I came to make the same comment. Seriously. What is with people and stupid synth music in these videos. It's louder than the guy talking. Fortunately, it's mostly a different frequency, but what's the point?

Sorry guys, I never intended for the music to be louder than my own voice. My intent was just to have a light background noise to help maintain attention. I thought I had turned the volume down enough during editing but I guess not! I appreciate the positive feedback. Thank you for watching.

I have to let you know, my GE dishwasher was not drying, I called a repairman, he looked at it, and thought it was the thermostat. He ordered the part, it took a week, he replaced it, no difference. He then told me it was the circuit board and those are too expensive to fix, so I might as well look at a new dishwasher. His trip to the house cost $70 dollars. And a new unit would have cost $600.00. (He did not charge me for the new thermostat) But instead, I bought the flood switch you recommended with the nut driver, and 25 minutes later my dishwasher is as good as new. I am not all that handy by the way. Thank you so much for this vid!!

Thank you for breaking down the most likely to the least likely problem. It saved me a lot of time and money putting in the wrong part. It only took me twenty minutes to replace the float switch from the time I grabbed my toolbox until I was putting it away. Much appreciated. My local family-owned appliance store had the part for me in two days for less than Amazon.

Break Fix Repair For less than $30 (Amazon) I was able to fix the flood switch. Woo hoo! I played the odds and ordered the part, as you said that this part is most often the problem. Unfortunately I dropped one of the screws to the seal and couldn’t find it. I went to Lowes and was told that it was a specialty screw and to call an appliance repair company and they could order it for me, which was what I was trying to avoid by watching your video and doing the work myself. After the salesman walked away, a man nearby suggested I drive two blocks to an local appliance dealership, they may have the screw I needed. I did, they did, and they did not even charge me for it. I returned home and had my dishwasher put back together in less than ten minutes and verified it was heating water and heat drying my dishes. I also found that my filter was completely covered in calcium and lime deposits. I soaked it in a vinegar/water mixture overnight then scrubbed it with a nylon brush. Thank you so much for saving me a $75 service call plus an additional parts and labor charge...especially right before Christmas. Thanks you.

Why is it the old dishwasher I had from 1993, replaced in 2016, always cleaned the dishes, always dried them and never had a problem. I only replaced it because the racks were rusting out. Now I buy a new $700 ge dishwasher in 2017 and the control circuit board has gone bad, it doesn’t dry, it doesn’t clean very well, and it doesn’t dry. I’ve done everything but refill the rinse aid. I never needed “rinse aid” in my old one. Never buying anything GE again
@n0bdy369
@n0bdy369 4 года назад
Thank you so much!! Love the videos!! Super informative and helpful without a whole lotta extra. However, I found a 5th issue to fix this same problem that I think might be helpful. My friend had her GE gdt545psj6ss "professionally" installed new a couple of years ago. She has never really had a dishwasher before and so she couldn't figure out why it kept getting moldy on the inside even though she ran it daily. I noticed after a fresh run that I felt no heat from it even though it was on "heat dry". I first checked the filter. EWWW! It was caked almost SOLID with black gunk. I cleaned that and ran it again. Still no heat. That’s when I went to the interwebs and found your video on the flood switch. Great info! But that wasn't her issue. I went back to your channel and found this video!!! I went straight to the store and got the rinse aid. Not the problem. Double checked the flood switch to make sure it wasn't gunked up. It's slightly different than the one in the video, but seemed functional. I don't have an ohms meter, but checked for damage to the element. So I pulled the washer out and immediately noticed the problem. THE POSITIVE TERMINAL FOR THE HEATING ELEMENT HAD NEVER BEEN PLUGGED IN!!! Hope you find this helpful :) (Only negative feedback I have, the music could be a little more background and the window has a lot of glare.)
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 4 года назад
All I can say is WOW. I can’t believe a new dishwasher didn’t have the heating element plugged up all the way. Those are typically pretty hard to remove since they should have nuts that screw up to secure the terminals. So glad you found my video (and the annoying glare that bothered me too) helpful! Appreciate the kind feedback. Hope to create more content like this to keep helping people out. Have a wonderful day!

