Retro Fun: Windows 98 on a Dell Dimension 2400
When I tried to give this box away for free nobody wanted to have it. It has a lack of AGP. Can we still make it into a great retro machine? I think yes with the help of some expensive parts! :D
We remove the Windows XP virus and install good old Windows 98 on the machine!

That's because the dimension 2400 is a dumb down version of the Dimension 4600, which had the AGP slot, and 2 more memory slots. Dell of this time period quite literally used the same parts across the different skews of their product lineup, with features taken away as you approach the lower end budget tier.

The Dell Dimension 4600 is the same Machine. The Motherboard will fit right in and It has a better Chipset and an AGP Slot. Easy Swap. Thanks for the Video.

Collect some PCI Graphics cards and do a benchmark video of this PC, perhaps try overclocking the pci bus and CPU to see if it makes any differences! This is such an under-explored topic in the retro computer world! - Try saturating the PCI bus with cards and then run benchmarks, please try something / ANYTHING with graphics on the pci bus!

I already have the solution for the AGP problem. I have the same problem here with a server multiprocessor motherboard with 2x Xeon 3.6 GHz and socket 604. I bought a PCI to PCI Express adapter and used a Radeon R7 250 with a low profile on top. Works flawlessly and has excellent performance for the system. It achieves almost 13,000 points in 3dmark 2001 with 32 bit and 1280 x 1024 px with this card. With a Pentium 4 1.8 GHz and 533 FSB with a GeForce 750Ti on the PCI bus, I got a gigantic 7980 points in 3dmark 2001 at 1280 x 1024 at 32 bit 😁

The lack of AGP was a huge let down but these where otherwise really stable well built machines. The bigger 4500s and 8200s are better machines though they came with ATI Rage 128s Riva TNT and sometimes even Geforce 256 cards and most got SB Live! 5.1 cards as well.

@0:53 mark I'm calling it... lack of AGP. That's why I scrapped a few of these I bought cheap and just used them for the cases. Apart from the now outdated look of the front the cases are quite nice, they are very solid and well made.

An FX 5500 PCI is a very good GPU for that build and can emulate Glide with nGlide 😉

I got this for Christmas 2003, 20 years ago, and man it was 1 step forward and 2 steps back, it was nice to have a 2ghz cpu but no agp was a huge letdown, I couldn’t play any of the modern games at the time. I installed the pci fx 5200 gpu, and it was so cut back compared to its agp variant. HL2 I could play on low with stutters, Doom 3 was a slideshow on lowest, Far Cry also a slideshow. I upgraded to the Dell Xps with a PCI Express 6800, and that was quite the improvement!

using ComputerCatGaming's guide I was able to get Windows 98 SE up and running on a Dell Dimension 2400 I picked up along with a nice Samsung 700DF CRT monitor for $20 at an office that was going out of business sale. I rather like running Windows 98 on this box using the onboard graphics. However I think I must have an early revision of the motherboard as I have the "Intel Extreme Graphics" and not the "Intel Extreme Graphics 2" even though the driver works after skipping 2 files. And I have "Other Device -- PCI Universal Serial Bus" question mark in the device manager even though USB is working fine. In my HUMBLE opinion it's nice little box for Windows 98. (notice the all caps on humble! I want to make sure you know I am humble hahaha!) I would like to try the Dell Dimension 4600 now!!

Yes with no upgrades it is just a solid basic box for some 3D gaming with older titles :)

0:28 This is a WAY BETTER system, beause that particular system looks like what EVERYONE'S MOM HAD back in the day. That exact Dell P4 design is what I played Tomb Raider on for the first time. Such a cool terrible system.

My mom bought a new 486 PC in 2001. I missed out on Tomb Raider and new games for next 10 years because of that error. To her defence that period of time was that fastest advancing for home computers.

I have a lot of memories with this computer. I remember getting my first computer in 2006; it was custom-built. After a year or two, it got burnt due to a shorted power supply. Then, I got the Dell Dimensions 2400 with an Intel Celeron Processor, 256MB RAM, and an 80GB Hard Drive. It was installed with Windows XP OS, but we didn't have an internet connection at that time. Only on Sundays, I could use a dial-up connection by connecting the Home V-Wireless telephone with the computer through a cable. It cost 20PKR Rs for 20 minutes of internet surfing time, which was not cheap back then, and the internet speed was only 10-25Kbps. I played a lot of games on this computer, and those were some of my best days, even though I didn't have the internet.

We still get these back once in a while at work, they got straight to the scrap heap. No one should try to keep them. P4 are better left forgotten.

I think that "PCI Universal Serial Bus" not installed in the device manager is the USB 2.0 that does not come with Win98SE natively and you have to install the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer...

I got a 2350 from my wife's step-mom some years back, put Slackware on it, and ran it as a home server for quite some time. The lack of an AGP slot didn't matter for that role, and as I recall it ran pretty reliably.

A time ago i found the same system in my city on the side of the road, with a terrible intel celeron inside. Lack of AGP intel Onboard Graphics, none standart connectors.. The case looks realy cool, i remeber the advert of this pc long time ago, everyone want to have it. Today only option to upgrade is a PCI video card, but for pentium 4 are most of them to slow. The Dell motherboard with AGP for this System costs about 40€ .. You can create the patition also with the windows98cd fdisk, fdisk shows wrong numbers but it is no problem to create and format a 80gigabyte partition.
@Disocclusion

Willing to bet it has no GPU slot, I owned one when I was younger. We put a PCI graphics card inside which helped a little bit.

Would AGP work if you soldered a connector there? What is the name of the AGP connector? Are they still sold?

I have a compaq board that has a k6 500mhz cpu and all the modern conveniences atx psu, sd ram, usb, ps2 ports etc. But it has that same fatal problem no agp slot rendering it almost useless for a retro build. That thing even booted to a sata ssd thru a ide to sata adapter. That dell would also be perfect for xp gaming otherwise.

If you don't need DOS then Windows ME is better for a newer system like this. Less trouble, more hardware support.

Well, i have a Asrock 775i65g (socket 775 and i865g chipset) with a Celeron 440 2.0ghz (single-core with no HT just like an old Pentium) wich is already a Core based CPU and runs extremely well Win98SE with a PCI V3 3000. This motherboard let you use SATA drives in compatibility mode for Win9x, so no IDE to SATA adapters... 775 still is Win9x valid 😁

I wouldn't hate Dell too much, at least it's easy to get ahold of drivers for their machines on their website, unlike other OEM's. where they just deleted them from existence and pretend that certain model computer doesn't exist and certain third party hardware manufacturers went missing along with their website's.
@SilverX95
@SilverX95 Год назад
Probably could add in AGP slot though it would require a lot of diagnosing and testing. I've seen it done to other stuff. This would be something fun for the modding community to figure out.

People are using Windows Me instead of 98 on these because of the broader compatibility. . Me is basically the last version of 98. Has custom drivers available to. 98 was good maybe like in 2016 but in 2024 Me is where it's at. lol.
