Restoration video and running of this 1961 Mamod SR1 nut and bolt live steam Roller,
Although Mamod / Malins have been making stationary steam engines since 1934 and still are to Date their first production of a mobile steam engine was the 1961 SR1 steam roller made by malins engineers, Birmingham England, This models had a one piece burner and was constructed using nuts and bolts rather than the rivets used on later steam models so hence the name, these are far less common and sort after than later models but looked after originals or restored models will sill run as well today.
It was closely followed in 1963 by the Mamod TE1 nut and bolt traction engine and into the 70s and 80s with the SW1 steam wagon the SA1 Roadster as well as fire engines, vans buses, and trains.

AND, now I think about it, I had some power take off items too. I suspect my father bought to encourage our intellectual development. God Bless Him for having such vision in what would make a young boy tick. I grew up to become an Electronics Engineer and my younger brother a Mechanical Engineer. Thank you Dad.

I am amazed at the condition of the boiler after all these years. Well done for taking the time and trouble to restore such a wonderful machine.

A fabulous restoration ! Some interesting techniques you have used there - I would have never thought of using a syringe to paint the rear wheels ! They turned out great. It was good to see you fired the model afterwards & hope it didn’t damage the paintwork too much. Well done indeed.

Hi and thanks for the comment Decided to try the syringe for the wheels after struggling in the past with masking tape. Takes a little patience but I wouldn’t do them early sr1 wheels any other way now Cheers Rich

Great video lovely engine I wish I could get a nut and bolt sr1 one but they are rare to find my friend owns one and he says it’s one of the first sr1s in the world.

Thanks. The 1961 SR1 was Mamods first mobile engine, They do come up occasionally on eBay Uk but quite often without the one piece burner which are very hard to find

Beautiful restoration I just wish that Mamod had stayed with the nut and bolt design instead of going to rivets as would make easier to repair and restore these engines.

Thanks Yes I think the nut and bolt design was mush nicer visually as well.
