Resin Your Art Rocks - No Experience Needed! Using this Easy How to Art Resin on Rocks Tutorial! I used Art Resin to finish 5 painted rocks in this video- there were 4 different kinds of paint on the rocks. I used Water color Pencils, Watercolor Pens, Fluid Acrylic Paint and Standard Acrylic Paint. Using the resin just makes each of the rocks colors show so much depth and richness. Give it a try and see if you love this simple technique as much as I do!
Art Resin is a lovely product that is mixed 1:1. It doesn't have any VOCs, has a very light oder that is slightly floral, no chemical smell to it in my opinion. I has about 45 minutes of open time and is really easy to work with. It says that it is non yellowing and that is really great especially when we are covering our art work with it.
Make sure to check out the Art Resin Coverage Calculator at bit.ly/ArtResin... to cover these 5 rocks I used only about 1 ounce total of the mixed resin!

Any items colored with watercolor media I used the Krylon UV protecting spray gloss (it's not really glossy to my eye more satin finished. I used it to seal the watercolor media to the stones just incase it would be reactivated - It might not be necessary I"ll have to test that.
Disposable cup to mix the resin in
Stirring sticks (Anything that can be used to stir the resin that you don't mind throwing away.
Disposable Gloves
Small Butane Torch (Kitchen section - torch for Creme Brulee): amzn.to/2LsbI2W (The only time I use a torch with my art is when I am using Resin- It is recommended by the Art Resin company people to use a torch for the most effective bubble removal.)
Something to cover your surface (I used Reynolds Plastic Coated Freezer Paper)

If your rock has been resined can you paint over the resin to make your drawing? Do you just paint? What can you use...acrylic? Ink? Paint pens? Do you have to put a layer on the resin to prep for the painting? If so..what do you use/do? Thank you..I am a newbie and have looked everywhere for answers to these questions. I used leftover resin on a few rocks...now don't know how to paint them. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Thanks for sharing the video. For me, there's nothing to beat a resin finish. As I prefer the signed base of my pre-cast stones to be as glossy as the top, I apply the resin in two separate stages, base first and let it cure then do the same to the top. The main problem I have doing it this way is getting runs but the more I do, the runs are getting less frequent.

How do you deal with the other side of the rock? I get sharp edges around the flat spot? I use my dremel to sand them or I put them on nail tips to dry. ( less contact surface) no one ever talks about the side it lays on or shows it.?

Loved the video. It was very helpful. I work in either acrylic paint or water based pens, or a combination of both. When I resined I noticed spots that looked slightly pitted. Hard to explain exactly but I did notice on your poppy rock you had some of the same. What is that caused by and what do I need to do to prevent that or fix it? Thank you.
@DeliberatelyCreative
@DeliberatelyCreative 3 года назад
The pitting can be caused by a couple things-1 it could be imperfections in the rock and the resin settles into the lowest spots. 2 it could be air bubbles that surfaced an popped and it was late and setting up a bit and didn’t fill back in. 3 it could be dust settling on the surface and creating an imperfection. In rocks- I don’t worry about the imperfections - but if I wanted a perfectly smooth surface I would sand and wipe and then do another coat of resin and repeat until it was acceptable. Remembering that you have to let it cure at least 24 hours(or more depending on the thickness of the resin) Thanks for watching!!
@patmartin7664
@patmartin7664 3 года назад
@@DeliberatelyCreative Thanks for the quick response. I had the rocks covered so it was not dust but could be either 1. or 2. Is it possible to take a tab of Mod Podge or similar and dab that into the spot? I might give it a shot just to experiment and see. This is a learning opportunity for sure. Thank you.

I haven't ever sold any of my rocks yet. I have been thinking of doing that though. I love how they look and just think how special you would feel if you came across a beautiful resined rock. It would be like finding a gem or a gold coin. The cost of of 1 ounce of mixed up art resin is a bit more than varnish but the effect is worth it to me. :)

have you ever taken a painted patio paver and put resin on it? If you have, is it possible to get a very smooth finish on it? Pavers have all kinds of dips and holes in it, but just wondering, because I paint them sometimes with beautiful paintings, but sealer just does not cut it when it comes to putting them out on a porch or near a swimming pool in the summer, etc..I need a way to make them stay beautiful after I am finished painting them.

I use Liquitex High Gloss Varnish (waterbased). No smell, no risk and same shine after about 3 coats with 3 hours between each coat. It’s easy to work with, and it’s best to use a foam brush.

@scrappky

Hello, those are beautiful stones! I have been experimenting with putting resin on my rocks and have a difficult time with the bottom of the stones. Even putting them on silicone mats leaves a little mark on the bottom from where they sat on the silicone. I just tried from someone else's comment to resin the bottom first, wait 24 hours then resin the top, so am trying that now. There has to be a better easier solution!?
@scrappky
@scrappky 4 года назад
That didn't work either! I did the bottoms of the rocks first and after 24 hours, I did the tops of the rock being careful to use the smallest amount of resin and being sure to smooth the sides of the rock with a gloved hand. After 24 hours, the bottom of the rocks still had little marks where they sat on the silicone mat even though I didn't put any resin on the bottom on the rocks as well a few drip marks where the top and bottom of the rock met. What did you do differently that you didn't get any marks on the bottoms of your rocks even though you coated the entire thing in resin? Angela from The Happy Dotting Company coats her entire rocks in resin than rests them on 3 nails driven through a wood block to dry. She does get little marks from the nails though. This is driving me crazy!

Hi! Thank you for watching and your question- If you mean the one that has the poured sunset landscape on the white rock that was Bombay Inks in Liquitex Pouring Medium. The combination of transparent colors in the clear pouring medium in the white surface is what gave that super bright color. Hope that helps!

Hi there, freezer paper is a plastic coated paper - you can find it in a few places- In the kitchen storage wrap isle by the foil and plastic wrap. Or on the Canning supplies isle or in the Quilting supplies at the craft store. Finally you can find Reynolds freezer paper on Amazon. Good luck!

I tried silicone mats and mine stuck, and the drips were awful to peel off before the next batch. Last night I used baking parchment paper and nothing stuck at all! I ordered a box of brown half sheet pan size. We’ll use them for cooking too. Thank you for this great video. No matter what I try I get bubbles and divots after some of the bubbles pop late in the curing. After brainstorming I thing I may be being too stingy with my top resin coat and putting my torch too close which seems to almost instantly harden the resin not allowing it to fully level out. Do you have any thoughts? Thank you.

C. Matsudaira I think that sometimes in the different Facebook groups folks don’t want to give the wrong information or they think someone else will answer it better so they just go past with out any answer. It can be a bit frustrating. Glad I coup D be of some help. As for the metallic paint pens. I don’t have any experience with them and resin so my answer would be to put some in a simple pattern like a heart or star on a roc and mix up a tiny amount of resin like 1 T of resin to 1 T of hardner mix for the 2 minutes and then put it on the rock and see what happens. I personally would rather “ruin” a simple rock than one that took several hours to complete. And if it works you can still hide the simple cute rock too!
