Reset Heating Element on GE Dishwasher that no longer heats or dries dishes

If the heating element is no longer getting hot then you may need to reset it. Watch this to see how.
My dishwasher was out of warranty and I ended up having to call the repair guy. I highly recommend you do this first before you do anything else to troubleshoot the issue.

I came here to post a quick " Thank You!" as this fixed my problem and is so easy to do once you know how it can happen (big storm tripped the breaker box) and is so easy to fix. Of course GE does not make this easy to get to as I had to pull out the full Dishwasher to find and click the switch back to the proper position. One day GE will make a model that is easy to fix and service problems.

I want to take a moment and say thank you very much for this video. I had just bought a new heating element and installed it and it still was not working. I was about to give up and buy a new dishwasher and I just happened across your video. So thank you so much for this valuable and simple solution.

I just came here to say this fixed my GE!! I had replaced the valve and I guess this had tripped when I shut the power off to it. So if you ever have to do repairs on your dishwasher or have a power outage and suddenly you don't have heat to your dishwasher, try this first. Thank you so much!!!

I wasted $70 on applicance repair. Then $90 on parts, then fixed it by pushing this button. Next step was replacing it, so I am still at least $500 ahead! Thanks for this video! Took less than 5 minutes to fix.

This video saved me from buying a new DW. Knowing what to look for, I just took the kick plate off and put my arm in to feel under the tub for anything that had two wires attached. In a minute or two I found the thermostat and as you said there was a button between where they went in. When I pushed it, it made a click and I knew I had found it. DW is heating like new now. THANKS! (Turn the power off before you put your arm in there)

It worked! I had seen other videos (none which said to do this first!), and I was lead to believe I may either need a new heating element or a new flood switch or possibly both. It was a good thing that I couldn't find the right flood switch for my dishwasher because that led me back to youtube for some reason, and thought I should watch a couple more videos, then I found yours! I wasn't sure that just pushing this button would work for my situation because I thought I had fried my dishwasher with vinegar while trying to clean it. I always use 1 cup vinegar and run a cycle while it's empty to clean it, but the vinegar I had was called "Cleaning Vinegar" and I didn't know it had other stuff in it. When the cycle finished it still had 4" of soap suds at the bottom. I had to keep running the dishwasher to try and get it rinsed out thoroughly. Instead of the cleaning vinegar rusting out the parts, I think the dishwasher just got overworked/overheated and that's why it stopped heating up the water and drying. Anyways, really glad I found this tip! I was almost going to just buy a whole new DW!

My dishwasher was just out of a one year warranty and did this, so very glad that I found this information because the manufacturer does everything it can to make it difficult for the homeowner to fix these little problems. Thanks for sharing!

Oh my hell, am I glad I found this video! Thank you so much for posting this. I replaced the pump on our dishwasher and then the heating element would not work. Pulled the machine out again and tested the element. All good. went over everything and totally looked at the reset switch but thought that it was a temp sensor of some sort. Anyway, reinstalled the machine and still NO heat. Frustrated, I came back to YT to try and find an answer and lo and behold I find your vid. It worked! Thank you!!!

I want to say a huge THANK YOU for posting this video. Our heating element fell on one side and burned a hole in the plastic tub. It was 1.5 years old and GE wouldn't repair. We found a video how to fill the hole with plumbers epoxy and bought extra brackets to hold th element up. Ran dishwasher...no heat. Ordered a new element (GE must have a lot of problems with the old element because they had already replaced it with a new one with mechanisms so the element no longer can fall in on the back). Put new element in and ran dishwasher...no heat. I was on the brink of buying a new dishwasher when I found your video. Had hubby reset the heating element button (he could reach it by just pulling the unit out based on your tutorial), and then ran the dishwasher. BAM! We had heat and dry dishes! You have saved us $700+ on replacing a dishwasher that was 1.5 years old. I can not tell you how appreciative we are that you shared this little trick! Have a blessed day!

