Resident Evil REMAKES: Just As Good As I (Don't) Remember Them

For many years now, The Resident Evil series has been a franchise that I had wanted to dive into, but I really felt like I was too late to the game. I’ve heard so many great things about the games, but it also felt like if I played them now, they might not live up to the hype. They’re a little outdated controls and graphics-wise, and since I don’t have any nostalgia for them, they might not gain the same special place in my heart that so many other people have for them.

I'd say play as many games in the main series as you can. This is the main series so far: 1. Resident Evil (1996) 2. Resident Evil 2 (1998) 3. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) 4. Resident Evil - Code: Veronica (2000) 5. Resident Evil Remake (2002) 6. Resident Evil Zero (2002) 7. Resident Evil 4 (2005) 8. Resident Evil 5 (2009) 9. Resident Evil: Revelations (2012) 10. Resident Evil 6 (2012) 11. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2015) 12. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) 13. Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019) 14. Resident Evil 3 Remake (2020) 15. The 2002 Resident Evil remake is not only the best of the franchise in my opinion but tied with Silent Hill 2 as the single greatest survival horror video game ever made. As such, I would absolutely recommend going back and playing it, along with the PS1 trilogy, Code Veronica, Zero, etc. Resident Evil is my favorite video game franchise of all time, old and new games alike, so it's always exciting when people first start getting into it.

Leon, Jill, and Ethan have my heart. RE is so awesome to me, no game series has ever felt the same. RE4 is the game that I watched my mom play and that got me into the series when I was little. I've been trying to go back and play them all myself ever since. I was super sad that my mom didn't live to see the RE4 Remake and that I couldn't share that experience with her, she would've loved it. I'm really hoping for more remakes, too, like the original RE, Revelations, and RE5, I really like the over the shoulder gameplay more than the fixed camera angles.
@arwen08
@arwen08 Год назад
leon and jill yea, but idk about ethan, he just didnt feel important to me or like he really did much. he was just some average guy looking for his wife and child, ig thats why people like him but everyone else is cool because they're linked to military and go on all these missions. like leon is a secret agent and a cop, hes completely selfless willing to risk his life for a single person who he's never even met, hes got a sense of humor and a personality, and comparing that to ethan it really feels like they missed out on making him a more memorable character. i mean, im not saying we needed another military member as a main character, but they could have given him some sort of a personality, instead he was just a mold man who got killed off within 2 games

@@arwen08 He's easier to relate to compared to the others. His character is more grounded and being more like a normal person, it allows you to feel the same blindside that he does. I got attached to Ethan a lot more than the others, too, because of this choice. Most people can't relate to being a demon slaying super cop, but plenty can relate to just trying to survive or saving their family. He was a really good husband and an even better father, selfless to the end. The military overpowered characters tend to get boring, Chris is the number one example of this for me. Changing it up was a really good choice for the series after the RE5 and 6.

@@arwen08 The only OG I'm really missing is Jill, after RE3R, I want to see her more. The rest need a break, though, Chris and Leon especially. We just got RE4R, and RE2R not that long ago, and Chris is just overused imo, he was awful in Village. I know they're done with Ethan's story, but I definitely want to see where they take the series next, seeing as Rose is the apex (for lack of a better word) of the series and they tied all the lore together pretty nicely in Village. Another new character and perspective would be really nice, for sure.

Resident Evil is such a great franchise. The lore and timeline make absolutely no sense but the games, at least 1-4 and 7 & 8, are fantastic. You can honestly play 7 and 8 without playing 5 and 6 and still understand everything. 5 and 6 aren’t necessarily bad they’re just much different in terms of their gameplay and style. Pumped you’re getting into it and to see more RE content from you. Edit: hopefully they’ll do a proper remaster of the first game at some point equivalent to the recent remasters of 2-4. During the RE2 section, Thrifty Typewriter jokingly said that there were two Mr X’s to fix the weird timeline. However, he may actually be correct. In the original RE2 there were multiple Mr Xs, with one being sent to the R.P.D (the one you see in game) and the others being sent to kill other people. In the more realistic remake universe, there could be two Mr Xs, which is why one was killed by William Birkin and the other killed by Leon.

