This 1936 Harman/Ising Happy Harmony imagines spring as literally animated. That is, underground gnomes (animators) mix ink and paint and pump it into the landscape, bringing it to life. Winter attempts to reassert black and white, but is beaten back by the might of Technicolor

When I saw this show as a kid, I really enjoyed seeing how those little guys mined for colored rocks, turned them into powder and liquid, and sent them up the roots of grass and trees to make them change color. What an imagination people had in those good old times.

Okay, I swear, I had a VHS Tape once that was just a compilation of abunch of Cartoons, and I watched it all the time as a kid, aND THIS WAS ONE OF THE CARTOONS ON IT I HAVEN'T SEEN THIS IN LIKE 12 YEARS AAAAAAH!

tried to type all types of combination in google to find this cartoon again (cartoons, plumbing, flooding, mines, caverns, water, colors ,underground, spring, autumn, winter , summer, pumping colors, preventing flooding ,etc.) Watched this as a child back then. I still love this, and I'm from 1986. The truly greats are timeless and should never be lost. We are totally at this point with our spring weather where I live in Southern Michigan. My peach blooms got all burnt up. Sleet today!

While he co directed this short, this was the directorial debut for William Hanna (of Hanna Barbara fame) a few years later he and Barbara would co create Tom and Jerry before opening their own studio. Depending on the source 2 to 4 people co directed this short. Lee Blair, Hugh Harman and Paul Fennell. With Fennell and Hanna being confirmed by Wikipedia while the other 2 along with Hanna and Fennell by IMDB.

This was actually directed by William Hanna [Harman & Ising got sole screen credit]. It was the first cartoon he ever directed for the studio, while working for the "Happy Harmonies" unit. The following year, he became friends and co-workers with Joseph Barbera...and they created a certain cat and mouse for Rudy Ising in "Puss Gets the Boot" (1940)....which led to their own animated unit that lasted until was shut down in 1957.

Man I’m a 2000s kid, and I used to watch this cartoon regularly on my Bugs Bunny Toon Factory dvd and they would include strange cartoons that I wasn’t used to seeing, but years later I would always hum the song whenever spring comes around.

It is predicted to get down to 24 degrees tomorrow morning on the first day of Spring where I live, a testament to the power of Old Man Winter, as He battles it out for supremacy with Spring, just like in the cartoon.
