with a seller to buyer ratio of 10 to 1 across all selling platforms/marketplace what worked prior to covid and during covid is now catching up and proving its not working now because less buyers more sellers. No smart business tells there competition what exactly to sell its not a sustainable model as sellers are now finding out....do youtube content creators not care about the negative effects long term what solds. Bolos. And tag along videos have on the reselling occupation/profession or who they hurt (other fellow resllers....this goes into business ethics) I feel the revised tax law I'm dumbfounded it took 25 years for them to revise a draconian tax law in the first place from $20,000 and 200 transactions to $600 and 1 transactions it will purge the online reselling occupation/profession of new lazy high horse resllers (resllers that started since covid) and resllers that have been gaming the system for 30 years the word "and" was a loophole meaning if a seller made 5-6-7 figures but only had 199 transactions by law ebay and Amazon and any other platform did not have to report the seller to the irs i.e they didn't get a 1099k but just Because the platforms did not report you and you didn't get a 1099k did not mean you didn't have to report those 5-6'7 figures you made online the responsibility was on you to self report. Just like there is speeding signs that state a speeding limit the majority go faster then that speeding limit the minority stay at or under. Well taxes are no different especially with the old law if the platforms were not reporting the majority did not self report there earnings the government finally realized how much they were being cheated by the tax cheats and tax evaders (I hate to say my fellow resllers) all this law did was take the reporting responsibility out of your hands and put it into the hands of the platforms for those that do it the right way either pay tax on your earnings or use deductions to get it to as close to 0 as possible we have nothing to worry about those that have a high horse that think there to good to pay taxes or are tax cheats/tax evaders are going to have a rude awakening come jan 2024 when they all get 1099k this is going to drain the swamp of excess sellers that (either started during covid or are tax cheats/evaders) the occupatio/profession does not need. It will purge them out because they are to lazy to learn how to do there tax and if there complaining about paying tax there certainly not going to pay a cpa to help them figure it out.... Online reselling will pivot there will be less sellers and more buyers hopefully those disgruntled sellers will bad mouth selling online telling everyone if they make $600 they are getting a 1099k and have to pay taxes this will hopefully help keep it from going back to how it is now more sellers then buyers

Reselling will always be around...what is/will change is What you sale, HOW you get it, and HOW much profit you will make off of said item. I for one sold here and there...nothing big for years...a year ago my father past away and I have tons of art and comics and nick knacks I've been selling and made good money. To me it's all profit so it's a dream come true. Buuut at some point I won't have anything from that left to sale so I'd be back to here and there sales..ebb and flow.

Hi Kevin: hey, YOU can always make educational modules on the side, or full time if needed. That is what I was doing for a local big college when I wasn’t writing ‘how to’ manuals on every aspic of installing, starting, running and maintaining a full factory of completely automated, robotic manufacturing work cell lines for automobile, truck, heavy truck and jet airliners, and complete manufacturing plant certification. I wrote and created video training modules, full time for a few years. This type of training became necessary during the COVID years and now they continue to be utilized in the educational field. Most of my grandchildren are homeschooled and I’ve seen training modules being used, over & over. Of all my grandchildren, the homeschooled kids that used educational training modules were far more advanced compared to those who attended public school. This may be because the training module is more like one-on-one, although I don’t really understand why (yet). With your educational background and abilities, Kevin and your video-graphing skills, you’d make great educational training modules! Even though you left the school, you are still teaching, everyday! I’ve learned a LOT from you! So… if the bottom ever drops out from reselling… though I can’t imagine that ever happening! I think buying and selling used items are the future of how people will own anything. Look at the amount of people who lease vehicles! I loved today’s video!

I joined eBay to sell baseball cards but have evolved into a selling everything store. I have been doing well and have almost 30 followers and an average of 90 sales in 90 days. It is an up and down operation as far as selling goes. I still have my day job as this is my side deal, but if I had to do it for a living, I could see the stress in that.

Big shout out to you full-timers. I did reselling pretty much full-time during the pandemic (started in October of 2019) but now part-time that I am back at my full-time job. Reselling is a grind, you have to be so dedicated and be very self-motivated to really make it full-time. I know full-time is not for me. The hubs and I both get paid once a month on the last day of the month. eBay reselling bridges that gap for us when we run short (which is often) once a month pay sucks. For me, I love the thrill of the hunt, finding something for .25 and selling it for $5,500 (comic book first appearance of Hulk) but also, the bread and butter stuff that keeps money rolling in. As a part-time reseller, I could do this indefinitely. I usually devote at least two evenings a week to reselling and Saturdays of course for thrifting or going to estates sales and auctions.

Sustainable isn't the industry of choice. It's the PERSON and the PASSION with the SKILLS that makes long term success. If you LOVE it and don't want to LEAVE it when times get hard you WILL find a way to make it work. Have my own commercial real estate business about 20 years now. Industry has had ups and down and lots of people have left but I thrive and in top percentile nationally.

My friend has a shop which his dad owned and operated it's like an eBay store front it got passed down to him and has now been operating for over 50 yrs and performing pretty well. So this is proof reselling is a legitimate way to make money. But I do believe it's going to get harder for resellers to sell used merchandise because the market is getting flooded with affordable products which are easily obtainable, I can't stand when I do a price comp and some idiot has it listed for 2 dollars which is way under market stuff like that is also hurting resellers.

I resell stuff (part time) but see myself as a Re-Cycler in that I sell stuff to get money to buy stuff I want not as a living, but remember since ebay started there are many newer platforms that employ people as do the many shipping companies and companies supplying packaging etc for resellers. People having yard sales - estate sales etc are becoming more prevalent because of resellers so really all round reselling is a much bigger employment business than what a lot of people realise - worldwide.

I look at it this way, and not being political in any way. I was raised on second hand from hand me downs to garage sale clothes, shoes & such. We were "Green" before it was cool! I raised my kids that way and they will raise there's the same. The clearance is the first place to go in the store, no matter grocery or clothes or household. People love broke in, preloved, & classic. They were made better and last longer. So, we believe that it will be around until the Lord comes for us. We can eBay, garage sale, yard sale, antique, craft show, thread up, poshmark, mercari, etc. until then. We love the channel and the life we can have doing this. We like you had jobs before and yes we can get social sec. But, the question is will it be there? Thank you for the terrific show. Have a great weekend.

Great Video! What a fantastic group of sellers! I am a bit worried about Ebay (My main platform) Ebay must show profits to it's share holders. The main focus of these profits are on the backs of sellers through fees and promoted listings. How much more can Ebay extract from sellers? I so wish Ebay would focus it's profit increase strategy into increasing numbers of buyers instead of increasing expenses for us sellers!

I am ticked off over the PROMOTED LISTING FEES. Further disgruntling, is the fact that if One does Not “Promote” their listings eBay will bury your listing. Zero traction. Thus forced to promote. What feels rather egregious to me is that eBay is charging that percentage against not only the ITEM, but on the Total, to include the taxes and shipping. I can’t believe this IS Legal to charge us on taxes AND shipping. Geez 😢
