This huge 26-inch mitre box saw was made by E. C. Atkins of Indianapolis around 1911. Atkins was one of the top US saw makers of the hand tool era. The saw blade was made of thick, very high quality steel and the handle was made of apple wood. At some point in its history, the saw was left outside on the ground, exposed to the elements for perhaps several years, resulting in extensive rusting and the onset of decay in the handle. Luckily this piece of history was not thrown away and survived for us to bring it back to life.
My goal in tool restoration is to make the tool clean and functional while preserving all of the unique signs of its age and history.

The real pleasure for me with this restoration is the quietness and simplicity of approach. It's mostly hard work and patience. That teeth setting! Wow! If you're restoring for pleasure then this is what it's all about.

Greatest series of silent movies ever! Here is my video restoration Christmas list: Hand planes (steel, transition, coffin, moulding), draw knife, spokeshave, small hand drill, breast drill, a REAL mitre box, chisels, building a work bench, a shop tour, and all the rest I've forgotten to mention. In other words, more please. You are a craftsman, great work!

I picked one of these up for free with the miter box. Considering keeping it around after this motivating restoration. Might save some time on the shooting board once dialed in!

Nice! Beautiful saw! I recently did a small job for a widow who gave me her late husband's Stanley miter box saw - all I've done so far is cleaned it up, got it functional again and sharpened the teeth on the saw. I'm not sure I am going to do anything further to it.

That is sad how bad of a shape that was in. Most Large miter saws were in large cabinet shops and were well taken care of. I found one 26" made by Disston and restored it. It turned out very nice . You can even read the etching. Nice job on this Atkins.

Beautiful restoration. May I ask, does the auto polish help protect from rust?
@thehandtoolworks
@thehandtoolworks 10 месяцев назад
Hi @davestinyworkshop, it is mainly for appearance here although polished steel will generally be less rust prone than a rough surface. I usually use paste wax on saw blades to help prevent rust.

Couldn't you remove the spine? Looks good though, nice shot of setting the teeth.

Are you sanding with some type of oil on it?
@thehandtoolworks
@thehandtoolworks Год назад
Yes, I usually use motor oil or 3-in-1

was there a reason you didn't use different grades of automotive sandpaper with a lubricant?
@thehandtoolworks
@thehandtoolworks 2 года назад
Hi Dahl, I didn't have automotive sandpaper on hand, but I think that could work nicely.

Superb...but why were they so long?
@robertcornelius3514
@robertcornelius3514 2 года назад
I believe it had to do more with the weight than the length. More weight was easier to cut through hard wood.

This type of saw was used in an old mitre box 😁 the longer the saw, the wider the parts you can cut on the box. And a longer saw means more teeth; which give a more efficient and faster cut for each stroke of the saw 😁 The saw would be great on it's own for sawing the walls of dados, or cutting the shoulder on a tenon for a large breadboard end 😁
@jimcarter4929
@jimcarter4929 Год назад
@@whittysworkshop982 I have used mine for dados with guide block, sometimes for free hand cuts too on bigger stuff where I want nice cut.

Waaayyy too much work up front! Take a few paper towels soaked in vinegar and keep it wet for a few hours. Scrub with a vinegar-soaked ScotchBrite, rinse and 90% of that scraping is eliminated. Follow up with 120 grit sandpaper with oil and you’re done. Then the real work begins.
