Dear Ghosts,
I normally don't like vintage looks for reasons i might cover in another video but I found the Sigma FP to have a very pleasing image when filming in 1920x1080p despite the pixel binning, which can be mitigated with grain. I used 16mm 50D grain and i think the results are quite nice. I had to resist the urge to add contrast, but there are some stylistic choices which I didn't compromise. I still wanted to shoot shallow aperture and I didn't want to use film stocks, i hoped you could see the texture more clearly.
High end cameras like Arri for the longest time shot at 3.4k. I find that higher resolution often creates a sharper more digital feeling image. I even find myself adding blur as this creates the illusion of rounder thicker edges. In general, I still prefer a cleaner look, but I love trying new things. Hope you found these images to be of interest.
Spend wisely.
Love,
CleverG

I'm in love with your work. I am soon going to learn CINEMATOGRAPHY. I found your videos really insightful for that. I know nothing about Cameras. Let's say I'll take notes from your work the most. I just love your work. Thank You...!

It took me about 50 youtube videos to get comfortable where i am now, i've written down all the notes and small things i've learned in the description, anyone can do it you just need to put in the time and effort

@@cleverghostchili Thanks for the kind words. I'll put all my love into it. My dream is to be a writer, particularly of novels. Currently, I'm working on a novel. However, my plans involve converting these stories into an audio-visual format, such as films. I don't have a budget, nor do I have connections in the film or similar industry. So, I've planned to begin learning the basics myself - of course, I must. While I won't attempt to do everything on my own, I'd love to direct and shoot the project myself. I intend to learn and practice writing, cinematography, and directing to the extent that I can bring my imagination to life.

This is great stuff! I love the simplicity 👏 I noticed one thing and I'm glad I did since it's something that made me think there's something wrong with my fp: there's some vignette effect going on in your footage, and I was wondering if that's coming from the lens you're using, or is it the fact that it's low light? I get that too when I film and I'm hoping to get some tips if you've found a way to correct that. Thanks for your time!
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
Yes the vignetting is mostly from my variable ND and lens when shooting at f1.4. You know it's funny a lot of people will even add vignetting in post to focus attention on the center. But yes if you do want less of this nightmarish or dream look then you can correct in post. Depending on how symetrical it is it could be as simple as making a mask and increasing brightness and feathering it. I'm sure there is a simple button or plugin depending on your editing software to make it even easier. If you want to avoid vignetting just stop down to f2.8 and use better NDs

So, because of you I'll be buying a Sigma FP to finally film a couple of short films I wrote over the years. Which lenses would you recommend for short films? Cheap and good enough. I saw Sigma's short "sin-sin" and researched lenses but would like to know your opinion. Perhaps 2 or 3 good lenses to keep it budget friendly. I know almost nothing about Sigma and Sony, I've been a canonist for 10 years.
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
I think skintones should feel similar if you use the right colorspace, feels very neutral perhaps a little magenta. Lens is very subjective and due to taste, the short film sin sin used cinema lenses, which are a little softer but they tend to be bigger and heavier. I personally find 40mm to be the most cinematic but many prefer 50mm or wider like 35. The sigma FP doesn’t feel too sharp so you can rest easy using a sharper lens even stopped down. For modern cinema lenses I might suggest meike, dzo vespid, if you want affordable stills lenses I’d suggest maybe the canon 50mm, the sigma kit lens 45mm f2.8, or the sigma 24-70 zoom. There are vintage options as well like Leica but you need adapters. The sigma mc21 adapter has some jiggle with the mount which will not be okay for follow focus but is good enough to focus by hand. Do you need autofocus? There is strong base contrast with the sigma FP but contrast zeiss lens can still look great if you like what I’ve done. Otherwise canon, canon fd could work great

Dude, pixel binning is a phenomenal thing. It's a million times better than line skipping that sony uses in 1080p. Ofc oversampling is best but I don't think this cameras processors have the resources to do that. Combining multiple pixels into one reduces aliasing and moire and also gives lowers the amount of noise since the noise within each pixel is averaged with the neighbouring pixels creating a cleaner image.

Hey man, I love yoour work and the cine emulation that yoou achieve in your videos, i have watched your color grading tutorial and i always end up achiving a digitial and non organic look. Do you think its because of the lens? I am actually using a tokina 11-16mm, thank you so much
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
Not exactly the lens every time, I love the look of the Tokina and although I prefer zeiss you can achieve many good results in post along with other factors. If you are achieve digital looks it could be because of the camera or grading as well. In general my style is more modern and I prioritize contrast and roll off, but organic is quite an ambiguous term these days, some may consider my videos too clean compared to film looks

@albiolonline120 7 месяцев назад
Okay thank you for answer me, i am shooting dng 12 bit in 1080 and then i upscale it as you said in your tutorial of how to color grade sigma clips, and i followed all your steps, maybe its because when i am shooting i dont underexpose the footage? I usually leave the histogram in the middle like with any other camera...@@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
@@albiolonline120 I'd have to see an example of your images to know what to help you with. Do you have a post anywhere? In general you will get better results with the FP if you underexpose slightly. It's about have the right balance in contrast as well but that takes a lot of experience. If you are leavnig the histogram in the middle you will probably clip some highlights and lose all the detail

final shot is neat. What denoiser you've used, davinci's built-in?
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
Whoops wrong video. Yes I normally use davinci resolve noise reduction but for the majority of these clips I didn’t use any. I even added 16mm grain. I only used nr for 2 clips, which were the 2 darkest ones, and very minimal 5 NR.

The rolling shutter actually looks lots better than usual, considering how shaky some of the handheld is? Do you attribute that to weight of an Otus?
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
Without a doubt, I also used a Cine saddle for a few of these shots can’t recall which. Hard to use a saddle when you don’t have a tiltable lcd. Considering the diy upgrade….

the pixel binning in FHD (although it might just be straight up lineskipping it seems, not sure) also drops the rolling shutter in half from ~20.something milliseconds to ~10.something milliseconds

@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili 7 месяцев назад
Yeah I’ve been trying shakier footage, no post stabilization. Iunno I like it but your feedback is noted. Focus on the other hand was not intentional, was a bit lazier and my focus pulling was pretty indecisive shooting dark at f1.4 but I don’t always mind the imperfections I wanted more rawness for this test footage
