I followed this advice, filled out my resume accordingly, got a call less than 24 hours later, followed the interview tips on another video, blew away the interviewer the next day and got a job offer in less than five minutes of the interview. This advice works.

@@andylacivita I followed the advice of asking how the interviewer would like to describe myself after they asked, "So, tell me about yourself." And I followed up with the rest of his questions with answers that fit the job description. Then finally he asked me to explain a time I went out of my way to help somebody inside of work and then outside of work. After I answered those, he immediately said I can tell you have practiced and put time into this. He continued to say that some people in the company find that a little corny, but he did the same exact thing to get into his managerial role and he very much respected my extra effort. Lastly he of course said he would like to take this further. The rest of our interview was just us talking more like friends rather it being a professional interview.

@@andylacivita Andy, I previously used your initial interview advice to get a job and now I've went through one interview for a higher position. I did all the initial tips and was told "you're definitely getting called for a second interview." Along with the first interviewer commenting that she thinks I'm a great fit and if brought on "I (as in her) would no longer be the biggest nerd in the company." During this interview, I put in all the tips you suggest, and now I'm taking the next week before to study products (this is a commission sales position), customer promotions, and I am practicing my answers daily to various questions related to product knowledge of a sale to a willing and unwilling customer like they went over with me before. (I'm really practicing the hypothetical scenarios because that's the only thing that the initial interviewer had a difference in opinion.) When asked what I would do with the customer, I said I would find their most affordable option or sale price item and she replied saying this company only does sales on one product. I'm hoping to get a chance to use my knowledge that I've researched and previous experience to show the new interviewer that I have grown since then and have a desire to learn more each day as an employee. I know for a fact that the interviewer will be a different person. The previous interviewer fortunately did say that me and the next interviewer have a very similar mindset and points of view related to the jobs requirements and going well above them. Lastly, I have a few questions related to some of my actions and questions related to the interview. First, after I was told I would be contacted for a second interview, I gave it roughly five days of personal wait time and decided to personally call and ask if they are still conducting second interviews after reintroducing myself. After he said yes, I asked them what would be a time most convenient to them for us to schedule our second interview and we worked it out. I thanked him and concluded the call. Andy, is this something you consider professional or could I have possibly been seen as a nuisance? When I first interviewed, I also asked them how they prefer I dress. They told me to be very casual. However, do you feel like I should go with the tshirt and Jean's approach like the first person wished for or go for a more professional approach? I'm considering the latter of the two. Lastly, do you have any last suggestions on my practice leading up to or even what to expect in the interview? I plan to reference the past and also tie in a personal, friendly connection to the new interviewer. With the first interviewer, I ended up answering most of her questions without her asking because I gave very elaborate detailed answers. I believe with what advice I've gained from you that i am pretty prepared, but any extra advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can highlight leadership skills, customer service skills, and some technical skills even while working at McDonald’s, sports teams, and extracurricular activities...in the end though the best way to get a job is through relationships. Which you can build through personal relationships, LinkedIn and networking events

The application/resume/cover letter process is like a befuddled 5K. If you can get through completing these things, you can then begin the real race to the job. Hopefully we will move beyond this ridiculousness and just use Linked In. The amount of hours I have spent just customizing 2 cover letters and resumes, all the while thinking that I should pull the old teacher trick and just write, "You should hire me, I'm awesome, and so humble!", on my Career Summary just to see who is paying attention. The whole system is insanity - if not for this huge waste of time, we could have been working by now!

Just to let everyone know, THIS WORKS. I live in London, UK and it worked over here as well. I moved here 3 months ago and have been trying to find a job. With the CV I used to have, I only got 1 (!) job interview in 2.5 months of trying and then I didn't even get that job. I found this video last week, changed my CV from 2 to 1 pages, left out irrelevant stuff, made sure the first 3rd of my CV had the most important things in, added the Career profile and the keywords. I sent 10 applications last week and this week I had 7 interviews and I got 3 of these jobs!!!!!!! And all of these jobs are good ones as well, actually way out of my league as I am only a graduate with almost no experience, and these jobs are not entry-level. Within only one week this video has changed my life. I did not think it was gonna make such a massive difference, but it changed my "invitation to interview rate" from 2% of all applications to 70%, like I am sorry but this is incredible. Please for the love of God, if you are watching this video and reading this comment, just try it!

