In this product review, we will have a closer look at a set of license-free walkie talkies from Retevis.
The maximum range can vary depending on your environment, best distances are generally reached under optimal conditions (e.g. open line of sight).
More realistic is to assume a shorter range, because houses, trees, and other obstacles can reduce the signal quality significantly.
If you are located in the US, you can benefit from a slightly higher output power of up to 2 watts.
However, in Europe PMR446 radios are not allowed to have a replaceable antenna, and can only transmit at a lower output power of 0.5 watts.
Because of this, it is perfectly normal that these radios perform best in close range communication.
At first, a short range may seem like a disadvantage, but if you think about it, it also has advantages.
In a city with many users, simultaneous transmissions on the same channel, are less likely if the radios only have a short range.
The benefit, users are not constantly bothering each other on one of the 8-16 available PMR frequencies.
In addition, the low output power extends battery life, and you can use the radios longer while consuming less power.
Also, if your radio would transmit over longer distances, more people could listen in, which is also avoided by the weak transmission power. Because a potential eavesdropper would always have to be close enough to receive the signal.
Also, I find it interesting to note that many of these types of radios can be programmed with an additional USB programming cable.
In my test, the communication quality was very good, personally, I think the Retevis RT617 and RT17 are very nice two way radios.

What's the best mid-grade radio from this brand?

Ok, I live in the US. My radios are the rt17 model. I have only used a cheep midland radio and the squelch control was horrible!! I read the manual and the only way to change the squelch control is via the programming. My radios cam pre-programmed with 16 channels not 22. I don't really know if I need to change the squelch setting or digital private channel settings. I know that I can transmit

Oh, as stated above since these came with 16 channels does that mean these are the wrong radios. I bought them on Amazon. And they said rt17 was the model number. Thanks.

One last thing, I bought the ones that you linked above but the description says 16 channel. Maybe I can just reprogram them for 22 Channel FRS. I am guessing until I install the software.

Hi, great videos. I was wondering if you ever got your RT617 to communicate with the computer. I bought two RT17 (US version), and was able to get a connection the first time I connected the radios to my computer, then I removed the CTCSS and DCS codes, but for some reason one of the radios got Chinese prompts after that. Now its been two weeks and I cannot get it to connect to the computer anymore, says "Cannot connect the radio" all the time. I have tried all I could think of (restarting computer, turning radio on and off, different computer with different Windows version) and all the compatibility options that Windows has, but no success, even tried chatting with the customer support on Retevis website which was a joke, all they told me was to make sure I have a tight connection between radio and the computer, then just left the chat. If you ever got yours to communicate, please let me know what Windows version you were using?

Most of these radios let you enable a basic scrambler function via a USB-Programming cable, however it is not a true encryption.

More expensive cables use the FTDI chip, please be careful when reprogramming the radio, please observe local laws and regulations, you don’t want to transmit on the wrong frequencies accidentally.

Yeap, many of these radios look somewhat similar, it is a proven and popular design. There are PMR radios (Europe) and FRS radios (North America), they look similar but have different frequencies and output power.

Don't think so, America has FRS 2 watts, but in Europe only 0,5 watts are allowed, why would the manufacturer risk a product ban and loss in sales?

@@ReviewTechTV Sir your review is indeed Great.. I really appreciate.. but can you please tell me whether I can use this RB617 PMR 446 / 0.50 watts Walkie Talkie in India as a Licence Free radio ?? Actually in India UHF PMR 446.000 - 446.200 MHz with 0.50 watts is LICENCE FREE and this product is also UHF PMR 446 Mhz / 0.50 Watts , but in the User Manual of this product it's mentioned that Channel No. 1 - 16 starts and ends from and to 446.006 - 446.193 MHz . So will it be truly working appropriately and legally on the Licence Free frequency of India which is UHF PMR 446.000 - 446.200 MHz ???? Please do kindly help me getting Clarified on this matter . You help will indeed be Appreciated . ThankU Sir.
