Resin Lava Bowl 

Peter can you tell me why the mixture boils by itself? Only Peter tells me!

You know what would look cool? Make a lava bowl out of black resin. Then fill up the holes with white or clear normal resin. The result should be a pretty decent marbled look.

You can make a black bowl like this one and put orange normal resin inside to recreate a vulcanic stone with lava..

Those colors remind me of the kitchen/bathroom cleaning sponges you get in the 3-6 pack of different colors

Everytime i look at the thermometer thingy im like amazed at how hot it got but then i remembered its in Fahrenheit....

Now that you have a pressure pot, you might be able to chuck that thing in with some clear acrylic or something and fill in the pores like wood stabilizing

I would fill all of the outer gaps with a clear resin and give it a smooth finish while keeping the visual effect.

Would have been cool, if you tilted the bowl with each resin layer in a different direction, so the layers aren't that even. Perhaps an idea you can experiment on next time.

You should put a prince Rupert drop most of the way inside resin and then wait for it to dry and then break the tail.

As a canadian i was freaking out for the first few layers like '120C? thats nuts" then i realised 100 for me is 200 ish for you and i was like "oh thats hot but not like ... Burn your flesh off hot"

If you used like a polystyrene foam block in the middle, then you could just pour gasoline on it and eat away the foam. If you used a wax block in the middle when pouring resin (that can withstand the curing heat of your resin) you could later melt away the wax...a few ideas come to mind that would make the wood unnecessary.

I believe the "smoke" coming out of the resin is the water steaming out of the dye like with candy making

Now you could use a vacuum chamber to fill all the honeycomb spaces with black (or another colour) and re-turn it to form a really interesting effect.

I wonder if there is a way to dip it in clear resin to fill the holes, thus making it a functioning bowl and still have it look aesthetically pleasing with the holes?

from the thumbnail i just thought it was sponges in resin. and anything that smokes like that ya might wanna wear a mask around😐 better safe than sorry

Now, just sand the interior surfaces, then add clear coat to seal it, and polish it down again, and you could make it a usable bowl.

Why not use a silicone bowl instead of a wood one on the inside?

I wonder if you could add more resin at the end and have it fill in the holes with clear or something? Like a type of candle making where you fill the void wax spaces with other colors of wax

I was wondering if you've ever made resin colored drops that you could drop into resin to encapsulate color in a really specific way, like making paperweights out of glass?

I would LOVE to see this done then captured in clear resin so you can actually turn it to a nice clean bowl... the texture is super cool!

Maybe someone already said this but it might have been cool to "encase" the lava bowl into clear resin to stabilize it so that it could be fully turned on the lathe...maybe another video... Thanks for sharing your super cool ideas.

Duuude, if you did this with black resin, then pour red-tinted clear resin into the bubbles, it would actually LOOK like lava.

Can you do the new Japanese trend where they take aluminum foil and hammer it into a ball and polish it until its a crystal clear, reflective ball? You should check it out. It's very satisfying

What about doing a project with leftover resin cups, stir sticks, etc, kind of like how you made the bottle stopper from a shop towel?

It looks like a camouflage bowl for fruit loops. Very colorful. It's interesting how we start a project with certain intentions, and it seems like there is always some detail that we haven't foreseen. I suppose when almost everything you do has a prototype element to it that's what is going to happen.

This type of material, but stabilised afterward could make for something really cool and solve some of the weakness issues.

Could you fill it up - inside & out - w/ bright super clear resin, spin/chisel it down again, leaving like, 1/2 inch of clear, then crazy shine it w/ the micro-mesh? That way the spongey is protected & can be a mirror shine? 🤗 Just wondering

So many possibilities with that medium, you could have poured more over your "fail" for an uneven layer, pour 2 or more colors at the same time like the magenta yellow and an orange. I always enjoy your videos, they oil the gears of my imagination

At 2:13 I blew on the screen to clear the smoke 🙄 It...didn’t work.

It's such a unique piece! I love the fact that you took what would have been a horrible mistake in any other circumstance and used it to your advantage. I was wondering if you could stabilize the bottom of the bowl by putting straight resin back in the mold, and putting the bowl back in. Maybe that would fill in the holes on the bottom of the bowl and allow it to hold better on the lathe? I think your solution was perfect though.

I used to do faux finish painting on multi million dollar homes here in south florida, which is irrelevant BUT there was a technique that these guys did on one of the houses I worked on that was really cool. What they were aiming for was the look of coral rock, which obviously you can't just go get because that would involve killing living coral reef. All the stone work like railings, pillars, molding, patio fence posts etc were all finished in this faux coral. The effect was similar to what you have. They created it by applying the plaster/mud to a form then, before it set up they would throw handfuls of wet baking soda onto the surface of the plaster/concrete. Once it dried, they'd just go back and brush the baking soda out of the holes and they're left with an textured surface similar to what you have. Just thought I'd share that in case it gives you any ideas

Maybe doing something like this a little smaller say a paper weight in Black then fill the gaps with a deep red for a lava effect 😃👍🏽

That’s crazy dude!! I’m glad that whack process actually worked! As someone whose worked in chemistry labs for school, I had some serious concerns about causing a reaction like that, I would make sure your shop is at least well ventilated, but hey that’s badass!

I literally know nothing about this subject but I love your videos. I probably won’t ever do any projects like this but watching your videos make me happy. They are fascinating and I use these videos as self-care time. Keep it up! Maybe I’ll try something one day!

Could you make a middle insert out of mold maker? That way it’s reusable and you won’t run into the same problem with similar projects in the future.

8:52 I'm glad to see the faceshield but would strongly recommend a respirator as well (or at the very least a good 2-strap dust mask). Urethanes are nasty critters. [source: I make them for a living]

Who else thinks he should do another project with this resin/dye reaction? What if he made something that actually looked like pumice, using a dark brown/black color.

You need to make a silicone insert so you can just pop the middle out of the bowl.

Looks like dish sponges. Very vibrant colors and the bubbling effect made by curing the resin is neat.