Man, just because the older titles are outdated doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to give them a chance. Take this from a late fan who started following the series starting with RE5 & 6. When it came to the original games, I first tried CODE: Veronica. It was hard as hell, but I still managed to beat it. Then I played Resident Evil 1 Remake and 0 and got used to those as well before hopping into the original Resident Evil. That was harder compared to the remake, but still I beat it. The only ones that I haven’t beaten are the original RE2 & 3. I’m not giving up on those though. I personally think you should try the original games out, but if you can’t I get it. Fixed cameras and tank controls aren’t for everyone. But I still highly recommend RE1 Remake for a next video. It’s the best RE game in the series. Nothing against RE4, but it’s more action horror than survival horror. 🙂

Great video, nice to hear a fresh perspective on these games. If you want a suggestion on what to play next i suggest trying RE 7 and RE village as a duo and its story DLCs for something more in line with the remakes style. RE 5 and RE 6 are so different in tone you might get whiplash but i still recommend them for the goofy RE moments and memes. RE 1 2002 is amazing but incredibly dated. If you have patience for a hood classic though its nice to pay tribute to the grandaddy of the survival horror genre

That’s awesome! Have you ever played the evil within? IMO it has a similar heart pounding feel and a similar amount of action (or inaction depending on playstyle). RE7 was pretty scary too but RE8 didn’t do it for me. But it takes a lot to scare me in media however being unnerved is much better than jump scares. I like long drawn out moments like walking down a hallway, the music starts to ramp up ever so slightly so you know something’s coming but you don’t know what. Or when. Headphones and a dark room are a must! Oh and the evil within a sequel is alright but doesn’t get me like the first one got me at all. Been trying to play Outlast since it’s supposedly the “scariest game of all time” but I find evil within to be much scarier and more interesting to play.

I can't believe one of my favorite channels is playing Resident Evil. My favorite Franchise of all time... This is god tier bro. If I recommend something, don't play RE7 just yet. You might be really confused. I'll start with the originals (the ps1 games) and then RE1 remake but after playing the originals. There are short and easy games to dive into overall. The original games are still really good and even tho the gameplay isn't great as the modern, is still easy to play and understand. And don't worry, they are really different but also very similar to the remakes that they don't feel lame or lackluster. They feel equally fun in their own way. The originals were pioneers in the gaming industry, no joking. And then after that, you could try RE4 original, tho this one i think you'll really feel a bit overwhelmed. It's still one of the greastest games of all time but the remake is an improvement on almost everyway, so you might feel it a bit less good. But remember the OG one came out in 2005, having a game with this type of gameplay was revolutionary at the time. THEY ARE WORTH CHECKING OUT!

You need to play the remake to Resident Evil 1. It's not as modern as the other remakes but its truly a masterpiece and way ahead of its time. It will allow you to feel how the original games felt while still being modern enough and well directed enough to help it flow with the other remakes.

Re6 is over the top and appropriately unique in the franchise. I recommend an open mind when playing that game because at the end of the day, it is special and does things few mainstream third person shooter even dare to do. Re6 and Re5 represent the action coop era of Re that show promise and offer the value they offer.

I recommend playing the OG version of RE2 for the following reasons: 1. A & B scenarios are more fleshed out and there's more reason to play em in OG over the Remake. There's story differences between A & B, and you fight mostly different bosses between the two scenarios. 2. Zapping system, get item here it may not be in other character's B Scenario. Kill a certain boss, it won't appear the other character's B Scenario as examples.

