30th anniversary should have been $200 draft boxes in hopes of hooking the new generation on real versions of old cards. Not sure how far nostalgia can carry the reserve list when the most popular way to play now days is a casual singleton format that is friendly to proxies.

Just sold most of my Dual lands to afford my new houses closing costs. I will miss my Useas greatly, but someday I hope to buy back. Worth it for the house though!

Nothing like black and white borders. Love holding and playing with a deck with all the old art. It makes it feel so much more special. Got mult commander decks with new and old cards and its so cool shuffling and seeing cards 20 plus years apart all on theme and synergistic.

Buyouts still exist but on a smaller scale and the people doing it have learned its advantageous to be quiet about it and not to move the market all at once. ;)

Agreed Rudy, those sets are fun. We did a FE draft no too long ago and it was super fun (games did take ages 😂).

Most old school Magic players are in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s+. Another 10 years and 33% of them kick the bucket. It’s hard to see vintage or Magic lasting another 30 years, because Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro, and the secondary market are not friendly to new players. That is why the retention rate of new players are so small.

This means that NOW is the time to buy old cards!

after all the reprints of the last 5 years; i give up. its a betrayal. I have been collecting since the 3rd grade, i still have my falling star; because i couldnt afford a chaos orb. Now i dont buy anything, and if a good offer was made on my collection (65% valuation i guess) i wouldnt hesitate to sell it.

Any new players just don't have the heart to spend on Reserve list. I think they would rather spend it on command bling cards. That way they can play and show off their cards.

I love picking up those nostalgic cards - Mirage, Alliances, Ice Age, and yes, Fallen Empires and Homelands. I did a trade-in for recent cards for Adun Oakenshield at my LGS. And some I binder up, some I play. I'm going to get my value enjoying them as-is, and if they're worth more later that's a bonus to me. I'm looking at collecting those sets because that's when I played, taking it slow and steady. Always appreciate the chat Rudy.

So strange to me that people enjoy new Magic cards more than the classics

I am in my 40's. Admittedly, nostalgia is the primary driver of my interest in MTG. People like me, who got into the game early, want to purchase cards they couldn't afford when they were younger. However, with all of the new rules, power creep, and countless sets being pumped out every other month, it does not give me hope that any of the older cards will retain much value. The game is way too complicated now with Plainswalkers, Sagas, Commanders, and all the other stuff. The days of clean white borders with real artwork also seem to be gone. It looks like cheap garbage now.

Just check 2017….prizes are still sooo much higher than back then! E.g. I bought a U Raging River SP for $35 in 2018…now its pushing $85-100

I for one support you doing deep dives on the 90s sets. Bring back the throne of sealed boxes to school the unwashed masses, just like you used to back in the day!

21:00 problem with this is you can more or less get the same exact experience with friends by picking up any modern box and drafting with that. It doesn't matter if it's some 20 yr old set or the flavor of the month. Nostalgia bait and "it's never going to be reprinted" is not enough to sustain the market.

Yes, old cards are fun. The Dark has always been my favorite set. I play weekly Pauper at my LGS. I've a ton of Urza's Legacy extra cards. I've proposed to them that we should have a 40 card deck night using my Alliance commons (I've anywhere from 12-24 each common beyond playsets in my collection). There is definitely some interest.

Rudy, can you do a video about the "heart of fyendal" and other flesh and blood power? I would like to see where you place them, ie. do you consider any of the cards to be power nine equivalent? What are you holding on to?

He is right it is primarily CEDH and very few EDH players buying up old vintage magic cause in CEDH some of them are kind of mandatory, just got done with a round of tournaments this month here more people were interested in buying old cards to un-proxy their decks. proxy friendly just helps to get people into the game with little to no cost and eventually they may or may not want to buy them and thats okay whats important is getting more people into the game we all love. I will never un-proxy my Stonkside Extortionist though I love it too much lol

Hope nobody was crazy enough to invest millions upon millions of dollars in reserved list.

EDH is the main driver these days: Mox Diamond, Survival, Metalworker, Grim Monolith, Lake of the Dead, Null Rod, Braingeyser, Fork etc. These prices have shown the biggest uptick from the lows.

I hope another collectors set comes out that makes some more reserve list proxies. Maybe they might be accessible someday.

The blue dual lands seem like they are still going up. I wouldn't be surprised if the others eventually get pulled along with them.

I have an almost full collection of old sets since Unlimited/The Dark, because that's the time I started playing. I am with you in that I think certain cards will hold value because they won't be reprinted. The question is how powercrept cards will hold up over the years because the commander players will not covet them anymore and they will only hold value for collectors.

having to rebuild the engine in my car, having to sell cards. so far only sold 1 reserve list card, and that was to a friend of mine who had been looking for one (and i have more). might have to dump a bunch more, but i kinda plan to just dump my redundant commander stuff (stuff that can get reprints), even if i have to take a big hit on it. i am super poor, but i have a decent collection of Reserve list stuff, it's literally my savings. but i feel like the market is ready to explode again on prices, it's just going to take the economy to turn around and get people feeling a bit more hopeful again. hopefully that will happen once the election passes.

There’s a cap on this stuff is my feeling, it is not an investment that goes up and up without a cap. If you’re talking about real rarity, like a beta PSA 9 or 10 or an alpha then sure… but transacting collectors edition and played cards is not rare… not really. People want to act like they have Babe Ruth cards and they don’t. There is a cap to what those cards will ever be worth because people like me will always dump out around wizards dumb money grabs like M30 or whatever dumba$€ thing they do and just rebuy at a lower price because I just play out school. So I sold a year ago and am buying at half the price…. I’ve done it several times and it will continue to do that.

In times of quantitative tightening, ie high interest rates, money flows from higher risk assets to lower risk assets. Seems like the market is saying new Magic is less risky than old Magic.

I remember masters edition online, wizards made money selling digital packs. They can make money selling physical packs with duals and all the fun stuff. Commander and legacy will take off in paper again.

A decade ago I was a TO for a LGS and grinding magic tourneys. From time to time I like to check in. I got back into collecting cards 2 months ago, looked at magic, Luaghed and started collecting pokemon 151. Best. Decision. Ever.

Rudy! Thanks for mentioning Fallen Empires! Still my favorite set. Why? Because you could get it! Try getting ANYTHING other than FE and it was not possible. Unless you were willing to pay $10 per pack for revised! We played this by taking 10 sealed packs and constructing a deck. It is some of my best MTG memories.

I know nothing about magic, always wanted to collect but parents wouldn’t buy it and friends wouldn’t play it. I would like to hear about old sets. But mostly content geared towards collecting. Was the goal to collect every card? Subsets? Rarity? And how a new collector could put together an admirable collection of past sets. Would like to see some of the art and history you know about past sets sure.