Great video! I would like to add just one more common problem with these GE dishwashers, especially the newer ones that don’t use a flood switch. Be sure to check the heating element breaker, (thermal overload switch). It’s easily found with the unit pulled away from the wall and following the wires from the heating element to the 2 wire breaker, (the little black button is in between the 2 wires) usually mounted to the left of the heating element (looking at the back of the dishwasher). My dishwasher was not drying or getting that really hot steam it used to have and I found this breaker and it was tripped for whatever reason. Dishwasher has been working great for a couple months now.
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 4 месяца назад
Yes! I’ve went over the TCO in a few videos. The thing I’ve found is there’s typically a reason the TCO was tripped so I try to help people be aware that something caused it. A fluctuation in power, low water level, a break In the heating element etc typically causes it. Thanks for your comment!

Wish I had seen your video BEFORE I replaced the heating element. (but at least I know it's not that now). Dude! Mad props to you. I can confirm that "somehow" with the Rince Aid completely empty causes the unit not to send power to the heating element. I was chasing my tail having replaced the float switch and the thing still wasn't heating. The limit switch was fine. Element was fine. Then I remembered you said something about the Rinse Aid dispenser, which you even said you didn't quite understand why that would be a factor. Sure enough... it was in my case. Crazy! I bought this unit used for a rental property and found it was heating when i got it home. Ive never had a GE dishwasher, but in all my dishwashers (Kenmore and KitchenAid), I never used any sort of Rinse Aid. It's surprising that not using Rinse Aid can actually "break" GE dishwashers. That's so lame! I wonder if the user manual actually mentions that. Anyway... thank you for this video!

I’ve seen quite a few people completely disregard adding rinse aid as a potential fix. Almost as if it’s way too easy. My question is always, why not just give it a shot? Works for some people lol. Certainly glad your fix was as easy as just adding rinse aid. Appreciate the detailed comment! Thank you! Have a great day.

Break Fix Repair but is there actually some sort of sensor inside the rinse aid dispenser to detect if there’s rinse aid or not? And if there is... WHY WHY WHY would that act like a kill switch for the heating element? That’s just so weird to me. The thermistor switch makes sense. The limit switch makes sense. This rinse aid thing boggles me. If you ever find out, let me know.
@BreakFixRepair

dbbyleo to be honest I’m unsure as to why it happens. If I find out 100% sure I’ll let you know. Can you send me your dishwasher model so I can do some research?

Break Fix Repair GE model# GDF540HSF2SS. I cannot find anything in the web that links the dispenser as some sort of factor/switch for the heating element. Just boggles me! I’m almost convinced it’s pure coincidence. But how can it be!? Nothing worked until I tried what you said about the rinse aid dispenser!?!? I am almost tempted to take the dispenser out just to confirm if there is some sort of sensor/switch inside it! LOL.

Got up this morning... tested the dishwasher again just to be sure last night was not a fluke. And the initial test shows there was no power to the element again! But I let it run for about 30min... checked again... and saw 120v over the heating element. I think it’s my testing method. I assume that just because I set it to a Wash Temp of “Boost or Sanitize” means the heating element will kick in right away (to heat the water). But I realize that’s not probably how it works. It probably detects the temp of the water first and decides when to turn on the element. So when I test right in the beginning of the cycle, there may be no need for extra heat. And I think when I finally decided to test the rinse aid with some liquid, it WAS a coincidence that the controller then decided it needed more heat and it was then power was sent to the element... and it happens to be when I tested it, I then saw 120v going to the element. SOOO I think it is just coincidence. I don’t think there’s any correlation to the rinse aid dispenser (???) So but for sure before, no heat was happening even for the drying cycle. So what fixed it? Probably the replacement of the float switch, which I determined was on stuck in the closed position... the float wasn’t moving anymore (due to junk it seems) and continuity test shows it’s closed regardless if I tilt it upside down or not. But the thermistor was reading the correct ohms (9-10K). I’d love to know if you find out more. Anyway... this has been educational for sure. Thanks again for your awesome video.

