Steel joists have been around for a long time, they just never caught on in residential construction. Built an entire house with them in the late 90s. It was a lot more labor intensive since you drilling and screwing everything but the spans you could create were pretty amazing.

Sheet metal joists. Those aren't punch outs, they are lightening holes. Duh, they been doing that since the invention of the Aluminum airplane (I'm sure before that as well). For me to be able to see what walls are or are not structural, to see where the studs, plates, blocking, etc. are without having to open up the drywall. Also, to see what materials and fasteners were used so that I can use the same things to remain code-compliant. Most importantly, for me to see what I safely can accomplish myself and what I need to hire a licensed pro for. I hope all that info will be available to the homeowner in addition to the builders.

ClarkDietrich, there studs have been used in residential for 25 years, they are now seeing a potential for patents and making money in the residential market. The studs and joist transmit sound like a speaker, pick the wrong gauge and the webs pop like an oil can, metal can block WiFi and have you ever tried to hang trim in a metal house... It's not all bad, if you find an experienced builder you get a strong straight house that doesn't move much and meshed wifi does the trick, and wood bucks are your friend... The special track for the metal is not necessary, its just convenient. There are options using the track and studs that do most of what they trying sell. Also check the metal gauge on the material, there's a range for a particular gauge number. Some vendors do a re-roll, they get raw material at the higher end of the range and re-roll it down to the lower end of the range. The guys I knew said the studs had knots, I know sounds funny, but re-rolling metal forge hardens it. This was confirmed by one of the sells reps after he had a few with the crew..:) -MG

I used Dietrich joists for my ICF home in 2000. By varying the Guage I was able to use same depth joists throughout the home. Did have go 12 inches on center for the 24 foot living room span. Very stiff floors, tile guys loved it.
@meshedgears2794
@meshedgears2794 Год назад
@@dvploeg1 Nice I built my place from all metal back in 1997, I made some "I" beams by placing the C studs back to back. The gauge never went up above 20 for the wall studs and headers and beams never went above 16 gauge, I used 10 gauge for the short shear walls. I was also able to weld some of the multiple studs as a bonus. The 25 gauge at Home Chepo are called "tin-can" buy the guys doing structural work or commercial. There was a push before I built my place to go with metal, but the designs were light gauge (18-22) and required a crazy truss like build and more screws than I could count on point load plates. If they had gone up in gauge I think there would have been a sustained use of metal, as it was the extra labor time and lack of experience didn't get metal off the ground. IF I did it again I would look at panels like Thermasteel, but I would be cautious they went into bankruptcy but they might be out, if they fixed there manufacturing they might be viable again. -MG

Just to add to the below comment, one of the benefits of metal floor joists is no mud-sill required. I did my first house and let the joist rest on the raised stem wall. I don't know what the average is for pressure treated wood is around the country, but the house I am building now is calling out 2.5" x 7.5" (3x8's) mud-sills and they are not cheap. Metal floor joist skip this step, combine that with ICF and you get a really interesting set of options. My current build will use ICF as the concrete form work, add ground insulation below the floor and I get a sealed crawl space. Throwing in another option with an 8 inch stem and 4 inch ICF walls, I can set the metal joist directly on the 4 inches of concrete and either plunge the joist into the 4 inch wall or directly attach the ends to the buried studs in the foam... The walls call be poured separately as a cold joint above the stem wall.. Does make thing interesting. -MG

Great show, especially the steel joists and the flush mount Anderson windows. Still looking to see a video on Comfort-board under stucco in place of styrofoam to increase fire resistance of stucco cladded homes in high risk areas. I can see that if a home was spared being burned, it may have still been subjected to heat stress, invisibly melting the styrofoam underneath. This would result in a significant loss of thermal efficiency. I am wanting to see a special weep screed and how the drip planes are maintained during construction. Thanks!

Lumber prices were high in 2004 (at like $400/MBF, which, now, LOL) which always makes steel seem more appealing, then lumber prices go down and it feels like innovation stops (or goes into stealth mode) until they rise again. Gut feeling is that there's a lot of innovation waiting to happen between steel + engineered wood that will result in less waste and possibly open up new possibilities for builds, but "low"-ish prices for lumber in North America are holding us back

Yes, it sure was clever for someone to think of that. They connected an already existing technology and applied the same tech to another purpose. Awesome.

One can of aerosol glue has the same amount of material inside of it as 8 tubes of equal size? Did I miss an important day of physics class, or did he word that poorly? I’m confused. 20:56

The stuff inside the can is different than the stuff inside the calk tubes. As a result of the difference between the two types of glue, this can can do the work of 8 conventional calk tubes.

So does this software store any PII? Anything like address, account number, contact info, credit card info, etc? What if you invite someone and misspell the email? What if that guy forwarded the link in his email to a laborer that you didn't approve, then that Labor goes rogue, because his pay wasnt advanced, and decided to get destructive? How do you protect your client and your project, in finally, your bottom line, from a bad actor?

That last segment on ready framing made me wonder about the ceiling trusses. I think they take out to much of the truss for hvac etc. Looks like a weak spot for sure. If that just holds up sheet rock then fine but another floor above?

Yeah, confrence WiFi is ussually real Shyyyyyt... I've worked at many conferences that my company does and build the back end tech. And the onsite wifi is horrid... the amount of phones in there really drains cell towner and people bring in hot spots and such and they get near dial up speeds, and then the convention center wifi, if the main show paid the venue for wifi, then the speeds are usually set to very slow and the ammount of attendies on it crawls it... if a booth PAID (upwards of 5digits for a drop for two day show) thats the only way they can get reliable internet... so on jobsite hotspot shouldnt be that slow as it was here on the convention floor with the software.
