Nice one John, the red and gold looks great although I quite enjoyed the green & gold as well 👍🏼 Fully agree with the 1st World issues, we have much to be thankful for 🙏🏼👍🏼
@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I’m guessing because it’s the type of thing vintage aficionados would appreciate watching and there’s not too many of us around. Everyone else either wants to be entertained or learn something new that they could possibly do themselves.
Good job 👏 I haven't done any work on the mercian yet, its how I found it from the previous owner on single up front. Am not going to change anything as I am new to retro road bikes and have 2 vitus 979 to play with 1st. I'll probably sell the mercian. Thanks for responding to me, its very encouraging for us beginners to be able to watch great videos for help and advice.
The gold chain and freewheel does look good on the red Mercian! As for the stiff chain link after rejoining it... I use the middle "shelf" on the chain tool to lightly push the rivet and take the compression off of the link. In this age of quick links (which are indeed handy), some folks might not know about this feature of the chain tool (or might not know about chain tools at all??).
Black rims and gold freewheel look great on the red bike. And more thanks for addressing “first world problems” in terms of your/our bikes. It’s real, and Your humbleness is one reason I enjoy watching your videos. Be healthy and happy John!
Yet another advantage of a vintage bike... swap chainset double to triple, adjust front derailleur and you're good. On a modern bike you would probably need to buy new stuff. Good work!
Another good video. Very useful jobs and the bikes are all the better for your labours. The Trek looks ripe for a restoration so unless something else appears then please do the Trek.
Thanks for your reply. I don't actually know what model. I bought it second hand in the 1980s.It's currently resting while I look for a replacement front rim/Mavic module e
@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I don't actually know what model. I got it second hand in the 1980s and used it every day back then. I'm looking to replace a worn front rim first so I can ride it again.
Nice video John. I never had a Campy Rally, looks nice. The dirt ejecting bottom bracket cups are record I believe. The cheaper cups (Gran Sport} were missing them on my Competition G.S.. Somebody mounted a rack on my '75 Raleigh Pro, and dented the seat stays. I wish they used one like yours. Looks great, black rims look cool.
Being part of the 99.9% cohort, yes do the TREK. Can I suggest putting on a Campy 11 speed groupset. Swapping over parts is a totally legit use of time!
Great video, the lugs on both bikes are truly bike porn. And yes, please do the Trek. I have a Trek 900 series that I have had resprayed but poor boyed with Shimano 600 Tri Color and I love it.
Do you have a Vitus 979 in your collection ? They were quite famous in the 80’s, the Irish racer Sean Kelly rode one for years. Quite a beautiful frame.
Hi. Nope. I dont have one. The closest thing I have to that is an ALAN. Im a bigger guy. dont know if Id ride either one vigorously. Thanks for watching.
Both bicycles are flexy, that’s for sure, indeed to be ridden with a little care, but hey that goes for all those beautiful classics. For wet road conditions/chances of rain I use a beater bike. You have a nice collection, thanks for the vids.