I bought Model GDF630PSM4SS in September. It stopped draining after two weeks. The technician who was sent told me that the problem was that I bought GE Dishwasher in the first place. Not kidding! He told me he would buy a Bosch as all GE dishwashers are junk. It broke a week later and for the next 3 weeks I had to bail it out by hand, let it sit a day, and then it would work again for about 4-6 times. The 2nd technician ordered a part that did not need to be replaced, got it to work and then it failed again and would not drain. I had to buy a new dishwasher and the GE sits in my garage. GE told me they will not refund the money and would only replace it if the technician states in cannot be fixed. Stay away from GE.

Seems a lot of people have this same sentiment towards these dishwashers. I can say though that mine has been rock solid for the last 6 years, with the exception of replacing the flood switch once. I did replace the heating element but that wasn't the problem so MAYBE that might have went out afterwards, not sure! Across the channel I've heard of a few people that have had issues similar to yours where they're unable to get it fixed easily, repairmen that will almost ALWAYS install a new heating element first and not fix the problem. Overall just some issues that should be addressed. Thank you for your comment!

I have a GDF520PGJ5WW which stopped heating. I removed the dishwasher from the cabinet and checked the heating coil and the flood switch. On this model, the flood switch is underneath the unit. They both passed the Ohm test. Then I came across your video where you said lack of rinse aid could stop the unit from heating. As absurd as that sounds, I put everything back together and added rinse aid. It now works OK. Go figure.

Hi! I’m enjoying your videos. We have a GE GDT695 series. The flood switch is different in our machine. I pulled out the filter and the tower thing inside was seriously gunked up (and there was a small switch that would not come out) so I cleaned it out and the water is warmer, but not hot. (I’ve only run one cycle). I just filled the rinse aid to see if that helps. Will the float switch help in this case? Part #WD21X23498 should I just run more cycles? Thanks so much for your informative videos!

Great video. My dishwasher was running but noticed it wasn't cleaning properly and not very dry/hot. I assumed the heating element but was bad but came across your video and decided to give the flood switch a look. Before ordering the new part I took the current flood switch out and thoroughly cleaned it and now it works again! Thanks a lot and great tips along the way. One general question I have (previous prob) is that although the dishes come out clean, they often don't come out very dry. Is that just an issue with this machine (PDT750SSFASS)?
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 2 года назад
It shouldn’t be, the float switch may have been the cause of that. If you’re getting steam then the heating element is working. Check the vent opening too and make sure it’s not clogged.

Check resistant on your element is the surest way to know if your element is good or if it’s your float switch. Shut off breaker to dishwasher, disconnect incoming power to dishwasher, shut your water off going to dishwasher, take the two screws that mount your unit to your counter-which is usually up under the lip. Than disconnect your water inlet valve line and pull the dishwasher out. Take your meter and put it on the lowest setting on ohms and put each lead to the connection point where your element plugs into. If you see OL than your element is bad, if you get a reading than change the float switch. Hope this helps anyone

Glad this helped you! On my model there are plastic brackets that hold them up or down but to be honest they don’t seem to want to stay well either. However they did work when they were new lol the one side of mine closest to the top of the door is permanently fixed and the other set can move up and down. The rear set is the ones that seem to have weakened over the last few years. You may be able to replace the plastic bracket and that may fix it. What model dishwasher do you have?

Thanks! Great video. I have a new Amana dishwasher that is not drying my dishes. I'm going to try the rinse aid. I believe the heating element is working because the steam is hot. The dishes are hot but they are not dry but wet. I was wondering if it could be a problem with the vent. What do you think?
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 4 года назад
Janet Teehan thanks for your comment! It definitely could be an issue with the vent. Sometimes they get clogged up with debris. If there isn’t an escape path for the steam to exit then the dishes will more than likely stay wet! Let me know what you find! Thanks again!