What a simple fix. It usually happens when there is a thunderstorm or a power surge in the central breaker box and the breaker trips. Double the security preventing a fire etc. Try this first before you call a repair man and pay for something so simple to reset.

Thank You! My GE profile dishwasher stopped heating and all the dishes came out soaked. I was able to find the reset button and now it's finally creating steam again. Thankfully I didn't have to flip the dishwasher over to find the reset button. I pulled mine out slightly and found it in the bottom right corner. Now it's running like new. Glad I didn't have to buy any replacement parts.

gdt695ssj5ss Great tip and worked for me after two other failed strategies! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Including my model number here so others will find your amazing video. As another commenter stated, on this model that button is on the back right of the unit so you need to slide the dishwasher out but not necessarily tip it on the side. And as other commenters also noted, most of the internet advice in this issue is to replace the flood switch but the part commonly recommended is not applicable to this model. the correct replacement part did not solve the issue for me and I wasted some time on that.

Most likely a manual reset safety overload. Which means if the button pops there was higher than normal current /temp running through the heating element.

TURN OFF THE POWER!
@geoffrundlett1697
@geoffrundlett1697 Месяц назад
Turn off the power before working on equipment; pushing the "reset" button works because you are operating the mechanical part. After power is restored, electricity will make the heating element work if the reset breaker doesn't trip again.
@javac08642
@javac08642 Год назад
Yes you can reset your heating element, it is a circuit breaker to prevent excessive current, burning up the wiring and causing a fire in or under your dishwasher. PLEASE BE ADVISED: As a repairman you need to ask yourself WHY the breaker is tripping in the first place? Is it just a bad breaker or is it another issue? Is the heating element intact and in one piece? because heating elements can burn up and cause electrical arcing. Does your heating element have obvious signs of corrosion? Does the heating element have pits, divots or bulges on it? Have you checked the heating element for continuity and resistance and compared that to manufacturer specifications? Please pay attention to this because it could save you from severe property damage or injury to yourself and your family, and whatever you do.... Do not ever ever EVER bypass the breaker or upsize it. Best wishes

Hi, java08642. My GE Profile PDW8280NSS dishwasher has the opposite problem. I ran a load of dishes last night, and this morning the green "clean" light was on, indicating that the cycle was complete, but *_THE HEATING ELEMENT WAS STILL ON!_* The darn thing had been baking my dishes all night long! I turned off the circuit breaker, waited an hour or so for it to cool down, and turned the breaker back on. The heating element stayed off. Do you have any idea what caused this?
@claygriffin9136

Hey Dave, let me know what you come up with, I just had the same exact problem! I just flipped the breaker off and am waiting. @@ncdave4life
@ncdave4life
@ncdave4life 8 месяцев назад
I will. Or if you figure it out,@@claygriffin9136, please tell me! For now, I think I'll just get in the habit of only running the dishwasher when I plan to be home for a couple of hours. When I start the dishwasher I'll tell my phone, "Hey, Google, set alarm for 90 minutes from now," and then I'll check on it to make sure it's not stuck with the heating element on. (I've had this dishwasher for nine years (got it used), and I've never timed the wash cycle. My guess is about 90 minutes, but I'm unsure.)
@ncdave4life
@ncdave4life 6 месяцев назад
@@claygriffin9136, I've run the dishwasher a couple of times since then (with the same settings: "cook ware" and "heated dry"), and it worked fine. I can't possibly fix a problem which doesn't recur. So, for now, I'm just only starting the dishwasher when I expect to be around to check it 130 minutes later. When I start the dishwasher, I talk to my phone: *_"Hey, Google, set alarm for two hours and ten minutes from now."_* If the problem recurs, and if it gets to the point where I can reliably reproduce it, then I'll try to fix it. Maybe a relay is getting sticky. Do you know whether these dishwashers use electromechanical relays, or solid state?
