Restoring The Tail Lights (Porsche 911, 87)

This film is about the restoration of the tail lights of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
The entire tail light unit which back then was entirely made of aluminium and steel was disassembled down to the single screw. All parts have been restored or renewed, the housing was repaired with liquid metal, the covers were hard soldered.
The production of this film was supported by JP Group Classics from Denmark.
It was also supported by matoopa.com, my trusted shop for classic car - related tools.

Gruß, A.C

Great video. I just did this a few months ago. I took it one step further and sand blasted my housings, but to do so I needed to remove the bulbs. And that is where I ran into a problem. I tried to bend back the tabs, that hold in the bulb holders and they broke right off. I still need to figure out how to address this. I ended up using an epoxy just like you to fill some cracks I had and it worked perfect. I'm a long way from being able to try them out as my restoration is still on the rotisserie. Great video as usual! And I think this is a great topic as so many 911 owners need to address their light housings. I am going to share this on one Pelican Parts again for you!

A very Zenlike approach to fixing things. I'm pretty sure car buffs in 30 years will have a hard time restoring today's cars-plastic is not forever and at least with aluminum you can refresh it. Please-what rubber rejuvenating product are you using. I worked up a spreadsheet for rubber bits for a 1961 Alfa this weekend and had a heart attack. Thanks for the tip on EPDM-new to me and glad you pointed out this material. Thanks again

I have spent some time with the dremel cleaning the aluminium casing, and the day after cleaning, crystals form on the surface of the metal which can grow quite big if I leave them. I can only presume the cleaning process has activated old road salt on the metal which is reacting to the water? Anyway, I have tried cleaning it off, but the crystals return. We know this corrosion type is from dissimilar metals causing galvanic corrosion… the imbalance in electrons between the metals forms a battery causing the corrosion.

The first 105 series Alfas also had aluminum taillight casings, but later ones were made of plastic, like many other parts on these cars. There is a clear quality decline visible from the late 60s to the late 70s...

Well, as well described in the video, if you don't have a beautiful country to wander about like Italians , or good wines and food like French, you can as well design and manufacture great taillights and well insulated wiring! Still laughing thinking about it, and good jokes always are told in the most serious manner. Another great video Greesy fingers, thank you.

Another superb video. I find very valuable the sections where you demonstrate how to get out of the additional trouble that results from attempts at restoration, such as the broken heads from screws that wouldn’t move. And, those little red insulation thingies! Thanks for the insight on how the development of those went down. Have you seen the LED arrays for brake lights and tail lights, made by Jerome Joseph, a guy on the 911 and 914 bulletin boards who goes by the handle “Spoke.” I have his arrays on both my 914 and ‘87 Carrera. They’re a fine upgrade to the incandescent original bulbs. His website: Spokeworksled.com. Worth a look. Thank you.
