The REmake is still drop dead gorgeous to this day, it's hard to believe it's almost 20 years old. It makes me wish more modern titles would indulge in prerendered backgrounds. Whether it's the REmake or the original, I am very happy that Capcom has been so proactive about keeping a version of this game in circulation. It's even on the PlayStation Classic! Happy Halloween, dood!
Christmas ‘96 I got a PS with two games: Jet Moto and Resident Evil. I thought RE was gonna be a run and gun action game. I was pleasantly surprised that it was something different. To this day, the first RE (including REmake) is in my top five games of all time.
I remember playing RE remake & Eternal Darkness back in 2002 when I was 6 years old behind my parents back as for obvious reasons I wasn't allowed to play horror games. At the time I didn't even know RE remake was a remake at all. I got curious in the middle of the night. Both of these games got me so scared I was in tears. The blood, the monsters, the high difficulty & the horror elements were too much for my 6 year old self to handle. I would promise myself I would never play those games even to the point of avoiding RE4 on the GC. Then in 2011 I found copies of RE3 Nemesis, Code Veronica X and a players choice copy of RE4 all on the GC cib for less than $10.00 Cib. I bought all 3. I finally played these amazing horror titles and still own them to this day except I still have mixed feelings with RE4. Still missing RE2 on the GC so to compensate I play the N64 version or the Dreamcast version with also owning the ps4 remake. Finally I want to end this story saying I would find a vanilla copy of RE1 on the ps1 in 2018 and while I can't say it's my most favorite game in the series because of all the cheese especially that intro I'm still glad I played it. Without it, I wouldn't have the chills & tears 6 year old me had in 2002. If you read this far, Thank you & good night. :)
The Gamecube port impressed me so much when it was released. The game looked like it was CGI and to me it still holds up today if you put aside the lower resolution.
I actually prefer the GC version... the remaster looks good, but the green palor filter cast over everything is bunk. I just like the warmer light of the GC original. Plus, some effects, like the reflections in the floor of the foyier blow the remaster's out of the water.
I still own my Saturn Copy of Resident Evil. My mom got it for my birthday in 98. I had beat RE 2 on PS and playing it was my first experience with the original game. I love it almost as much as 2. It has a special blocky place in my heart . I shed dithered mesh tears every time i boot it up..
@@SameNameDifferentGame Thank you for speaking to me sir. Your realness is confirmed. I respect that..Also great video watched it a couple times already to squint and compare the shots you used. ✌Oh and my face is just fine as i used my shadow transparency to cancel out the Mesh when the nostalgia despair began..Haha
Resident Evil was the 3rd game I got for my PS1, after Streetfighter Alpha and Tekken. Saved up money from doing chores around the house to get RE, only afterward realised that I needed a memory card, too. By the time I could afford one I could get right up to Plant 42 before being forced to turn off the PS1.
I don't understand how your channel only has 12K subscribers. This channel is awesome. Thank you Joe for doing what you are doing. I greatly appreciate the fact that you don't have ads. As someone who is probably in the same age bracket as you and grew up playing all the same games as you and is someone who works in the game industry, I salute you. Thank you. keep it coming.
Wait, didn't you do this 10 years ago? SHIT!!! I travelled back in time and now I gotta find a way to get back to the present! l.. (watches video) wait. This is different. So I'm not only stuck in the past, but I'm also in an alternate reality. Just how much did I drink last night anyway...?
Great Halloween choice! I remember being completely absorbed in RE1 on PSone when it launched. Had a friend who had a Saturn and was pretty jealous, well lo and behold one day we were dumpster diving (we were 14 and broke) and found a copy of RE on Saturn behind the video store. Needless to say he was over the moon and it sparked a life long love of the series that continues for him even now.
Great revisited episode Joe. Didn't expect St1ka to make a cameo. That was awesome! Crazy that it's been 10 years since the original video. Time really does fly.
Man, I remember playing the PS1 game and absolutely struggling with the controls at first. It took a good while to get comfortable with them and now tank controls are second nature in any game. This and Tomb Raider blew my freaking mind back in the early playstation days.
