@@scurreith3667it wasn’t sensitivity. For one Leon never said anything remotely insensitive or crude. This is middle school humor at best. they were just trying to take the story seriously. People these days are not as receptive to campy humor. This game came out in 2005. The same year Batman Begins would come out and forever change audience expectations. RE4 is Batman Returns. RE4 Remake is the Dark Knight. Camp died in 2005. Spiderman 2 came out in 2004 and it was campy as hell yet still considered an instant classic. Spiderman 3 would release in 2007 and be treated as a joke by audiences. Because Nolan proved that adults could enjoy stories about ridiculous concepts like super hero’s without any lampshading or winking at the audience. He took the Batman franchise 100% seriously as cinema. Something that had previously never been done in that way.
@@scurreith3667Leon hardly says anything sensitive in the OG Pretty sure the RE4R team was just trying to take the story seriously... which imo blew in their face. I personally miss the campiness of the OG.
his personality in a nutshell 2:38 Leon: *sees cool chair, sits, strikes cool pose probably knowing there's a camera* also Leon: "there's no time to rest"
The best part is that his enemies laugh at his jokes, like, they wanna kill him, but they still find him to be really funny, specially Saddler, maybe that's why he never used his plaga control powers to just straight up kill Leon (when he tried at the end of the game it was too late).
@@foxtrapandendo7541 IT WAS IN RE4 IT WAS IN THE ISLAND SEGMENT IN THE ROOM WITH THE JUMPSCARE FIRE ZOMBIE😭😭😭😭😭 it's the dialogue you get from inspecting the meat on the hooks in that room
When i played RE4 for the first time, i didnt understand a word of english, i just played along doing trial and error. I always thought about how leon was going around saying the coolest, deepest and most 90s action movie kinds of phrases. Only to become fluent in english and realise he was just pseudo-shitposting all along lmao. In Ada's scene i used to think he was all like "i have to be quick!" or "Damn it!", turns out all he said was "damn she actually pressed it"
_"A bit of advice, try using knives next time. Works better for close encounters."_ *(Takes Ada's handgun, slides the magazine out, and throws it away)*
@@pointblank2890 I feel like it's a "shocked Pikachu" type of reaction. Like how could he expect anything less? Two things you can also count on ada for. 1) she will absolutely betray you. 2) she'll at least TRY to make sure you don't die in the process, no guarantees though
@@MrShadow1995. ohhhhh true, it's pretty similar and gives off the same vibes. I love both the MGS and resident evil franchise so it's pretty cool to see similarities drawn between the two.
Sadler being straight up with leon and having fun throwing shade at each other is so good. Shame he became more of a fanatic in the remake and just talks crazy cult nonsense
Yeah I missed this Saddler. In the remake he only talks to you a few times and most of that is through visions or when he's talking to all the plagas. Never said anything interesting though, just stuff like capture Leon get the girl. Pretty cool but I love the old version more
One of the lines that really made me laugh in RE4 was in Chapter 4 when Salazar was going to conduct the ritual, and Leon says in the most passionately American way, "This is no ritual. It's TERRORISM!"
I think the actual dumbest line from Leon is in the original RE2. He meets Ada Wong, an armed, super competent "civilian" purposefully wandering through a police station with unclear objectives, who runs off at a moments notice and is constantly evasive about what she's doing. A few hours later, Annette Birkin reveals Ada is a spy for Umbrella. Leon's response: "Ada wouldn't do something like that! I KNOW her!" Bruh.
Honestly the remakes were fun enough but they - along with REVII and VIII - are part of the series' endless downward spiral into generic soullessness. I wish they'd tried to retain the gameplay styles of the originals rather than going for an insipid one-size-fits-all approach. The lack of classic characters - or classic characters portrayed in a distinctly uninteresting "realistic" manner - is one of the most glaring issues, but it's the atmosphere and overall visual style too. There's just something so unmemorable and bland about the new games.
