I live in Panama. (In the city) You can get much lower rents than $1200/mo. Depends on how long your 'must have' list is. My advice is to come down for a few weeks and rent a car. Do B&B. Travel around on your own. See how you get on. (Warning-dont speed! Obey traffic rules!) This country has a very typical Latin American vibe/culture. Medical care is resonably priced and available.(you can see a Doc for $25) Local food is cheap and abundant. Two bd apt for $800/mo. Its always warm. You can plug into the hippie surfer off-grid lifestyle right up to the high-end luxury lifestyle...whatever you want.

Rents have come down a LOT in Panama City. Many more people are moving to Panama City now... if they don't mind the hot weather.

I drove alone from Houston. I forgot my Spanish/English dictionary. My truck broke down in Managua. I had been here before in 1977. I was a soldier in the CZ. There weren't many cars in Boquete at that time. Taxi fares were 50 cents in 2002. You can save $1,000 per month by not having a car and by walking more and not paying for electricity for central air. Buy fresh mariscos from the men in pickups.

Boquete has a lot going for it, especially the even temps, never really hot or cold, good enough grocery shopping, lots of nice restaurants, great Tuesday market. On the other hand, you have to be prepared to put up with a lot of rain! Too many people moving there now and housing prices are rising due to low supply. No longer many bargains.

Yes it certainly has. Murder, cartels, Mafia, human trafficking, organ trafficking etc. El Pianista trail is well known to be used by drug traffickers, dodgy tour/ trail guides with a liking for European young women, one particular guide telling a woman who he kept touching even though she kept telling him to stop) that he could chop her legs off with his Machete. 😳🥺

I visited Boquete in September 2017 with high hopes but I found it to be a very small town, and could never see my self living there. It had grocery stores, restaurants etc but also dark at 6 pm, and just didn't do it for me, which is why you need to visit for yourself. I even rented a car for 3 days and drove myself around, also spent a day in David as well.

Hi Mark and Lorraine! Since my retirement 3 years ago I have been scouting places to live in Latin America ( I speak passable Spanish.) I've spent time in Mexico, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc. My trepidation about Boquete is that it might be a little too small a town for me ... I live in Philly so I'm something of a city boy. On the other hand Panama City is probably too hot and humid for me. Any suggestions?

Suggestions? The next biggest city in Panama is David about 30 minutes south of Boquete but it`s hot and humid there as well. Live in Boquete and hang out in David if a big city vibe is important to you. There are expats living there as well. Hope that helps.

Im going to give a quick run down about my recent visit to Panama and before the hate begins let me say Im Panamanian. I was in Panama city from Nov 1st till the 7th after about 18 + years I was so disappointed 😞. I had intended to look into condos in the city but of course what was I thinking 🤔 nothing is open from the 3rd through the 5th lol. I did manage to take a short flight to the island 🏝 of Bocas del torro but unfortunately the entire 🏝 was going through a water shortage a actual drought 😢 so after one night I flew ✈️ right back to the city. I'm not going to get into the negative but I'm going back in February for Carnival so a week prior I will be looking into Boquete . My wife actually gets to retire as we speak at the age of 48 so I think now is the time to begin the search. My only concern is the medical. My dream was always to go back home after retirement and after a life time of living in nyc its time for a change.

@@jonathandaniels9910 The limit is $50,000 per person per year. $50K goes a long way in Panama. I know someone who paid $9000 for a total hip replacement without insurance so $50K is adequate. Yes, it's 70/30 co-insurance except anything related to Chuck's high blood pressure is covered 50/50 (it was excluded for the first 2 years). The premium goes up every 10 years. So Chuck just turned 60 & our premium is now $224 a month for both of us. A bargain compared to what we paid in the USA.
