Restoration of an Ansonia clock

I bought this clock thinking I am buying a French clock but it turns out it had the American Ansonia movement in there instead of the French mechanism. I am not sure if this was made like this or did someone change the insides at some point. Anyhow, I got involved and set about restoring it.

I love it when people dont edit out the interruptions from the wife, kids or pets! Something very relatable!

hahaha thank you for the comment. I realised a long time ago that I dont have the ability to become a polished presenter so I thought I'd keep it real instead :-)

Very clever use of the crayons. I never would have thought of that. I looked at part 2 before this one and when you showed the finished piece, I couldn't tell where the repair was.

Hi Donald. It sometimes amazes me too when I come up with these crazy ideas. This one worked really well, you'd have to know where the damage is to spot it. Thanks for watching Johnny

Hello Johnny, Interesting project, as this one is a little different it will build your skills... Good to see the tea break interludes back in... after all these little snippets are what make your channel truly unique. Keep up the good work. Paul,,

I never stopped giggling. What with the new movement - my heart in my mouth incase you dismantled without the spring rings - the dog poo, cupsatea, access thru the bottom plate, dirty movement, I've been thru it all just last week. Best go to Bedford Needham Assembly and Adjustment on Antique Ansonia Kitchen clock my only hope to get it together and striking. Yet to do. I've go two broken fine springs to fix first. Good luck.

I don't blame you for having to stop what you're doing to check RU-vid so you don't break something! Now, because of that, you've got some spring clamps coming your way which will certainly be necessary for servicing clocks from North America. You're going to be all set to do more of these as time goes on. I'm somewhat used to seeing movements like this, but I haven't seen any of these French clock movements you were talking about. I'll have to see your other videos involving those. 26:46 I was in tears at this. Priceless moment! As for that ending, that's amazing. CRAYONS of all things saved the day.

Thank you for taking the time to watch. This clock really tested my patience. It really was a roller coaster ride for me as you'll see in part 2. I suppose its not that these clocks are hard to repair, its more a case of I am not used to them. I do have another Ansonia which I want to restore and this time I will be a bit more prepared for it. Hi Brendan Thank you for your kind comment Ive actually finished the clock and got dozens of video clips waiting to be edited and turned into part 2. Editing is so boring and I end uo procrastinating. Mainly ending up on RU-vid and following one link to another all night. Im going to try to get this up within the next couple of days

Love the vids. These model Ansonia's always drop from the bottom of the case. I just finished 2 of the El Arditi a little smaller case and learnt a lot. The bezel and first dial pan should be soldered together. both of mine have 3 clips across the back. I did find when I has serviced the movements and put them back in i laid the case flat and had a small torch from the back of the movement to the front of the case. This allowed me to align the holes get the 3 screws back in. Took me a long time to figure it out on the first one. Great job with the milliput. I wonder if you could have combined different colours for a close effect. I use the flat spring capture rings instead of the round as it gives you a little extra room when you are reassembling the movement . Again was trial and error for me.

Hi Kafren I wasnt sure if this was a clock that had been put together or whether it was as was built. I have since found out from TIME4CLOCKS that this is how they came from factory. You are right about the flat springs, I wish I had bought those instead but at the time I had no idea what I was looking for. I really appreciate the comment because they help me learn and get better at refurbishing these clock. There seems to be a really nice community of clock restorers out there. Johnny

Hi, do you happen to know what kind of finish is used, shellac, lacquer, etc.? Thanks!
@treetopspider
@treetopspider 10 месяцев назад
Hi, I have tried many different finishes. Bearing in mind that this is a natural stone, I dont like the idea of coating it with anything other than some form of wax. Boot polish is very good. In one of my videos I melted and thinned some down with olive oil to make it easier to apply

Well John - I've messed up. You have a great video and I'm looking forward to seeing you fix it - I left a comment on the wrong site maybe yours. Who knows. I had a call for supper and got lost on RU-vid. Must be getting old.

@@treetopspider ACTUALLY THE OWNER WAS A BANKER AND HIS DAUGHTER OUR FRIEND WHO GAVE IT TO ME. THEY HAD AN ANTIQUE SHOP FOR A HOBBY IN ''BIG-BEAR' CALIF., USA MANY MOONS AGO. HERE'S A TRICK I LEARNED FROM HER WHICH SHE LEARNED FROM HER DAD. HE WOULD PUT A SMALL FEATHER DIPPED IN TURPENTINE INTO THE BOX OF THE CLOCKS AND THEY STAYED OILY ON THE WORKS BUT NOT EXCESSIVELY SO. I WAS AMAZED CAUSE THAT SEEMED TO WORK.
