I lived right near an Atari dealer/repair shop and I would buy every Atari ST variant they had used for under 10 dollars, which was quite a few by the mid 90's. I bought stacks of printers and monitors (seemed to always have a bad regulator issues), stacks of computers. I loved them. I would repair and give them to friends and family alike. When I lost my farm to due to health issues, they all went to the dump. Broke my heart. Its great to watch these videos and see that folks are once again interested in these wonderful computers. Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together and publish it. I'm about to pull a 1040 ST out of storage and I have no idea what condition it will be in (it was subject to the seasonal temperature differences, but little-to-no-moisture supposedly). Are there any gotchas with a 30 year-old ST, such as capacitors that should be replaced, or batteries that could have leaked?

There were no on-board batteries on the 2 1040stf units ive worked on, other newer models may have had them, but I think you'll be fine on the 1040stf. Capacitors are always a concern on a 30 year old device....none that I encountered were leaking and they all 'looked' good...but looks don't mean much after 30 years...I didnt replace any and the system works great. They would not be terribly difficult to replace if needed. Good luck getting that old Atari back in service! Let me know how it goes!

Basically, most ST machines were sold with 3rd grade capacitors. Those must be replaced. There are dead since a long time now. Servicing those machines is the first thing to do before even trying to switch them ON ! :)

I powered on my 520STM System after 25 years of storage in it's original package. Although I did several modifications to the ST back in the 80's, it works without major issues. 👍 I made a video-series (4 parts by now) about it, only german, but pictures speak for themself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s5wlVlgxbSo.html An album with more detailed pictures of what I did to the system: flic.kr/s/aHsmyrFUTL 😉

2:32 I see that you've connected esd cable from hand to metal case. There is no point to do it, because you took out power cable cord from Atari's power supply. So that metal case isn't grounded. There is a plastic case under it, and then wood desk, and you have shoes on yout fit, so you are not grounded. That esd cable you should connect to the wall cord (to the ground pin), or to the PC case (which sould be grounded), or just forget about that stupid ESD band, throw it away, and before each electronic job, first just touch water pipes or heating pipies in your house, or touch someone's hand. (Only when you feel a spark coming out from your finger - only then it is a proof that you had an electric load. But it most cases you have not)

$76? Wow, I got two 1040 in much better condition. One 1040STF with SM124 for 2€ together, another 1040STF for about 13€, here in Germany.