Thank controls ate like riding a bike. Once you got it, you never forget. I love tank controls, and i play very well with them. Like you told, “second nature”
@@sjogosPT To this day, i still have huge problems playing Resident Evil 1 with Dual Analog controls, it just does not feel right for me, as in not feeling precise enough.
While it's undeniable that RE took a lot of inspiration from Alone in the Dark, it cribbed a few notes from Riverhill Soft's Dr. Hauzer as well, mostly in the form of its key-and-lock "puzzles", and the boulders. For some reason nobody wants to talk about that one, probably because it makes AitD look like RE4 by comparison.
I LOVE this channel. Since i stumbled upon this channel i have binged everything because im born in 82' so i grew up in the Sega Nintendo era til now.. Still a huge gamer but i also still play retro games. Ill support you thru it all! Your so accurate as well.
RE1remake will always be the best RE and remake imo. Even though Mikami didnt liked fixed angles most of us felt it brought horror to another level because you couldnt see around the corner. The ost was remade amazingly as well and the environment which in itself was another character.
Love the Saturn Port of the game even with it’s differences to the PS Releases. Definitely not worth the price people are asking for it but at least worth getting a repro or a rom for an ODE.
@@LakesideAmusementPro I actually like the colors and models better on the Sega Saturn the colors are more rich and detailed the models are more smooth even with the weird faces it may be missing transparency and certain lighting but the darker and more rich colors and smooth character models are more of a bonus then a downgrade
I have the PS1 re games, and still have the Saturn and Japan ver, bc I use to import the fighting games, all thanks to the 4 in 1 ram cart, I miss those days very much, ty for the video, loved it.
One time i was at a friends house and his brother was playing through and all three of us sort of taking turns back when the original game came out. At a part of the game he could hear a zombie but not see him he spooked him by touching the back of his neck and making a zombie moan. He started laughing at at that moment the phone rang and he nearly had a heart attack lol. No other game got us on edge like that again until the remake came out.
@@SameNameDifferentGame Indeed, first game I burned a NTSC copy of in 2014 after buying the much cheaper JPN version. Well, after doing the same for Scenarios 2 and 3 and the Premium Disc for Shining Force III…
I absolutely love the '31 Frankenstein nod with St1ka at the beginning - very nice touch! Also, those Japanese commercials weren't even trying to hide the fact that RE was inspired by Sweet Home, were they? And I noticed the same sound thing going on with the Saturn RE port when I played it for my dissertation - I feel like it's some weird use of the sound chip/awkward use of the VDPs, maybe? I do appreciate the way the port approached the graphics, though; I wouldn't say they're necessarily better, but they do seem more shadowy so they are their own thing, which I can get behind. Thank you for revisiting this! This is a great video!
I mean, sure, but something else is definitely going on there. This was just my example, but it happens all over the place. You can hear it when Barry kills the first zombie, too.
No shade, but I really wish Avalanche Reviews would have clarified the AitD connection. He actual doesn't seem to mention it, in what is otherwise a thorough compendium of RE history. Anyways, great video, always good to see another angle on this great series.
Good job Joe. You took me on an nalstogic journey. I own the long box version of Resident Evil and it was also my first gsme i purchased along with the console. RE was my introduction to survival horror. In a way playing RE felt like playing a movie. Yes the graphics looks predated snd the dialogue seems cheesy but for its time the did what's it suppose to do and that is to give you that feeling of being scared. Once again tip my hat off to you and looking forward to your next video. Happy Devils night.
20:50 - I feel i have to point out one thing after seeing this scene playing out, as everyone can see the Door is missing from the Beta Version and theres Space on the left and right side, where the Snake is coming in from, now, many of you here must have played the original Resident Evil game on the Playstation, now remember when the very first Hunter would show up and climb up the Elevator and dash through a corridor? Now heres something that many did not notice (or did) after seeing it, the CGI cutscene of the Hunter is not matching with the layout of the Room in the game, i mean with that, the Cutscene includes the Beta entryway and either no one catched this error, the Artist who created it did not have time to fix it, or it was added how it was on purpose. When i was younger, seeing this Cutscene every time on a playthrough made me think "Why does this not match with what i see in the game?" and after the Beta Version of Resident Evil came out, i now know why.
