Thank you for this. I don’t care about drama and wasn’t around for this particular spat, but I know how Twitter mobs work. Thank you for standing up for a person’s right to an unpopular opinion.

It was a very strong reaction. Opinions could have been expressed and a conversation could have taken place in private. All that needed to be said was, that offended me, here is why I think that. I don't think every person on the internet was needed to point out any mistake on his part. We all say stupid things, and the words forgiveness and reconciliation need to be used a whole lot more.

I really appreciate this video. I initially commented on it and I'm not typically someone who gets into things like that. But I did comment and regret it after the backlash he got, but I can't take it back. Thanks for making this. 💖💖💖

Thank you! And on a side note, I seen your comment on Steves latest video and I thought you were very kind and reflective.

5 years late to this convo and no idea who Steve is but I think the drama flames are still burning bright. I didn't even know there was a community of mean book girls, like wtf? I only came to hear about books 😭

👏🏾 I was super appalled by the comment section. I mean those people had SEEN the video where they can see the comment might be out of context...I found him from Chris's videos too and so I thought it was a little out of character what people were going on about. He just said it all a bit...roughly 😂 like Jeezus Steve...😂😂 but still the people who were down right rude were no better than what they believed he meant.

Its hard to watch people get swept up by the drama.

+LuvFromCL yeah. I'm fine with people taking it a specific way because that is natural and understandable. I just wish we would use our words for growth instead of theoretical witch burnings.

Thanks for a very good video. I was an early subscriber of Steve's, but dropped my subscription to his channel after a couple of weeks. He just wasn't the type of booktuber I wanted to follow. I agree he has passion in his videos, but he also displayed (IMO) a sense of superiority that I simply did not like. I just watched the video that has caused all the fuss, and he insulted a lot of booktubers -- non-professional people who love books as much as he does, and who want to share their love of books with others, and have the opportunity to meet their fav authors. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I agree that he should not be bullied (nor should anyone else), but I don't see what he said as being out of character with the "I am better than you" attitude that caused me to drop my subscription to his channel. Thank you for pointing out his good qualities. I appreciate the personal point of view.

Thanks so much for your honest response. I think its easy to get emotionally caught in someones words because we can't easily see the intentions behind them. Through watching Steves journey the things I have picked up on is that he has a sarcastic sense of humor, he can be self-deprecating at times, he loves his dogs, he's considerate of people and most of all he's genuine. All these things may not translate in every video but for myself, I feel very comfortable in being supportive.

Thanks. This was spot on. If RU-vid had a upvote button I would have pressed it. Instead, you only get a like and a comment :-)

I think that it's okay to have a different opinion than someone but to take it to the extent where someone gets bullied is wrong.

Late comment: I'm afraid to voice my real opinions now because I'm afraid people will treat me as badly as Steve. Like this whole drama has caused me so much sadness for him. He's a great guy and you know what, I'm going to go ahead and talk about how I feel about Booktube. Steve was so brave to voice his own opinion. And I generally agree with him on his points. However I do feel that his opinion could have been worded a tad better. He was still brave to say what I've been feeling for some time now, not just with Booktube, but with the reading culture in general. I am a viewer of Steve now and look forward to his videos every day, they bring me so much joy to see his passion for books. I wish more people saw that instead of jumping on the bandwagon to make friends and get people to high five them like you said. They would see a great, intellectual and kind person. :(

I used to subscribe to Steve's channel but ended up dropping my subscription because of what came across as a bit of...perhaps reading superiority? He seems like a smart man who loves books but I think he would be better off promoting books and channels he *does* enjoy instead of criticizing the types of books others read. After all of this drama happened, I wanted to watch his video to hear "his side" of the story. His use of the phrases "real readers" and "normal readers" rubbed me the wrong way and, sadly I don't think I'll be back to watch his videos again any time soon. I of course don't support bullying of any kind but I also understand why people were upset. I hope he has success on his channel (especially since, from what you've said, he sounds like a nice guy) but I also hope he can, at some point, take some time to reflect on why his words might have been hurtful. As an aside, his criticisms of those who attended BEA confuse me. I wonder if he realizes there are other aspects to BEA besides getting ARCs? It sounded more like he was describing BookCon. BEA also included discussions by bloggers and RU-vidrs on creating an integrated community of book reviewers and other "tricks of the trade," so to speak, that make sense for people who are passionate about what they do. It doesn't strike me as much different from any other industry convention and I wonder if he'd question the integrity of computer programmers who go to Microsoft-sponsored conventions to showcase new products they might be interested in? In any case, I enjoyed hearing your positive anecdotes about Steve and I'm excited to find another BookTube channel to poke around in. :) Have a great day!
