Beautiful 🥰 I wouldn't have survived the last 14 months without the wisdom, insight and instructions you have so generously given! My female is so much more work than I ever expected. There are days that I'm especially aware that she just chooses not to kill me. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me- the biggest dog challenge of my life. I don't deserve her. Gratitude Haz! I couldn't do this without you. And I'll never do this again 😆

Haz, this was so enjoyable to watch. What an amazing dog, and I remember how you explained in an earlier video how your work with the ball was much more of a relaxed exercise with Chico than with Gage. Excelling content here. Thanks for posting this.

I like Chico! For me to say that is pretty incredible because I don't care for German Shepherds in the context of 'my personal dogs'! But Chico is as fine a German Shepherd as I have seen in many, many years. His top line is fantastic! When you consider the DAMAGE done to this breed over the past 100 years or so in their physical structure due to the breeding for 'show standards', this breed's confirmation has really suffered! Which has also translated into health issues for the breed! All due to breeders trying to breed for the physical appearance that the show judges were awarding for causing the breed a lot of damage over the years! Fortunately, there are some dedicatedly determined breeders who have worked tirelessly to correct these errors in their attempt to restore this breed's ideal confirmation & health! CHICO IS THE BEST LOOKING GERMAN SHEPHERD THAT I'VE SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME!

I completely agree. Granted I have seen a lot of great quality working line German Shepherds Chico is not the only one, but he is the standard for what a working German Shepherd should look like and frankly a show line as well

If I can get my dog to even a fraction of the level you've got Chico at, I'll be ecstatic. I took my pup out to the park for training today and worked on heel. She's so sloppy (likes to sit either right in front of me facing right or by my side at a diagonal with her front right paw on my left foot) and tends to want to do it on her timeframe, so I'm working on straightening all of that out. She's only 4 1/2 months old, and I didn't get her until she was already three months old. I'm also super new to the whole functional obedience training thing, so it's been a process, but she's doing well. Thanks for the content. Because of your videos and book I really think she's stacking up to be a really happy, amazing dog.

My second is similar to Chiko in how she responds to training, just a lower caliber, nervy dog. Made similar adjustments in usage of rewards and how much energy I bring into training, so good to know my instincts were right there!

Really great video to watch even as a pet owner. I'm not working towards an IGP dog at least for a few years primarily due to my location, but love the tactics you use & seeing what I can do inside of my personal life to build up my current dogs. Love the FB group too. Thanks Haz.

Spectacular stamina, working qualities and temperament these dogs inherited through careful and strict breeding, amazing creatures, sculpted by human training, made to work for and with humans,,,YES, they were bred a and born to work closely under the command of humans, and they love it! it´s sad how dogs have lost their real function, even hardworking breeds like Malinois or Border Collies are now regarded "pets" and they waste their life living inside on a couch, bitting, barking and digging without control with lazy, ignorant owners that treat them like "dumb kids"

Haz you are absolutely Awesome, Thank you 👍🏾. Don't have a German shepherd dog at the present, but I still have the desire within me especially obedience training. Even though I don't have a GSD/ puppy I still totally enjoy watching, listening to Everything that you do, Much respect and recognition to You, THANK YOU 👍🏾👍. ONE DAY🙏. Years ago I did have a female German shepherd,I did mate her once, litter of 8 puppies, kept a male and under lessons from a friend in the K-9 gave me pointers on obedience training using one word command with hand signals, Caesar's training has made me interested in this awesome profession👍🏾👍👌

If overheating is an issue in this climate and at these temperatures, how did military German Shepherd and Malinois dogs cope on patrols in Afghanistan and Iraq?
@shieldk9
@shieldk9 3 месяца назад
No it’s an issue when the dog is acclimated to cold and it becomes hot suddenly.
@GallowsPole805
@GallowsPole805 3 месяца назад
We acclimate/d them in every single new climate. Nutrition, Hydration, Rest, Internal Temperature, are factored into the matrix with Heat Index. Generally speaking a heat index of 95 degrees Fahrenheit limits even the best conditioned/genetic/acclimated dog to 10 minutes of pure single purpose detection before a hydration/cooling break would be needed lest hyperthermia kill your dog. A dual purpose detection/patrol dog would be limited to less detection due to the need to fight at the “end of the rainbow…” Now… once you get into elevation like the Hindu Kush/Himalayas/High Desert you can drop that 95 degree heat index into the low 80’s. Some dogs (unfortunately you discover at elevation) genetics make them a liability. Bottom line is don’t get your guys or your dogs killed due to ego or a hero mentality.

@@GallowsPole805, Thank you very much for your very detailed answer which, by the way, reveals your immense knowledge and experience. I especially like your conclusion ("Bottom line is don’t get your guys or your dogs killed due to ego or a hero mentality"). It seems that, at least regarding this matter, we share the same values! Also, your comments made me realize my blind spot regarding Central Asian Shepherds and Kangals: I am so fond of these breeds that I completely blocked out that they can cope with extreme cold and heat because they have enough time to adapt to these weather conditions (they adapt to these temperatures and winds as the weather conditions in the countries in which they live slowly change, with the seasons).

Question about vocalization on the bite in IGP protection. If you had a Malinois that was fast in its entry, bit very hard and full, but vocalized during the bite from it’s genetic makeup without shifting the grip , would you do anything to mitigate it or leave it alone?

Chico is Soo handsome and has perfect structure. I remember arguing with people that Yaxi did not have the structure I like. Chico does not have a super long back which is very important. Also no crazy over angulation but having a back that is proportional like Chico is perfect

What is the point of the command simultaneously with the leash pop/electric? I literally can't see any point, except to be certain the dog cannot avoid it.
@vonvielfalt
@vonvielfalt 3 месяца назад
If I had to guess, this dog has a history of blowing off in motion excercises or stationary positions. Notice how he left the ball on the long down but he still looked interested in moving? I'd guess in a effort to try to improve speed he is applying pressure both by ecollar and likely only removing it when the dog completes the behavior, or trying to use opposition relex to promote it.
@shepherds.pie.youtube
@shepherds.pie.youtube 3 месяца назад
@@vonvielfalt to improve speed with negative reinforcement the dog has to have a chance to avoid the aversive. Otherwise there's literally no point. Unless all he's trying to do is frustrate the dog to make up for lack of drive. Which I guess could work but you're also running the risk of destroying motivation. I'd love to hear Haz himself answer this but I'm guessing he either thinks I'm some idiot who doesn't know what I'm talking about, or doesn't have the time.

Trained by shock? So does the ecollar train the dog? How? Describe the process.
@AnimaTriste
@AnimaTriste 3 месяца назад
Don't embarrass yourself with such uneducated comments. The core in this training is the dog's desire to work. Do you send your children in school? Do they like it, always? And if not (which is highly probable), are they slaves then? You don't seem well. At least you are emotionally disturbed. Seek therapy.
