I love how from RE2 to RE4 he goes from an apprehensive, scared cop who gets jumpy at everything to an overly confident, unphased cool action guy who makes jokes
In the original Re2 and even the darkside chronicles retelling of re2 he was pretty level headed and wasn’t really jumpy or scared at all, they made him more like that in the remake. In darkside during the events of re2 he’s always cracking jokes too
It's not necessarily as "high-concept" or as filled with jargon as MGS. The DMC comparison kinda fits, but combine that with something like "Big Trouble in Little China".
@@manuelmateo3392 the radio dialogue is straight from MGS though, although yeah its lacking the jargon high concept stuff, but some stuff are actually direct references to MGS, like Sadler said something about swatting down a bothersome fly, or Leon saying "there's an intruder beside me?"
The most embarrassing thing about all this is that when I played this as a 12 year old I thought this dialogue was soooooo cool. I had never played a capital M M-rated game before, and the game was so intense and effective with everything else it gave me the illusion that the dialogue was up there with them. As an adult I think the writing was intentional, and I really appreciate it for what is now.
This game is so fucking weird in hindsight. It was easily one of the most horrifying things I'd experienced at the time, the chainsaw dude with the sack for a mask gave me nightmares for a good couple years when I played it. Now it's so cheesy, it's more of a goofy action game and I just laughed my whole way through it playing it now.
The puns are hilarious "I was a bit tied up" "Why don't you do us all a favor and leave before the audience gets pissed off" "a senior moment perhaps?". They should make a movie in which Leon just spends a vacation in which he tries to awkwardly flirt with women and spamming out one-liners. I'd watch that in cinema's.
The plot would be that Leon is taking a vacation after everything happened and he got to hook up with ada as normal people, but Chris tries to ruin it so that the bloodline continues.
"Where's everyone going, bingo?" "Your right hand comes off?" "Faith and money will lead you nowhere, Saddler." "Rain or shine, you're going down." "Better try a new trick cos that one's getting old." The list of cheesy lines go on. This is what made RE4 so fun and replayable!
I have zero issue with RE4's dialogue, particularly Leon's. The game didn't take itself too seriously like RE5, and the comedy wasn't try hard and cliche like it was in RE6. It was so bad that it was _good,_ and it was so cheesy that gave RE4 tremedous charm that not a single game after it has replicated it since (and it may be because of Mikami himself, he's known to be pretty quirky). It gave the game some personality, where while it was pretty scary (in my opinion), you're gleefully wondering just what the heck will come out of Leon's mouth next. His interactions with Salazar had the most humor in the whole experience, and it was a pleasure. And Leon reminds me of DMC3 Dante (the best Dante). They're both very confidant (in Dante's case, he's way more playful), they're both badass, and they both have some very cheesy humor. In Leon's case, nobody says "Where's everyone going? Bingo?", but he takes it, owns it. That cheesiness is a part of his character, and makes him substantially less boring and dull (unlike Jake, who is too try hard, cocky, edgy, and dick-ish for that kind of humor to work with him). They've toned that part of him down a lot recently, bit it's still there, and should always be there, just like his iconic boy band hair.
I absolutely agree. I think they're going to butcher the remake because 4 is different than all of the RE games when it comes to dialogue, character and atmosphere.
@@bombthing Don't know mate, in fact Saddler actually have hidden equipment to remove the plagas kinda make me think Saddler actually have unknown history behind him.
aw, no "mr. kennedy, you entretain me!". loved the old jolly saddler, despite being a leader of a horrible cult he seems like a nice guy to have around.
God, I can't believe some miserable people out there actually dislike this dialogue. The fact that Leon's so painfully corny and spouts out so many B-movie lines is something to enjoy! Resident Evil's always been just as iconic for is hammy lines and B-movie charm as it is it's survival horror gameplay. Honestly, Leon and his corniness is one of the biggest reasons why Resident Evil 4's always gonna be one of my favorite games ever. If it didn't have it's plot, it'd have some great gameplay and solid atmosphere, but the cheesy yet charming narrative was what kept me captivated in RE4 the entire way through. This is easily my favorite incarnation of Leon, one I wish was still present in RE6 and any other RE games except 2, and his personality is what makes me watch every cutscene of 4 again every playthrough.
It’s even more bizarre and that two games ago Leon is just some everyday unskilled ordinary guy, Some average cop who got caught in a middle of a break out.... SUDDENLY! In resident evil 4 he somehow obtain ninja skills and badass fighting moves and shoots like a sly cowboy.... the change was SO random as if it’s like Gordon Freeman in Half life 1 SUDDENLY become some Assassin or martial arts master, or a samurai with a PHD, samurai physicist in the sequel. Except with no sword... but a crowbar. Yeah Leon changed THAT much
Still comes across as Pulitzer Prize literature level dialogue compared to the utterly alien and bizarre dialogue in the original Resident Evil made 8 years before RE4.
Never noticed until I watched some of the cutscenes again of the OG, but at 2:58 Salazar and Leon have a very similar conversation in the remake during his boss fight. I forgot they said all that during the original.
I get it's trying to do it's own thing. But Resident Evil was always a cheesy series. In the recent one, you got an 8 foot big boob vampire lady. And you want me to take it too seriously
In my headcanon, this is Leon's way to treat his trauma on Raccoon City... Being cheesy. Just like Michael from GTAV where the only way to treat his mid-life crisis is his sarcasm.
Of course it will be changed. The remake wont be a 1-1 remake, Capcom is very ambitious with their remakes. Whatever changes the remake brings, people will lose their shit lol.
There is a difference between Resident Evil 1's acting and dialog vs Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 1 was not meant to be cheesy or at least as cheesy as it turned out to be. It was simply a product of its time. The actors sounded like they were just reading off of a script and didn't seem to have a clue what the hell was going on. With RE4, the script was deliberately written the way it was. While you can be invested in Resident Evil's story, even Shinji Mikami understood how ridiculous and over the top the games could get and they were just being somewhat self-aware. After Shinji Mikami left, it seemed like the people who took over the series didn't understand 4 very well which is why the series lost some of its charm. Resident Evil 5 had Albert Wesker more or less turn into a James Bond-esq super villain and we have muscleman Chris Redfield punching boulders, but they expected you to take everything seriously. Then in Resident Evil 6, Leon completely changed and had none of his witty dialogue from 4. One thing I do like is when playing Resident Evil 2 remake first and then going back to 4 because you get to see clear evolution of Leon's character. He starts out as a rookie cop who feels a little overwhelmed yet determined and isn't entirely confident in his own abilities yet. Resident Evil 4 shows us someone who has undergone training and has not only gained skills but is confident to the point where he can be comfortable in what should be extremely uncomfortable situations which is why he could be a total smartass in even the most serious situations.
Jon-Erich, it can also be said that all the cheesy one liners can be seen as a nervous to tick to make light of a serious situation where life and death is involved. You know, using humor as a defense mechanism.
@@beatlecristian I think because of the way they developed Leon's personality over the years, that probably is correct. I also think that is why he fits perfectly as the protagonist for Resident Evil 4. Using Chris Redfield would have been a mistake because Chris reacts to people and situations differently.
The story, writing, dialogue, voice acting in this game is everything i love about story, writing, dialogue, voice acting THIS GAME IS THE BESTTT GOOOOOOOD
You forgot the part where Ada offers Leon a boat ride and he then says okay in a weird tone of voice. I don't know how to describe it but it cracks me the fuck up.
One of my personal favorite lines of dialogue that wasn't in the compilation was during the encounter with Krauser, when he said, "Like you, I'm American."
