It's also posibly a chemical burn from rubber pressing against plastic for a long time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_GH0ZpaTwqs.html I've actually had a famicom in storage for a long time and it ended up with those marks everywhere, and nobody in my household ever smoked, much less near a vg console only kids played with, so I'm pretty sure it was that kind of chemical burn.

@AvengerII
@AvengerII 4 года назад
Modeling putty (Tamiya putty; stay away from the two-part mixtures and things like Bondo which are REALLY toxic!) would probably fix that melt spot but then you'd have to color match it (possibly paint it) after sanding it. Yeah, the sanding's the issue. You could lose some of the matte detail in the plastic with sanding if you use to high grit a paper to sand. You'd probably want to sand with 600 or higher grit paper. It depends on how anal/crazy you are. I'd probably leave that spot if it's the only deformed spot. It's generally not worth fussing over something that small.

@Hobo, you don't know how to fix it? Too bad, because I'm sure Elliot does. It's part of the heritage of the console, and you could argue so is the yellowing, but I can understand why he'd stop at a certain point. It isn't mean to be an "as new" back to factory restore.

@Wheels8504 3 года назад
Also just being lazy
@Magisktification
@Magisktification 2 года назад
@@Wheels8504 No just sensible. It all boils down to investment both in time and money vs the value of the console. Its clean and it runs games, honestly what more do you need? Besides repairing it would certainly make it look worse. The structured surface of the molded plastic is not to easy to replicate and then you have the issue of color matching. Probably would have to paint the whole thing to make that happen. But since your not lazy why dont you show us how its done.

There are some new gurus saying the bleach solution is unnecessary and you need to just put the plastic in direct sunlight (not through a window) and it reverses the process caused by diffused uva/b and fluorescent lighting. PHD polymer scientists have backed up this theory.
@kuroneos8059
@kuroneos8059 4 года назад
@@ShapeyFiend I'll add extra info on your comment ! You're right, the bleach solution isn't necessary BUT it helps to accelerate the process. As you said, the UV are responsible of the bleaching and this is the exposure time that will affect the most the bleaching. I had a (very) yellowed Game Boy and I had to use my Game Boy Solarium twice during 30h for each exposure. I also used a hair bleaching cream (true) to help the process. 'hope that'll help :)

Here's an advise: Try to get 12% (so you don't need to combine with water) H2O2 to reverse de yellowing of the plastic they sell gallons I think... And try to buy led uv lights with a power source so you can put the light arroud the plastic box with the aluminum foil... Or see the Odd Experiments videos and he has a tutorial of how to remove yellow color from plastic... He demonstrate it with a dreamcast control... PD: love your vids ❤️❤️❤️

You might wanna use a black container for the retro brighting! It'll help build up a green house effect and create more heat inside the container over the time. Also don't forget to rotate the pieces or the container every half hour, roughly, to ensure even exposure to the sun light. Should it be a bit too cold then you should boil up a pot of water and add it to the mix. The 8 Bit Guy made a few videos about retro brighting, you should check them out sometime soon and get more tips from there.

Some people have mentioned 8-bit Guy as the guru of Retr0brighting, but Elliott here has definitely learned from the master. His Retr0brighting worked to some extent. I would make a few suggestions for future Retr0brighting. 1st, one of 8-bit Guy's biggest advantages is that he lives in in the state of Texas, USA. One thing about Texas is that it is hot almost year-round. 100F/37C degree days are not uncommon in Texas. Elliott lives in the U.K. and presumably tried Retr0brighting near the date of this video's posting, in the winter season. The higher heat temperatures help the Retr0brighting process go faster. 2nd, dilution with water is unhelpful, that dilutes the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide. The stronger the H2O2, the better. Also, I am unsure whether it is a good idea to mix water with the cream. The white stuff they add doesn't help the process, it's job is to allow the peroxide to stick to surfaces. I think if Elliott used the clear peroxide he would have better luck with the nail hardener UV box.

Using a thin piece of cardboard works quite a bit better than using a cartridge to clean the slot. Anything about cereal box thickness works great. Cut a piece the width of the cartridge slot, fold it over so you don't get any of the paint side in the slot as well as being double thickness. Spray some alcohol on it insert like a cartridge. The porous cardboard helps trap any corrosion and remove it instead of being just pushed around like the contacts from a cartridge do.

Use the creme and apply it with a paint brush to the yellowed part of the console. Cover all applied areas with plastic wrap, put in direct sunlight or your uv setup. Depending on yellowing it can be as little as 30min to come back to original color. Repeat if necessary. You can watch any youtube shoe restorer, this method works wonders.