Would a bad flood switch cause the element not to heat in the service mode? I can run all the other functions except turning the element on. I checked the element and thought it was fine, but wife wanted to replace it anyway. I found a forum where i was told i can check the resistance of 2 pins on the flood switch. At about 69 deg, it reads 0.943k ohms. Waiting to hear back what he thinks about that. One question for you, how long does your rinse aid last? I fell like I'm filling it up every couple of days.

Very helpful video. Thanks. Would the float or heating element alone cause the dishwasher to run for hours and hours and never get hot? My issues started with the cycle getting longer and longer but seemed clean and hot. Finally, it ran for 9 hours and kept sounding a loud humming but never finished the cycle or was hot inside, though it had rinsed some. Does this sound like a bigger control board issue? Thanks!

Unfortunately it does sound like it’s the control board just looking at the symptoms. 9 hours is a long time especially to not finish the whole cycle!

I’d their suppose to be a little water around the float switch when working properly?
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 4 года назад
There will almost always be water around the float switch, regardless of if it’s working properly or not. Since the base sits below the inlet to the pump, water will always be there unless the dishwasher has not been used in a while and the water has dried up. Hope this helps. Is your dishwasher not heating? If so I would say 9/10 times the issue is the flood switch on a GE dishwasher. The link to that part is in the description, just verify it fits your dishwasher!

Thank you so much for your video. I ordered this part and replaced it, now it’s showing a “Leak detected “ message. Do you know what went wrong and how to fix it?! I really appreciate your help
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 4 года назад
So let's try this first, turn the breaker off to the dishwasher for about 5 minutes and turn it back on. Sometimes a good reset will clear that error. If that doesn't work, take the flood switch back out and let's just make sure it's seated in there good and the screws are tight. Let's also make sure there's no visible water dripping on the floor below, if you can. You may need a pretty bright flashlight to see through that hole so I would recommend something like this: amzn.to/2UGWez3 If you don't have a good flashlight. You may also be able to stick some paper towels in the hole or take the front cover off to see for sure. Let's just make sure you don't have a leak as a leak would be very bad!! Let me know what you find and I hope this helps!

Very helpful video you made, I just have a question: I don't want to pull the entire dishwasher if it is not necessary, so I pulled my float switch, cleaned up and checked with the multimeter. Initially showed 0,89 or around that number and I was very kind of happy that float switch was the issue, but after shaking it well and getting it cleaned with grease remover now it is reading around 13,5. I tested (acting as if it is in the dishwasher being exposed to the water temperature) by inserting into hot water numbers started dropping and putted into refrigerator to see if number comes back up so it did. Do you think or others who has some knowledge about it my rigorous cleaning did the job or initial reading (0.89) was incorrect and float switch is fine and need to check heating element? So making it short can dirt build up cause for it to malfunction? Thank you in advance to any response.
@BreakFixRepair
@BreakFixRepair 2 месяца назад
Well I think my initial response is what’s wrong? Is the dishwasher not heating? I’d check the TCO first and I have covered that in a few other videos since this one.

Tou forgot the cheapest item that can cause the problem The TCO Thermal cut off switch. It should have continuity. If not, there is a reset on back of switch. If you read "Open" with Ohm meter, the part is bad, and element would never heat up. Most, not all models have a TCO. Location is in the explodeded diagram of your dishwasher. Hope this adds to your very good video.

My ge dishwasher model GDF530PGM0WW has a slightly different flood switch. Its called a flood stem on this model. Does it get removed and installed in a similar manner ? I already replaced the heating element which did not fix the issue of the dishes not drying so I am going to try and replace the flood stem when it comes in. What do you think ?

My guess is that the flood stem replacement won’t fix the problem. I’m not sure on those newer models as the flood switch is located in a different area. It could be that though!
