The wind, simple answer! It's an issue at times on these large lakes. And you need the extra power for distance casting at times.

Without doubt the best trout fishing in the UK. Absolutely great value.

@@eoincampbell-flyfishermana4737 Hi, most of the Brown trout in the reservoir are wild. You can tell the stocked brownies. The lake record which was over 20lb was deemed to be a native wild brownie not a stocked fish. The stocked brown trout are stocked as fingerlings and grow well in the rich upland waters. The reservoir holds good stocks of coarse fish mainly perch, chub and roach. Their fry support and sustain the larger trout. The dry fly and top of the water sport is good. However if you want to target the bigger fish then fish deep (di 7 or di 8 sinking line) Fish large wets and lures deep and slow. A humunus single or tandem are favourites. These do catch more than their fare share of large trout, be they browns , rainbows or tigers. (There are tiger trout present. Thou not many seen).. I live on the Welsh border in Herefordshire, my local rivers are small in size (the rivers Arrow and Lugg) . Both contain large numbers of wild brown trout, that can average between 12 to 17 inches in length. These are fishable on the wye and Usk Foundation wild stream passport scheme. I cut my formative seasons on the rivers & loughs of Ireland's Denegal west coast where our brown trout are VERY brown and wild. I know you're correct; if I fished sub-surface, deeper, I'd get bigger fish. But call me silly... I just love the brownies of the top... oh, and your grayling (which we don't have back home!). For me, sincerely, I'd be happy with two or three off the top on an outing. It's just my drug; my fix or medicine. I know you'll get that 👌🎣

@@eoincampbell-flyfishermana4737 Clywedog is the closest I've seen and fished to a wild west of Ireland lough. It's a bit of a cross between Caramore lake. Corrib and kylemore. It's not overly large when compared to the Midlands reservoirs such as Draycote. However it is a wild windswept place. If you really like dryfly fishing for truly wild brownies, give the Elan valley a go. There are literally miles and miles of bank fishing on 3 upland reservoirs. Very few anglers fish it as the brown trout are small and dark but truly wild. Sometimes you can get lucky and the average size increases to over a pound or so. There are larger specimens but rarely caught. These wild trout are not weather shy and seem to be only taken off the top with dries or shallow fished nymphs. Usually dark patterns work best.

In our opinion fly fishing will actually catch more fish in skilled hands. Like many trout venues in Wales the rule is fly fishing only. It is not that difficult to learn.