Yeah, I didn't have time to talk about the couple of beta versions out there, but Yawn in the guardhouse in the commercial is clearly from those builds.
Resident Evil has been my favorite series since the original came out on PS1 I picked it up immediately and was so obsessed that at one point I won a contest on resident evil trivia on capcoms website...back when the internet was still very simple...well actually I only won 2nd place because I got the answer wrong when asked how many rooms were contained within the mansion...i was 1 room off...so all I ended up getting in the end was a glow in the dark Resident Evil shirt...I never lost my obsession with RE tbh tho
About the PC versions there is a much rarer PowerVR version that only runs on PowerVR cards and Windows 95/98 but its completely uncensored and runs at 800x600 but yeah its very hard to run and even find.
Lol. The first time I played RE1 was on the Nintendo DS. I still have a knife only run on the arranged mode with one of the item needed to access the last area. I should pick it up. The knife got such an upgrade in 4 and love the stab motion of the knife in RE7.
"Dash" ?., Megaman Legends is called "Rockman Dash" in japan, and that´s what they were communicating, but the concepts of a Resident Evil in the ruins of the mansion and in the middle of the forest with "plants" enemies can be seen in other games as resident evil 2 and the plant enemies and the giant plants that were not that used, in Dinocrisis and other games
Indeed on wanting Barry’s magnum as an infinite unlockable. Great NG+ rewards is the hallmark of RE for me, long after the series stopped being scary or having an intriguing enough storyline. The tease upon the GC remake’s release in 2002 was quite ugh, referring to that gun as the “Samurai Edge”, and while I knew that was a Robert Kendo reference, it wasn’t wrong to expect a sword. Same thing they did in Village with the LZ Answerer; I thought it was the orbital attack weapon used in Chris’ section, not a lightsaber…
Joe, in curious what if Capcom goes an RPG spinoff route for RE? Imagine if they did that as a spiritual successor of Sweet Home. I think it'd be an interesting tribute
@@SameNameDifferentGame It's getting stale the series being strictly shooting 3rd person 1st person, light gun shooter on rail shooter. Capcom can afford to think outside the box
RE1 Remake and RE4 are still the two I consider the best games in the entire franchise. Thanks for letting us know about that Itchy Tasty book. Gonna grab a copy too.
Resident evil is the reason I wanted to buy a play station one of my buddy’s rented it had no idea how or what to do I can still remember the reaction when I figured out how to equip the gun an learning the tank controller style an when resident evil part 2 came out i had to buy a play station I unlocked everything part 1/2/3 had to offer i was hooked with A ratings and I believe i was speed running before speed running was a thing especially for resident evil back in the day 🤘🏼✌🏼
Resident Evil Remake HD is still nr1 in my book (all the extras), would be cool if you could skip te door animations tho (like on the ds). Julia Voth as Jill Valentine is just 👌🏼. Great video on all these versions 👍🏻
Directors cut was a JIP!!! It didn't have the uncut footage and they had the remixed sound track!! My PS classic I have a flash drive with the OG release on it because the music is soooo much better! It's like Castlevania SOTN and Curse of Monkey Island!... sounds tracks is sooo good I have it saved on my phone! Blaze a lil motá and rock RE1, SOTN, CoMI and RE2 sound tracks! Great music!
@@SameNameDifferentGame omg so you have! That wasn’t showing up when i looked. Right. I am off to go be entertained by your re2 vid :) (Will you do re3 soon though???)
This video is a real Bi-Joe-Hazard! (Don't know what that means -- maybe your video's so charismatic, I'm in danger of going bi?) Happy Halloween to you and thank you for the videos to put us in the spirit of the season!
I actually played and beat the DS version, since I never had a playstation or playstation 2 nor a gamecube to play the remake. But the ds version is pretty good too
I hate to admit it but I am not a Resident Evil fan and for exactly the reasons you mentioned. That first game on PS1 was just friggin impossible. Couldn't line up a shot. Took 9 bullets to keep a zombie down. Extremely limited resources. And those God awful tank controls. When playing a game starts feeling like a chore, it ain't gonna be played very long. Still appreciate the retrospective. For what it's worth, I do enjoy newer games in the series. And I've been meaning to give the HD remaster of the Gamecube remake a whirl for some years now.
