Here we are getting started on the restoration of another of our Historic Victorian homes! This time, it's the darling cottage in Natchez, Mississippi that we have lovingly named Pearl. She's the only one of our ladies that will be for sale when she's complete, so we'll be getting her done and on the market asap...but there are still just two of us doing all the work, so it still won't be soon.
This episode walks you through our beginning stages. Watch and learn as we show you why you NEVER need to replace your historic windows and walk you through their repair. Then, we'll teach you why plaster walls are so important to your health and the health of your historic home, and how to repair rather than replace them.
We also share our tips on our favorite and safest brand of paint stripper, that encapsulates lead paint and leaves your wood surfaces ready to receive stain or paint.
This is a great video for those of you who want to DIY it, but aren't quite ready to crawl under the house and start working on foundation repair just quite yet. The projects we show you here are 'must know' for every old home owner or future owner, and will equip you to feel confident in taking these projects on yourself.
And, it wouldn't be one of our videos if we didn't find a treasure and show you some dogs! Join us as we get started!

I had no idea what plaster (limestone) walls did for humidity levels and for cleaning the air. Now people may not be so quick to demo plaster walls that could and should be saved.

Yeah I knew some neighbors uptown that had a crack in their plaster wall so they ripped down the plaster, lathe and all and put up sheetrock-cringing screaming comes to mind-I would have searched high and low to find someone that knew how to put lathe and plaster back up before I had done that! Ugh!

There's a hidden story here....."pesky neighbors??" Anywho....LOVE your videos! I rented an old home 24 years ago and had those same pulley type windows and no clue how to fix the broken ones. If only we had youtube back then!

It’s wonderful to see the progress you’re making with Pearl. She’s such a sweet little house. The information and education in your work videos are exceptional. I love the way you both explain not just what you’re doing, but why you’re doing it. What a wonderful treasure to find one of the fireplace covers in the crawl space. Your videos are a delight and I look forward to “Coffee with Laine and Kevin” on Thursday mornings.🌸

Oh, the story of the little girl in the cemetery and how her mother would go down and sit with her in her grave during storms made me choke up. How sad for her family to lose her so young. Such a beautiful and peaceful cemetery, too.

The window weight knot had me going "whaaaat!!?" No idea there was a specific knot for this kinda thing, SO cool. I love learning from yall ❤

I may be wrong on this, but I think that knot is a clove hitch. I learned that one when my son was in Boy Scouts, I would go to the meetings and when they knots where being taught, I grabbed a piece of rope and tried to learn them, this one gave me fits!!!!!

Seeing your channel makes me wish every victorian home could be brought back to its original glory. It's deeply upsetting to me when people come in and disrespect these houses. And though those with disrespect are many. It gives me hope that there are a few who are giving these homes the respect they deserve. Thank you sincerely for what you do. You guys help me accomplish my dreams little by little. I'd like to restore a home one day, and you guys help teach me these skills.

Really just so interesting and good! So important the way y'all elaborate on processes in a surgical way meaning the plaster, discussing limestone, etc. People need to know how these things are done in a painstaking way with no quick fix. It's quite inspirational and informative! That steamboat light fixture is just smashing in there….Tribute to the Mississippi River nearby 💙

Oh my gosh, Laine, that cemetery is haunted, literally! We first went there in 2000 and we drove through the cemetery about 5pm. I made the mistake of looking into a mausoleum and smoky, steamy stuff started coming from an urn! I ran like hell! Lol.

In 2004 we moved into a 1924 four square in Peoria, IL. We systematically replaced all of our windows with modern windows. Our neighbor who had lived in his house for some 30-40 years even told us he knew how to fix our pulley windows… but we thought we knew better. Having watched you two and a few other restoration channels I realize what a huge mistake we made. We had to move in 2011 leaving that beautiful old house, but we sure loved it while we lived there. I enjoy how much you love these old houses and their preservation.

You guys inspire me so much to get back to work after the long (and stressful) winter! I'm restoring my 1939 house by myself while living in it, so it's going very very slowly. Doing the bathroom is going to be tough, since there's only one, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I have 31 original 6 over 1 windows to restore, and thankfully they're all in pretty good shape!

Gorgeous floofy puppies! When I come inside from a hard day of yard/garden work, I find sleeping cats who look SO exhausted. LOL. After a closer look at the "Steamboat Wheel" light fixture, I love it in that room! The color works with the fireplace tile, and it has a smooth, nautical look, not to be confused with those rustic wagon wheels with the amber lamp glass. My one twinge of serious envy is that Pearl still has her original wood sash windows. My first 1931 house had them, and I restored all of them the same way. My current 1931 house has leaky metal windows that were installed (shimmed in with cheap wood) in the 1970s. Custom house, 50% non-standard sized windows. $$$ :( The original front and rear windows may have been 'french door' style, like those on a house down the street. In S. CA, air flow was also important. I also love historic cemeteries and find them comforting. And Laine, you always look great!

Miss Pearl is a little charmer. So many lovely details to play with. How many windows?? Y'all do such a stress free looking, beautiful job on windows! Also love the tutorial on preserving and restoring plaster. The original wallpaper is stunning and will be rewarding to recreate for that room. I can see it done already. I've lived in houses just like Pearl and loved their many windows, quirky built-ins, old trees woodwork and things others have done while they lived there. All of your houses have such great personalities. Thanks for taking us on this process of restoration and preservation. Living your dream!
