Porsche 911 (87): Restoring The Brakes (incl. Hand Brake)

This film is about the restoration of the brakes of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
The rear braking system consisting of brake and hand brake was disassembled down to the single screw. All parts have been restored or renewed and zinc-plated where required. The adjustment of the hand brake / parking brake is described in detail.
The production of this film was supported by JP Group Classics from Denmark who gave me some of the spare parts for free.
It was also supported by matoopa.com, my trusted shop for classic car - related tools.
If you're interested in the Gedore Red torque wrench (R68900100 / 3301216), please send a mail to info@matoopa.com and mention Greasy Fingers Channel.

Great video - thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m currently doing this job on my own ‘87 but also found that the rear wheel bearings and one driveshaft were shot so that job comes first. Great idea to assemble the handbrake assembly off the car - I hadn’t thought of that and it will make it much easier

I have the same brake caliper on my 1974 Alfa Romeo they are great brakes, the biggest problem is having the hard pipe in stead of a flexible house is every time you have to take them off you have to find something to block the pipe to stop the fluid from leaking and having to bleed the system after would.

Looking for your advice Johannes - I notice when you insert the new brake pads into caliper @ 12:25, you do not apply any brake anti-squeak grease or anti-seize lubricant to the back and perimeter of the pads. Is the grease/lubricant not needed in these cars? I am currently doing this project in my 83 SC, getting ready to insert new pads. Thanks!

Great stuff. Thank you very much. Curious on a couple of ATE related points: Was plating the norm for the OEM install for all ATE or just Porsche? At some point I'll be rebuilding my ATEs on my Alfas. I've rebuilt calipers in the past on Dunlops. I'm expecting similar technology. Second point, does your plater block off the piston bore before plating? Third-I ran into your channel years back researching plating and I thought you did wonderful work-a real standard for a home garage DIY to aim for. That being said, why did you send out the calipers for plating? Spring greetings from Austin Texas
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 3 года назад
I don’t know the answers, Steve. But I’m interested myself, maybe some other viewer to comment ... Regarding DIY plating: it’s a different challenge to do screws and stuff or a calliper. I’ve always been serious about brakes.

Enjoy spur low key videos - I recently refurbished all 4 brakes on my 74 911, wish I had seen your video to show me the way as I struggled a little. Popping the pistons out is definitely a dangerous operation. Reinserting the pistons is a little tricky, getting the correct angle and the right grease is important, wonder what your guy used?
