The style of the chair is important. It was a truely stylish (royal) chair made for packing and traveling in small carts and wagons. Usualy a tent, one or two of these chairs, a rope bed, carpet and tent were in a Noble or higher's campsite. All could be packed down small and fit into a wagon. All you did is strip off old varnish. The repair was wonderful!
I noticed a lot of people complaining about the patina but honestly it’s just old varnish and stain. All in all an old broken chair is just that and in the end they usually get tossed in the trash unless someone comes along and saves it.
If the piece is actually trash, has been damaged beyond conscientious repair, yes. But if it is a valuable piece and you strip it, you are hurting yourself-it simply will not sell for as much. But you have made the next person’s carefully cared for piece even more valuable. Check maker’s marks and do homework before you do anything. Especially painting. And right now, mid-century modern is very popular. Clean, wax, repair, unless it is broken or badly damaged. He does not tell us how old this chair actually is-Savonarola chairs are an ancient design, but if this chair were actually ancient, the ‘patina’ is real history you would be destroying. This chair could be any age-if it is newer, he has done a beautiful job! I saw one just like it for sale for 3,500.00 US.
Vintage chair has got back it's lost glory. Super duper finishing looks as good as new,what innovative ideas of those days with hardly any machines help , classic

You wrecked a perfectly good antique chair that took years to get that way at first I thought you were going to fix it but completely stripping it as every historian knows that only draws from the true value!
Couldnt have been that old. He took it apart with a wrench. im no expert but im pretty sure they didn''t have standard nuts and threads, this is a reproduction piece at best. besides the rungs into the beam would have probably been morticed all the way through.

Nearly all chairs in that particular style actually date from no earlier than the mid to late 19th Century. They were enormously popular during the Victorian era. At any rate, stripping it of its original finish seriously dimishes its value.
Thank you for giving the age of the chair. It is such a graceful and elegant design. Yup a pity about the loss of its patina. But if copied would be an awesome addition to most homes. It has a unique ageless quality with its soft lines
@@Mandy7D7 The fact that the chair could not function as is refutes your assessment. Once repaired, it was easier to match the natural wood color than it would be old varnish.
Brilliant. I have one of these that was passed down through a couple of generations. Mine has a table top that flips down so you can use it as a table or as a chair. I had no idea what it was. I do not have the skills that you have to restore this. I wish you were in the United States so I could bring my savonarola chair/ table to you. I want to sell mine. Do you know anyone who buys these chairs?

I have a chair just like this, minus the pretty backrest, We use them in The Society for Creative Anachronism, and make our own modern copies, i was thinking of trying to refinish mine, but was afraid to pull it apart and not be able to put it back together right, Now I'm willing to try.

Seu trabalho é perfeito. Muito lindo. Parabéns!!! Tenho duas cadeiras deste tipo( savonarola) e gostaria de saber se é possível pintá-las de uma cor mais clara, tipo esmalte ou laca, pois a madeira é muito escura. Acho que é nogueira ou imbúia. Abraços.
