Restoring my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 - Part 6

I change all of the crankcase bearings and prepare to install the new crankshaft, although I ran into a few problems. First, I was sent the wrong bearing, which cost me a week. Then I find out that I was sent the wrong crankshaft, which is out of spec. The shafts should be 25mm, but they're 25.4mm,, so the inner bearing collars don't fit. It's what can happen when doing such a comprehensive restoration, so you just have to roll with it. Everything will get resolved.
I go step by step in these videos, so you can see the entire process and use it as a reference for your own bike. Also, check out my Rider Magazine article on this Bullet 500 when it was still running. #royalenfield #motorcycle #motorcyclelife #losangeles

so happy i found this series, it gives me the boost i needed. during winter break between college terms, i'm planning on giving my dads 2001 bullet 500 a restoration. hasn't started in 11 years and i am so excited to sink my time into it. my dad has lost hope but he doesn't realize that since my first car was a 43 year old bmw, i'm used to dealing with unreliable and broken vehicles.

Thanks and that’s awesome. Mine turned out to be a basket case and it’s all very doable. Best of luck and it’s worth it!

Thanks for watching and I appreciate that! The cat is my supervisor. And the Ducati is an amazing bike for sure. Looking forward to reviewing it.

I had exactly the same problem with a reconditioned crank for my 350 bullet. They'd ground the timing shaft to 1" instead of 25mm. This was from Alpha bearings who are pretty much the goto people for crank rebuilds in the UK. The timing shafts are supplied oversize and need to be ground down to spec. So not uniquely a hitchcocks issue. You start to doubt yourself when it simply will not go on, then I got a micrometer on it and all became clear. They are sill tight mind. I landed up winding mine on using sections of 1" ID iron water pipe as spacers and the crank nut as a puller.
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
Glad I’m not alone and interesting way to push it on. Like a puller in reverse. If this one is otherwise compatible with the bike, I’m fine with machine the inside of the bearing collars to fit. After talking with Hitchcock’s, it seems that all of their “25mm” crankshafts are like this. I might be stuck with this one.
@twostroke350
@twostroke350 Год назад
If you're doing the inside of the bearing race, you could probably do it with a brake calliper hone or a reaming tool. Fitting it hot would probably help too.
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
@@twostroke350 I tried fitting it very hot already and it’s a no go, but I will fit it hot so it’s a relatively tight fit. I’ve got some tools to widen the interior, so I think I’m good. I’ll keep you posted.

Remember me ? Getting a little bit of clinking noice from the head. Any idea on what it might be? Your video quality is very good. Really good effort you put in. Keep up brother 🙏. Love from India 🇮🇳
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
Thanks for watching! If that external oil pipe isn’t getting enough oil to the top end, it can cause issues, but I’m guessing the valves just need adjusting with a top end clinking noise.

In my opinion, the crank collar you're facing problems with is not bi-directional, it goes through a specific direction. I am saying this because I saw my mechanic doing this while assembling somebody's bullet crank.
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
I actually tried both ways. Didn’t work either time. And the first time, I put it on as it was facing in the bearing. My caliper shows the shaft is 25.4mm when it should be 25mm, so it’s the crankshaft, not the collars. And if you look at them, they’re identical in diameter and machining on both sides.

That's a bummer about the crankshaft and the bearing. I've never used Hitchcock's but to get 2 items wrong isn't very confidence inspiring but I'm glad they've put their hands up and that you wont have to resort to machining parts. Those bearing race rings are hard as ****, it would probably have had to be ground out. Anyway, looks like you'll be back on track soon, hope so. I'll check out your Ducatti video when it's posted. All the best, Phil

Thanks for watching and I’m looking forward to reviewing my Ducati. Yeah, I’m glad I don’t have to machine anything as they are very hard. Hitchcock’s is usually rock solid, so this is a rare blunder on their part. It’s frustrating, but I have nothing bad to say about them and they’re sending me a new crankshaft very soon. I should be back on track next week.

Unfortunately older royal Enfield have slightly different specs. Hopefully Hitchcock didnt make you pay for shipping.
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
@@silverback3926 They handled it well, but other parts turned out to be out of spec as well. I’m having to improvise a little to make it all work, but it’s finally coming to a close. Part 7 will explain things. Once the bottom end is back on the bike, things should move along quickly (I hope 😎)

Hi like your videos. I have a question if we put a high pressure air like 120 psi by the crankshaft timing side oil hole does it pass through the floating bush side by the connecting rod . Pls let me know. I have an issue where I think the crank oil hole is blocked on mine that’s why.
@AlbertDongler
@AlbertDongler Год назад
I feel your frustration. Fortunately Hitchcock are very quick at putting things right so they should hopefully have you sorted out ASAP. Still a pain in the a$$ though. Are you keeping the bore and stroke original ?

Yeah, they’re being very helpful behind the scenes. And yes, I’m keeping the bore and stroke original

I’m curious as I just had the same crank failure on my classic 500. The conrod kit from RE India came with a new shaft, so I just pressed out the old one and replaced it with the new one and rebalanced it
@Cyclingwithgasoline
@Cyclingwithgasoline Год назад
That's all you had to do. I considered just refurbishing mine, but I'm replacing a lot of Indian parts with European ones (almost out of spite). So, I went with the upgrade that should last forever. I am going to refurbish mine at some point so I can sell it at cost. They're almost impossible to find and I'd like to have it available for someone.
