1 year trailer update video: • Everything I did wrong...
We completely restore an old car hauler / utility trailer and keep a tally of the costs. It took completely tearing it down to the frame in order to have a perfect finished product. Sandblasted, repainted, electric brakes on both 5,200 pound axles, new diamond plate fenders, 7,000 pound drop leg jack, 2 5/16" bulldog hitch, lockable tool storage box, new 6 lug 15" wheels and tires, all LED lighting, new wiring harness and connector, & reflective DOT tape. #trailer #restoration #rebuild #restore #repaint #rewire #fabrication
00:00 Overview & plan
2:30 parts gathering
3:25 Fabrication
6:42 overhauling the brake hubs
10:17 fender mounting
13:20 replacing the jack and hitch coupler
15:25 sand and paint
17:00 wiring electric brakes and LED lights
23:05 reflective DOT tape

I had to turn it off when I saw the spring brackets being stacked and welded to already buggered up welds with undercut into the frame. I couldn’t believe they actually showed that kinda work

It probably wasn’t best but I don’t think it’s that bad

I’m still not understanding why he stacked it. Option would be cut the tabs off flat without cutting into the old welds if he didn’t want to take a chance with the frame. This just looks horrible.

Gotta learn, greaseable or not,those bearings needed packed, greaseable just means can push the hub caps off and the bearing is still dry

I'm an Industrial Electrician and maintenance tech. When I rewire trailers for people, I run 1/2" EMT under the trailer and pull the wire through it. That will protect the wiring better than pretty much anything else. I also install a backup light. That seems to always be a huge hit with people. LOL I put one on my dad's trailer and he thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. You wouldn't believe how often a backup light on a trailer would come in handy until you start using one. EDIT* When you run EMT, you can buy your wire in spools instead of in those packs. It's cheaper that way if you are frequently asked to repair trailer wiring for people.

Spring hangers are just about the scariest thing I've ever seen. Spring hangers are very high stress parts.

You need to weld 2 chain points on each side of the frame and buy a grade 70 chain 3/8” size and when you connect the chains to the coupler of the truck x cross them so in an event where the coupler fails the trailer drops into the X acting as a cradle and that’ll prevent it from falling down and touching the road.

Very informative. Im no trailer fabrication pro, but I was thinking instead of stacking beads on the tongue to fit the angle of the beams, you could throw a bottle jack inbetween the beams and try to pry them outward just a tad. Just because they probably were supposed to be at that angle to begin with and I think it would be safer than having a possible gap between the hitch plate backing and the frame beam.

Cool video, I really enjoyed watching it. I would definitely think about welding the safety chains independently. The setup you have now if one hook fails you’ll loose both.

You gained a new follower after seeing the tip of battery charger to test the lights and brakes. As a ceetified welder myself i too cringed when you stacked the leaf spring bracket but at the end of the day that is your call not ours. Trailer came out great but i will say them steel grates are mad heavy. I wonder how thick of metal supports were used on that trailer running across. Thanks for the great content 🤟

I too found factory welded spring hangers welded out of spec on a trailer I own. The thing is I owned it for 13yrs before I found they welded all (but one) the hangers in the wrong location

Nice Z, I have 2 NA's and both are 1990. One of them is blue with blue cloth interior, manual only has 27k miles and it looks like new. I took it to z1 motorsports for a ppi and they couldn't believe the condition of the car, every employee sent back to see it. Love this cars but I'm moving to bmw now.

that bracket stacked idea is dangerous if that snaps that axle gonna drop and flip that trailer over and you gonna hurt someone or your self take it back off and do it properly thats just plain silly tbh the trailer was safer before you butchered it doing that if i seen this and stopped you id have that trailed impounded and crushed

excellent resto...our registration (tag ??) requirements in Tasmania Australia are so different. ie must have illuminated rego plate, orange turn indicators, and very little reflector tape other than on the rear. I do like the tri light on the rear to indicate size of trailer. An great looking trailer, well done.

You should always cross your trailer chains. That way if the hitch or coupler ever fails the chains act like a cradle to hold the trailer up.
@chuckbrown5035
@chuckbrown5035 Год назад
That’s an old wives tail. It doesn’t do any good. The trailer just moves forward and the tongue hits the ground anyway. The only way it works is if the chains are very short. But if they’re very short you lose all of your turning radius.

I can't believe you used spray cans to paint it when you have an air compressor. A cheap harbor freight spray gun with any variety of rust paint could have been used with better coverage and way less cost. POR-15 or U-POL would work great to paint the rest of the trailer (or just paint the whole thing with a good heavy coat)
@jeffro221
@jeffro221 Год назад
At 6:02, your weld on the inside of that bracket missed the line for much of it. Three-quarters of the weld is mostly on the old bracket. You need to go back and make another pass right down the middle. Why would you grind down the weld on the other side, and lose strength on a critical weld, just to have a flat surface for paint on a bracket under a trailer? Bad idea. Stacking the brackets is another ill-advised idea. You could easily have ground the weld out and removed the old one, just be careful and use a thin wheel, and easily avoid the frame.

Very nice video, I cane to see the comments about the spring brackets. I would have done it differently, it looks unsafe, best thing to do is getting rid of the old ones and add the longer ones instead of stacking them. Great job man.

@@GreaseMonkeyTV That is not much paint coverage. You can scuff what you did already and give it a proper paintjob with a spraygun and your compressor. You can also use a roller on the grates if you don't want to spray it. POR-15 would work great. Rustoleum sprayed in a gun if you want to go cheap,