Interesting thing about RE on Sega Saturn; Capcom did *not* handle that version internally. They outsourced it to Tose (IIRC), because Capcom had no experience with 3D on the Saturn at the time and wouldn't until Final Fight Revenge (and we saw how that turned out :/). I absolutely would not use RE on Saturn as a barometer of the system's capabilities given the nature of its outsourcing and other games on the system spinning circles around RE's 3D (like Labotomy's 3D FPS games, Burning Rangers, VF2 etc.).
Anyone else still pissed they have not fixed the sped up music glitch on the HD remaster? Once you pass the first mansion the bulk of the game tracks play super fast and high pitched and capcom never bothered to fix it. Luckilly the PC version it's a super easy fix but it's just insulting.
There's just something special about the Spencer mansion. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's the most believable, but it's the quintessential Resident Evil experience
I always had a softspot for dithering in old games and with the way the models look, the saturn port just speaks visually more to me. Another game i totally love the dithering look on: Jurassic Park Trespasser when you switch to 16bits.
Totally agree with this one, after playing both intial and Dirrctors Cut on PS1 twice each then hd GameCube version & the DS version and now I've recently gone for the hd remastered remaster on ps4 disc but played on ps5 I'd recommend the directors cut or DS then the new shiny PS4 origins version .... I'll play zero next the circle around to 2 & 3 remakes :-)
The Saturn version is awesome, you must know that the sega saturn is THE BEST console to output 2D sprites, have a look at Symphony of the Night as well :D
I didn't know that there was a Gameboy Color Version from Climax. Also the other differences between the Gamecube/Wii and HD Remastered Versions is the Grenade Rounds Glitch which allows you to increase the number amount of Rounds your carrying.
There's a lot of unnecessary nitpicking when it comes to the Sega Saturn port. While I agree that it's not worth tracking it down if you've played the PS1 original, it's still a great port with neat bonus content. And it was an important victory for Sega at the time, even though it didn't really help the Saturn escape from its untimely death.
The whole point of the show is to explain the differences in the versions, so it's pretty necessary nitpicking, that's what people who watch the show expect.
I actually grew up with the ps1 version of resident evil (before the gamecube one came out) and I believe the Saturn version is superior in both graphics and the extras added. Every one has their own opinion. Its just obvious here that you kinda downplayed the saturn version the whole time you spoke about it lol. Great video nonetheless.
The European PC version doesn't have them, only the US version. Here's a video someone captured using PCem. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WG6T2laUyto.html
@@SameNameDifferentGame np now i know to dl or look for the us import rather the the regular uk version O:) , on another note they did put up a link to the uncensored into back when the dc came out on ps1 and wasnt uncensored as they said it would be, i remember watching it
So cool to see you and St1ka collaborating, love both your channels/content! I do agree the Saturn version looks worse than the PS1 version. It's not just the transparencies but the backgrounds show more color banding and the light-sourcing is noticeably simpler. I love the Saturn and own one since 97, but the hardware is definitely a mess.
The Saturn version is "ok" BUT it just look older than the Playstation, that was the problem of the Saturn games, is like the saturn was ok for the first part of the 90s, but both in looks and style is like the Saturn got stuff in the middel 90s and the type of games on the Playstation just looked far better but also were more modern in style, panzer dragoon saga is a great game, but for real it looks way more dated than the stuff that came to the playstation in the same year
I tried to play the HD remake went I got it as PlayStation Plus freebie. I couldn’t get past the controls and confusing camera angles, though I didn’t know that the HD version had the option of changing the control scheme. Maybe I should give it another try. What are your thoughts on the Puppet Combo developed titles that try to channel some of the unique flavor of PS1 games?
I can see a time when old games will be thee thing to seek out. Gaming feels stale nowadays and I can see many younger people wanting to try classic resident evil and MGS etc. And that can only be a good thing surely?!
Remakes are fantastic but original have another feeling. And about gameboy, i love how they managed to make that game (or 90% of them) with such high graphics. It was a big archivement. Too bad resident evil never came out on gameboy. It was much better than gaiden. Gaiden was garbage.