Its interesting to see someones perspective playi g the new games and not the original/better versions. Original re2 has a way better story A/B than the remakes, its only in re2r because og 2 had it. The A/B scenarios are way different in it. 3 remake was heavily cut back compaired to the original 3, lacking locations, and also plot points/actions. Re4 is phenomenal, its genuinely amazing, and re4r is also really good, i highly suggest the pc version with the re4hd mod that capcom even let greenlight

My first experience with RE was watching my husband play the old versions on my PS3. I instantly fell in love with the lore, the settings, and the characters. It’s so campy, I just love all the dialogue. 😂 However, I never could play them myself because I could not put up with the slowness and inverted controls. So when these remakes came out, I was more than happy to take the reins and play the series myself. I was so relieved they kept the difficulty and the lack of handholding of the originals. You get to experience the atmosphere so much better when there are no stupid icons all over your screen telling you where to go and what to do. Leon Kennedy is one of my favorite video game protagonists of all time now.

Having marathoned them all a few years ago, I would absolutely reccomend jumping to VII and VIII from here especially as VII has been upgraded to current gen, so is a natural jumping point from here (especially as it doesn't really require prior knowledge of the plot up to that point) Of course for a complete change of gameplay, could be worth checking our the RE1MAKE in between as many also hold that as the best despite it's age. After seeing how much you loved 2 & 4 I'm so excited to see your thoughts on 7. In many ways it saved the franchise.

I love this franchise, and I liked your video, like all fans of something, I always enjoy when there are new people enjoying what I like, so this video was very entertaining Seeing the opinions of a non-fan is always good, having those first reactions reminds one of their first time. As a comment on your opinion with the Remake of 2, the truth is that the remake despite its improvements with the gameplay did not do a good job with the personalities of the characters and the story, as you say, many things are repeated and it is quite confusing while in the original game the campaigns had more variations and onnection with each other, even more cinematics with Leon and Claire meeting or talking on the radio occasionally! so in my opinion about what you should do with the franchise, it would be to visit the old games and have a clearer idea of the franchise, its origins, the charisma of the old games and what it is like who became what they are now of course, as long as you have patience with the graphics and controls of the games that have already aged... and their difficulty, they may be more difficult than you think all while we wait for more Remakes!

The early 2000s RE1 Remake is a must-play. Now that it's been remastered a couple of times and brought up to modern console specs, it doesn't feel like an old game. It's also a great way to get further acquainted with the lore as you see the roots for the franchise, and you get to learn more about Wesker (who'se a bigger player in RE:CV and 5) in the process.

I also only got into the franchise in January this year. I started with RE7 but actually stopped playing it twice before finally sitting down and finishing it (after finishing RE2R). RE7 was so scary for me I think it’s genuinely inoculated me to a lot of horror now. But it was also RE2R that was my true gateway in and what made me fall in love with the franchise. I’d also strongly recommend playing 7 & 8 next, and then go back to the beginning. RE1 Remake is a masterpiece but I had so much trouble getting more than an hour into it bc I was just confused and alienated by the fixed camera, tank controls and confusing environment. Then I played the original RE2 on PC using the Sourcenext PC ports and REBirth patches. And speaking as someone with zero nostalgia for the originals, I enjoyed it every bit as much as the remake. Just one of the most engaging things I’ve ever played, it was a game changer. And my familiarity with the RPD as a setting is what finally enabled me to get comfortable with the tank controls and finally go and play RE1. People are genuinely not just huffing nostalgia about the originals, they’re masterpieces that have aged INCREDIBLY well.

I did the same thing. Played RE4 remake and HAD to play RE2R &RE3R immediately back to back. But boy let me tell you, you HAVE to play 7 & 8 now!! It will really solidify your love for the franchise. I am forever a fan. 5 and 6 and the revelations were a straight up waste of money for me but I still love this franchise. I really enjoyed 7 and Village was so fun for me that I actually platinummed it (usually never go for those) and I'm on my 7th playthrough. I'm mind blown that you made such a great video and don't know where to go now bro 7 and 8 are waiting for you like presents under a Christmas tree! What I wouldn't give to play those two for the first time again😢 Alan Wake 2 just didn't fill that RE void for me whatsoever.
