this game is like watching someone with ADHD or whatever get their random dose of energy and inspiration to become hyper-fixated on a project, but it takes too long and the logistics weren't in their favor so it has random levels of quality in places. what a ride. loved the video, always excited for more
Fun fact: There is a glitch in the game where if you die while fighting the B.O.W. in the boiler room as Leon and load from that save point, all the ammo in that room and the room above it respawn. Essentially, you can keep dying and farm Grenade and Rocket Launcher Ammo that will carry you to the end of the game.

If there was a hack of the game with quality of life improvements such as environmental item graphics, and text to hint at some of the doors/environments, and more ammunition drop, then the game would be quite amazing actually. The rational for the faster aiming slide with more powerful weapons has to do more with recoil, so I can understand what they were "aiming" for with that mechanic.
No lie, your complaints were what I found to be atmospheric. I played this on the gameboy in the early 2000s and figured it all out without a guide. The music ramp up and graphical slow down I always felt was like the slowmo scenes in scary movies. The music pauses for monster moans really added the scare effect when I played late at night when I was suppose to be asleep. Finding the keys and areas to go next was part of playing this on a gameboy bro. You really had to have played the game when it came out, because it aged with the times of its OG players.

So you see Leon on the sinking ship, and you think "he's totally gonna get outta this one", and he's obviously gonna come back for the climax, but no, he just fuckin' died. So Barry just got Leon killed with his "brilliant" triple cross. Also, with Barry standing next to Lucia, I would think the men on the submarine being expert, trained, military could shoot him and not her.

I guess the B.O.W human form thing can be explained by Leon telling the organization about Mr. X and G-Birkin mutations, and them assuming other B.O.W can go through the same.
I mean if this game was canon it would explain all of Leon’s smooth kick arse moves he did and his B-movie one liners in (original) RE4… it was the BOW trying to learn human behaviour… Maybe fake Leon turned good after getting back with Barry in this game for random reasons 😂
Great review, man! I personally think the game is underrated. One thing you get wrong about essential items you need to progress, is that the game will notify you if the room you enter contain the item need to progress. Look at 12:09, and you see that the game tells you the zombie has the item. There is no need to look through every pixel😅
Oh yeah I’m aware of that. If you are familiar with this game, my problem was that this zombie was on a split path. I took the southern way and explored everything except that northern hallway back at the beginning, so I never even saw that notification until I circled back
Duuuuuuude When I typed "Resident Evil retrospective" this is EXACTLY the sort of content I was looking for! I breezed threw this entire series in one day! Any plans on some more Resi content in future? Would be a shame if this was the end 😔
I remember always seeing this game at K Mart during the holidays. I never picked it up because I was always a little bit intimidated by it, and the price never dropped under $30, but I was always curious regardless.
Believe it or not, Gaiden is worse to play on original hardware. I know, because I bought this game in 2002 new. The Game Boy Color doesn't have a backlit screen, and this game is mostly made up of dark colors. Thus it's nearly impossible to see what's happening, unless you are in an adequately lit room and holding the GBC at a specific angle. This makes it even more of a nightmare to search for items, like you were talking about. I am amazed I had the patience two decades ago to actually finish this game, but I guess it was because of the sunk cost fallacy. Anyway...trust me, if you want to play this game, go the emulator route so you've got a backlit screen. It makes a world of difference.
When there’s enemies I don’t think it’s lag. It’s literally to slow you down making it harder to get away from them. If not you’d just run past everyone. Also enemies don’t respawn until key points in the game. U can literally back track and get almost all the items without enemies being there once killed. You definitely need a guide though or have replayed it to know where things go.
You know, this game sounds like a really interesting idea but the idea was just too much for the GameBoy Color and didn't have the TLC it needed. Which is a shame, because this was released at the end of 2001. The GBA was already out. Take this concept, transport it to the GBA and iron out those little niggles like items being invisible until you walk over it and it could actually be a good game.
Honestly, I would give the game a 6/10 myself. Its story is below-average, but I enjoyed the gameplay and atmosphere of it. Remembering playing this on the gameboy color too was a wild wide for sure.
Ah Resident Evil Gaiden, my very first experience with the Resident Evil franchise back then unfortunately lol. I remember getting this game from my dad as a gift, while i don't remember much of it since i only beat it once as a kid i can say i can only remember how bad it was, but in a "it's so laughably bad that it's good" kind of bad. Despite that i had my fun with it, although certaintly the story was nothing to write home about the thing i remember fondly is the music. For a Gameboy Color game, it was kinda decent all things considered
holy crap i didnt realized this was witchtaunter until halfway in, anyways, i loved this game but because the game doesnt tell you where items are i missed the rocket launcher, gas gun, and a grenade launcher completely softlocking myself in the end with the final BOW fight EDIT: I ALSO COMPLETELY MISSED THE SURGERY INFORMATION BECAUSE THE GAME IS FUCKED UP AND BECAUSE I PRESSED ONE BUTTON IT SKIPPED THE ENTIRE THING
When I watch these reviews, I’m somewhat glad that WitchTaunter didn’t become a school teacher or something. Otherwise, there would’ve been an uptick of students game-ending themselves in some local high school or university.
I started it many times in an emulator and even got a cartridge from ebay in 2012 because it was one of the "must have" gbc games, if you want to collect.. never could pass the first half hour or so, the shooting, bad music, slow pace, and playing with Barry really put me off... that is no Resident Evil game at all...
