I grew up in a home with a fridge much like that one. My parents got it as a wedding present in 1960, and it was second-hand then. When my parents moved from that house around 45 years later, it was still running.
@@souschef4489Yep..we had to shop for a new fridge recently. Tried to research something that would last. Turns out it doesn't matter because they're all crap and will maybe last you 7yrs.
Yes, we must have the same brand at that time :) It was a «Frigidaire». Now they are made for about 5 years of use.... and they cost thousands of $ ... Recently in my region we had a power outage for more than a day. All the owners with recent fridges can't start again them. Part of the system inside are done with computers cards and when the restart the power because the charge was higher, all these cards broke. This was not coverd by the warranty. After they check with the cie, people can't even buy and replace these cards anymore because they do not keep one master. They call that «evolution»...🙄
It's beautiful but I was disappointed that you didn't show more of the after; it was so much work and I feel like I just got a glimpse of the results. I wanted more!!

Молодцы мужики. Руки растут как положено ,голова у них работает отлично , не только шапку носит . Вашим женам круто повезло. Спасибо большое ,подгяли настроение ❤😂
Wish I could have seen a more zoomed out showing of it. Leaves a lot to the imagination & I would have loved to see it in all of it’s restored glory. 🥺
My Aunt and Uncle both passed in the 90's. They had the same Fridge (only one they ever owned) since they got married in the 1940's. They never had a problem with it and my Uncle painted it every so often to keep it looking nice. When they'd passed their stupid kids had it hauled off to the dump when they'd cleaned out the house! I would have loved to have that old thing. They even had the SAME old aluminum ice trays! You know the kind with the handle!
I've got one of these fridges that need restoring, too, but when I DID use it, my electric bill was *considerably* higher. Not efficient at all, and yes, the seals were intact. Still, I love it 🥰
I never remember the spoilage of our fruits & vegetables back then either. But with these late models it doesn’t matter if I use the filter to keep the moisture out or not, they keep feeling up with moisture. I’m a big believer that everyone in a business for refrigerators, washers & dryers, plus cars, have made changes that cause us to keep replacing,( all small appliances as well) I call it greed. All progress isn’t good, if it’s working, stop trying to fix it. If we saved lots of money on replacing all this stuff, paying a little more for electricity wouldn’t be so bad. 🤷♀️ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Dude. You got mad skills. Not only the painting, the chrome and brass plating, but getting all of the systems up and running again. Bravo. Wish I could afford you.
I was just gonna say, the only thing that actually “NEEDED” restoration was the cosmetics. Bet it still ran cold😂. But while your at it I bet it was cleaned up internally too.
That's how they keep the money rolling in now adays. We've got the materials and technology to make things last a lifetime but that's not profitable if you never have to replace them.
You know it's wild if you just followed the maintenance instructions for most things they last just as long as old s*** used to maybe it's that people are stupid and lazy now 😂
@@HandsomePutin this! and no one knows how to fix shit anymore or even attempts to. would push their fridge to the curb over a AC leak or clogged condensor. shit it could even just be a bad pressure switch or temp switch keeping it from running.
I was SO scared you were gonna paint it black, white, or grey. The orange was cute. But then you busted out the blue, and I was like YES. And then you used the lace as the stencil, and I was HOLLARING! I want one.
@@yj4003 I WAS because I am sick and tired of boring furniture and appliances!!!!!!!!! And people ruining vintage items by "modernizing" them rather than honoring them. This fridge here was honored, HONORED instead of ruined.
In 2017, I moved into an apt with woman who placed an ad on Craigslist for a roommate. When I arrived for the roommate interview, I walked into a kitchen with a fridge very similar to the one you restored. [While my roommate didn't actively collect vintage items, she tended to embrace old things bcuz they were made better & generally pretty sturdy. Also, her grandmother partially raised her & she was from a time when frugality was common.] The fridge in the apt is from 1951 & the stove is from 1954. As a holiday gift in 2019, I wanted to find a company that would restore the fridge bcuz the rubber gasket was crumbling & the roommate would take a full day or so to defrost the tiny freezer. It would get like the tundra in there. I never found a restorer in the NJ/NY/PA tri-state area, but in 2021, roommate bought a house/moved & loved the fridge so much, took it with her! It took 3 strong, young men to get it down 2 flights of stairs (it was VERY heavy & 1 of them nearly got crushed) & it left a trail of a couple of gallons of water, from its nook, thru the kitchen, & down the stairs. The stove is still here though and I use it weekly. Like the old-timers say "They just don't make things like they used to". Great job guys!
That’s not restoring. It’s retro modding. You owned that fridge and kept its history. That’s art and skill. Cheers. Edit: someone said resto-modding … I think that’s more accurate than my comment.
I love the way that turned out!! I love the look of the old 50's refrigerator but the color and designs added to it make it look so good!! Great job done to it, looks great! 💙👏
it's amazing that so many of us find this so satisfying, and nostalgic at the same time. It's a refrigerator, yet here we are all 'smiles and wow's' about it. beautiful
My 98 year old grandmother has one from 1945. Its still working better than anything you can buy today. It has like a Cadillac looking emblem on the front of it and has more steel in it than a modern car...
There are certain colors that bring me back to the nostalgia of the forties and fifties. That beautiful coral green color is one of them. One of my earliest memories is back in 1957 as a three year old belting out "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley. Good times.
Love Johnny Cash.. Awesome song And Beautiful work I have my grandmother's original Frigidaire with a small freezer inside. She passed in 1975. We as a family continued to use it in our cabin until the early 80's. After my folks built a retirement house on the property, the old frig sat unused. In 2018.. I inherited it and it still worked flawlessly.
@@tylerharris5367 This company sells in N.A. therefore there are not shipping costs invlolved. As for buying local, which company locally makes such appliances?
I love how you did the lace detail that is just gorgeous probably the most gorgeous refrigerator I've ever seen and I love that you use the right color for the era
@@denisewilson8367 hmm 🤔 interesting, yea I saw the shades of green but it gave me more blue notes in my eyes like o ran blue/green , but thank you for the correction Add: went back and rewatched the video is looking more green now
First of all, beautiful job. Like 12 out of 10. Second, this is the kind of work you can spend 14 hours a day on 7 days a week and can't wait to get started when you wake up early the next morning. Great job!
@@RacketTattooNo they were built to cool and freeze. The insulation used means that, incidentally, they are now slowly damaging the ozone. Along with insulation from old houses with old insulation. The difference is that old homes contain much more of the cfc leaking insulation than an old, improperly discarded refrigerator.
@@RacketTattoo We could learn several lessons from how they used to build fridges. Mainly, use all heavy duty components, a lot of insulation, and a seal that definitely prevents air leaks. What you spend in additional materials and lose in energy efficiency across decades, you make up for by not having to replace every 2 or 3 years. I wonder how much of old appliances is actually recycled and how much is dumped, since I can't foresee many reuses for the insulation used in fridges or ovens.