This is THE BEST resume advice series that I've ever seen. College advisors - not great. Friends and career network advice - okay but not perfect. Your presentations are on point, nothing but good advice (with examples) about what NOT to do and what you SHOULD be doing, and both of those are equally important. I am the type of person who NAILS IT in the interview. I have never been cut during first round of interviews; I either get the job or get the second interview (then maybe lose out to someone with a lot more relevant experience). But getting TO that interview is a challenge. This I think will really help me to revise my resume and start getting more hits. Thanks!

I like the idea of a short blurb referencing the employer and what the company does. But I always wonder--does the ATS know what to do with that info? Does it matter? I think about how it parses this info which really isn't pertaining directly to the candidate at all. I agree it's helpful for the human reader, but I'm not so sure the robot appreciates it. Curious about your thoughts and I'm never sure if it's more important to please the robot so that you can get to the human or please the human (and assume you can get through the bots).
@andylacivita

It will work to your advantage for both humans and the computer. Especially because you can add keywords in those blurbs.

If professional exams are required for my career, do you suggest putting them right below the career profile and above education for a collegiate resume? The exams are very important in these positions and are typically put at the very top of the resume, above education. But with your suggested format, I'm not sure where to put them now! This is for an actuarial resume, fyi. Thank you in advance!!

Andy, good advice for bourgeoisie professional types (yuppies as we used to call them) but how about something to help us blue collar people write a resume? I mean, career profile front and center? We have to have resumes as well as the educated professional and it seems to me your advice your advice is no help at all if I want, say, a shipping receiving job with wages that can support my family.
@andylacivita
@andylacivita 5 лет назад
+Steven Robinson “No help at all” seems pretty extreme, especially when I helped my welder friend use these same concepts to land his job. There’s nothing wrong with having a profile of your experience followed by your work history. You’re still a professional, regardless of your profession.

In my work experience I have names of different companies that I have audited or given tax consultation. How i generally represent them is in a tabular format where in I mention the type of audit (Statutory, Internal, Bank Audit etc), along side it the names of companies falling in the category and in the third column a very little description of kind of work involved. How can I remove table in this very instance? Thank you for guiding and educating people like me with the great insight and huge knowledge that you possess!

Hello Andrew, great video with some excellent insight! One question for you though: I am currently undergoing a career change from Environmental Management to Business marketing and trying to adjust my resume for this change. I’m replacing my old “objective statement” with the career highlight at the top as you suggested, but how can I showcase my skills and write those small two paragraphs about my “career” if I haven’t done marketing yet? Basically if I make those career paragraphs on the top based on my Environmental position, will it effect my chances with future marketing recruiters?
@andylacivita
@andylacivita 5 лет назад
Jeremy, great question. Before you do anything, check out the career changer playlist on my RU-vid. That’ll help you think through how to do that and also what you can highlight. Essentially, you need to speak to the capabilities you’ve developed to make you a great business marketer. Even if you don’t have the hardcore work experience you can highlight the foundational abilities you’ve developed.

Hi Andrew! I am finalizing my application today for my dream job. I have been constructing this resume for some time and have watched many of your videos, but there are still a couple things that are holding me back from submitting it. If at all possible, I could really use your advice on the matter. I am a recent graduate, and my current job has nothing to do with the field I am entering into. I see that most people put their title at the top portion of their resume and then go into their professional summary. My professional summary reads " Recent graduate from XYZ University with a B.S. in XYZ; however, since I have no relatable title, above my professional summary I have just bolded the words professional summary. Is this acceptable? I know it is probably the first thing an individual will see. Could you suggest a better approach? Additionally, my resume is a combination of the examples you showed in this video. I wrote my professional summary much like the females resume you showed but underneath my professional summary I listed my skills/ qualifications in a bulleted format. My qualifications are not in a table, they are simply a two column bulleted list. I did this because I am applying for a position in the science field and I have been told they prefer bulleted lists. The qualifications are very long and I don't think they would read well in a sentence format; for example, "understanding of marine mammal ecology, anatomy, and biology". Do you think that this is acceptable, or should I list it the same as the female example from this video?
