Oh, I hear it CONSTANTLY.
"Burn it". "Waste of time". "No value." "Stupid."
Veneer is a very misunderstood thing, and the phrase "pressed wood" has most people sneering and squirming in their seats. But is it REALLY that bad???

Anyone else would have replaced all the handles because of one broken handle. Good job with that handle.
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Год назад
If they weren't recessed, I probably would have even gone that route myself, haha. But because they are sunk in, it was a bit complicated. But I wanted the challenge and tried my best, considering those tools were new to me. Looking forward to improving with them. :-)

It's a valiant attempt! As much as it is imperfect, what you learnt will stick with you, as it was a complex shape. I would have found some way to reuse the broken handle, like maybe use Bondo or Sugru to rebuild the missing bits and kind of celebrate the repair by making it stand out. Put that drawer right at the top!

I’m glad you keep repeating the lessons about solid wood vs. veneer vs. laminate. What those MCM designers and manufacturers achieved back in the 50’s should be celebrated. I love this piece and all the other MCM pieces you’ve restored. 👍💕

Thank you! It BOGGLES my mind when people say “it’s not worth anything” when the same piece (let’s say it’s a credenza or dresser) sells for over a grand (and often more) easily in mid century stores. I can’t speak for them, but I certainly can’t afford to throw a thousand dollars out the window. Hahaha
@vladeckk21

@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I love that you save them! But perhaps the "not worth anything" people are really saying "this sort of careful restoration is beyond my ability."

Tip, in the future use a drill with a bit the same size as the opening to remove most of the material then go back to the chisels and hand tools.

Beautiful restoration of a dresser that someone is going to get many more years out of! My very favorite videos of yours are the ones where you take a "lesser" quality piece and turn it into something stunning! Nothing is a "waste of time" in the hands of a talented person. I'm glad you pointed out that solid wood isn't always superior. And I don't think some people realize how much better the build and overall quality were in older furniture compared to today's--people back then just didn't have as much of a disposable mentality, which is why these vintage pieces have survived in the first place. Another great "save"!
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Год назад
It absolutely is the very reason these pieces have survived, albeit in rough shape for some of them. We've become a throw away society and the products we produce now reflect that. I'd much rather have an older piece!! Thank you so much for watching! 😊

I was looking to replace my dowdy ikea poang chairs. I got an alert on FB marketplace for three teak yacht chairs for 40.00. I hadn’t even started to look for chairs. I hosed them down, cleaned with Palmolive, rubbed down with beeswax and washed the seat covers. The cheapest price I saw on a comparable chair was $450.00. They’re super comfortable and look amazing.

So proud of you Angie, for expanding your skills. A piece like that handle is pretty advanced. All curves, no hard lines. Great job, and especially thanks for sharing your learning experience! I wondered about dremel-style sanding and routing bits to hollow out the concave handle. Not that I'm good with either, and you did an amazing job with the hand carving tools!

A complete success! Yes! It's well worth saving pieces like this from the trash. I would be proud to have your finished product in my home in Oregon, and I wouldn't hide it in a bedroom even though it is a chest-of-drawers for clothing. But, the shipping cost would be prohibitive for me, and I'd worry about the possibility of damage in transit. Thanks for being so caring and careful with your work.

I have learned a lot from you and successfully refinished our dining room table this summer. I have an antique dresser with white water spots which I am scared to touch. I would love a video on different damages to furniture and how to repair or hide the damage.
@boa1793
@boa1793 Год назад
Linda, From what I’ve seen of her videos, she would probably say that white stains are usually water damage and oxalic acid would get rid of them. Thomas Johnson restoration use it a fair amount, too. You use it after you scare. If you get the powder, mix it in water and spread it on the whole top, not just on the spots. Let it dry and rinse it off with a lot of water. It’s dangerous stuff, so wear a mask. If that hasn’t gotten the spots all off, do it again. Then do all the prepping for the final layers.

I agree that saving pieces from the dump is a worthy pursuit! I don't have the space to do refinishing/refurbishment (tiny one bedroom in a complex...) but i save things from the dump by "free-cycling". I have several pieces in my home that were curbside offerings... just needed a dab of glue, or a piece of trim replaced. One was an expensive chaise that was to be discarded from an airbnb due to a tiny tear in a seam. (EASILY repaired). Keep up the great work! And this piece turned out simply lovely! Great job on the handle!

Hi Angie. As far as people commenting on what types of pieces you work on, Ignore them. You are working on what you want to work on and you know what kind of money that you can get for the pieces. As far as this project goes, I can't see the difference between your handle and the others and again you have made someone's trash somebody else's treasure. I have to admit that when I first watched your channel and you mentioned painting wood, the hair on the back of my neck bristled. Dumb me. You use paint in such a "caring" way that I find everything that I have seen on your channel beautiful. In finishing, I would like to add a piece of advice that was given to me years ago. You do you.

Though there may be experts out there who could comment about how things were originally done, how it is considered proper, etc., you prove that the desire to find a creative, innovative solution with the skill set one has has produced valuable results. While it is really cool to have the skill to do things the way it's always been done, it is seriously inspiring to watch you come up with creative solutions and ideas using your creativity and growing skill set. I have been watching you from way back... Nice job! I've been woodworking for years and I would have to think about remaking that handle. One minor comment, please, shellac is not one of those plasticy finishes. It can be beautiful. It's natural and food safe. I use it a lot on my projects. Again, I love your work and look forward to each video.

Yes, I should have worded it better. I more so meant that it’s a building finish, rather than a low building, penetrating one. ❤️

Living in Sweden, a majority of our furniture is vintage teak pieces that we have collected, simply because we love the mid-century style. ^^ The cats will leave scratches on them now and then, but just buffing with some teak oil now again makes them nearly invisible.