I find it absolutely hysterical that the weird stuff he says sounds so confident and is fairly explainable in context, but undeniably it still is, in fact, "dumb shit" 😂
I've never played these games, but I believe the reason people love this character is because he's just unapologetically himself. It's silly, but the game's devotion to pull off those cheeky jokes as deadass as possible is what gives it its charm, which is also why these days movies with self aware humour about tropes seem to miss the mark. You can fall in love with ANY silly narrative if the creator fully commits to the characters/story they're presenting. Never be afraid to be cheesy, because there are so many people out there who LOVE the cheese
It's also a time capsule of one of the greatest eras in video games: 2000's Capcom. Resident Evil 4's production is how Devil May Cry happened - makes a lot of sense, considering the buffet of dopey one-liners between Leon and Dante. And then there's Viewtiful Joe and Godhand - the 2000's was Capcom's greatest era of action movie-style cheese. And since the games are also really fun, it makes them oddly timeless and loved.
Believe it or not, people still think Leon is overrated. RE6 was bad but Leon had the best campaign. Even in CGI movies, it was enjoyable to watch because of him.
@@connor48880 they changed it to "who the hell are you ?", then Ramon Salazar asked Leon to give up Ashley and Leon said "Yeah, Fat chance Ramon, the girl just fine with me". while Ashley showed a wholesome smirk when Leon said "the girl just fine" . Although if you defeat Salazar you will get Achievement called "No Thanks, Bro!"
I really like how they incorporated bits of the villain's comm calls into other parts of the game in the remake. Especially how Ramon and Leon's banter about scripts, acting, and drama being instead placed dynamically into Ramon's boss fight. It works perfectly.
2:38 I just love how Leon says "Your right hand comes off???" completely genuinely, like he's actually questioning if Salazar can detach his right hand and use it to get Leon or smth
I'm glad they kept a few of these lines but I really miss the goofy parts of this game in the remake. I feel like being campy is part of what makes a lot of old games like this so great.
"I’m sure you boys didn’t just tag along so we can sing kumbaya at some boy scout bonfire, but then yet again maybe you did." THE AUDACITY OF THIS SIGMA MALE
Leon is my favorite RE character but honestly I think the title of sigma male goes to Chris. Leon has his moments with Ada while Chris is all about the mission.
“Your right hand comes off?” That’s the only line in this that I hadn’t heard and the only one of Leon’s one liners that have actually ever made me laugh
The thing that made RE4 Leon so great is that he was charismatic. He's just the right combination of goofy and cool to feel like it's just uniquely his personality. He's not actively _trying_ to put on a character; he just acts as he sees fit, almost nonchalantly, which comes off as simultaneously dorky, but also badass at the same time. He's "effortlessly cool" in a sense; he's got a lot of bluster, but he backs it up with competency and has a bit of fun while he's at it. It makes him a bit weird, but... isn't that kinda what everyone is? A little weird sometimes? He's a doofus, but he's also a badass. That's what makes him _genuinely_ cool - he has a multifaceted, endearing personality, with charming humour backed up by ass-kicking capability. That's what really makes someone cool; pure charisma.
Because men are valued primarly by their competence, appearance and social hierarchy position. personality comes below those cathegories (whereas women are valued by their appearance and personality - and by personality its usually agreeable-ness, humour and positivity. Those aspects are also interchangeable i.e. a super hot girl can get away with being less pleasant and agreeable - with it labelled as being 'confidence', while a more average looking girl will more often come across as arrogant, stuck up, "a bitch" and so on). Leon happens to score quite high in those three cathegories so he can have whatever personality the writers decide to put into him that people are gonna praise it.
It took me all these years to understand the “sandwiched” reference. And the fact that he prefaces it with “I hate to say it.” Because it’s the OG resident evil bad joke and he didn’t want to invoke cringe. It’s actually brilliant
I am gonna miss this Leon, the new maybe more believable, but it's not the same without the quirky lines and him possibly actually having fun during the game. Edit: Turne out Leon is still his old quirky self, thank god.
@@rawmaw I mean, the script is the same, but as much as I'd like to say I love it, I think the VA just doesn't do that good of a job delivering the funny lines. He fits Leon perfectly most of the time, but his cheesy one-liners just don't sound the same. It's not as funny if you don't try to sound overly cool while saying them LMAO.
@@sasha_vb I'm sorry to hear you experience with the game so far. Luckily, I disagree. I'll admit that I do prefer the VA, but the new guy is a dandy replacement. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the rest of what the game has to offer :)
